Hi All! I have finally decided to write up a little about myself for those that wander upon my page. My name is Carl and I live in Vauxhall, AB, Canada. I currently work as an Associate Pastor at Vauxhall Mennonite Brethren Church. I just started this job August 8th, 2011. I also am a journeyman electrician. While I don't mind electrical work and still do it quite a bit (it seems everyone needs help with electrical!
), my passion is for Jesus Christ and to help people find and grow in the freedom that comes from a relationship with Him. If you have any questions or would like to know my faith journey I'd love to share it with you!
I was born in 1981 in Calgary, AB. I became a disciple of Jesus in grade 10. I was baptised in 2000. I played Settlers for the first time right around this same time. Previously, my favorite games were Chess and Risk. However, both games were too long to play with most people. Settlers showed me a game that was more fun and more accessible. I played Settlers a bit here and there after that until I went to Bible College at Columbia Bible College. At CBC I learned Rook, Carcasonne, played 1 game of Memoir '44, and watched others play Pirate's Cove.
I got married in 2007 to my wife Kelsey. I am so blessed to have a wife that is passionate about Jesus as well as to see people's lives changed by Him. I am also blessed that she enjoys boardgames. I started getting more and more into boardgaming because of my Bible College experience. I am not sure when I discovered BGG but when I did it opened my eyes to this hobby. I remember the first games I was interested in were Torres and Pirate's Cove. My folks bought me Pirate's Cove for Christmas that year.
I returned to Bible College in 2009. This gave me more time to game of course
. In the years after CBC and before I went back to Bible College at Bethany Bible College I was playing games weekly with my wife and various friends of ours (but mostly with my brother and sister-in-law). We mostly played Settlers, Bohnanza and Alhambra with a little TTR in there once and awhile.
At Bethany I was introduced to a ton of games: Puerto Rico, Thurn and Taxis, Stone Age, Twilight Struggle, Priest of Ra, and Ceaser and Cleopatra. I made a friend that was also into boardgaming and we started playing once in awhile. I finally made a BGG account at the end of 2010.
Since then I have become quite familiar with the BGG community and have been a fairly active participant in various forums. Recently, I have also tried my hand at Reviews and I hope to write a few Session Reports someday.
Outside of the boardgame world I have other interests. First, my wife and I love hosting people! Whether it's to live or to visit we are used to having lots of people in our house. Games like Guesstures, Things in a box, and Taboo get their share of playing time because of this. We both enjoy meeting new people and making new friendships! If your ever in the area feel free to swing buy for tea!(We both don't really like coffee but love our tea...Vanilla Rooibos is my tea of the moment!).
Besides hosting I love sports, both playing and watching. By looking at my contributions you can probably see that I love analysis and stats. This is an area where my love for sports and boardgames cross! I now track certain board games the way I do my favorite teams and players!
Just for the record my fave teams/players are: Raptors, Bluejays, Flames, Roger Federer and Milos Raonic.
As far as playing I mainly play Basketball but I'm down with any sport!
Other interests include philosophy, theology, and counselling.
Well, This is easily not as structured as I try to be in the stuff I write but I hope this gives you a bit of an idea of who I am. Feel free to drop me a line anytime!
My Top 10 are my favorite games all things considered.
My Hot 10 are my top 10 favorite games to play with casual gamers.
