Like many board gamers I started with role-playing games in high school, particularly AD&D in the 1980s. My friends and I would also play the occasional board or strategy game, e.g. Axis & Allies
or Divine Right
. It wasn't until I was working on my Ph.D. in 2003 that friends introduced me to Catan
. I fell in love with the game and a year or so later I found Carcassonne
, which I also really enjoyed. Best of all my spouse liked to play as well. I was hooked and wanted to find additional, similar games but didn't know where to look. In December of 2007 I discovered BGG and have
wisely invested a lot of time here since, learned about a lot of new (to me) and exciting games, and bemoan my meager income for want of purchasing additional games. I also managed to get one of my old high school buddies to join BGG (user name = OriginalDM) and turned him on to a couple of new games. Together, ODM and I recruited another of our high school buddies to join user name drumbum), although he is mostly here for Pathfinder PbF.
Games listed in my Hot 10 are those I'm really interested in playing soon. It includes games I don't own and some that I've never played - those I really want to try.
