Currently my Hot 10 are my 11-20 ranked games. They were much tougher to pick than my top 10.
Princeton Theological Seminary graduate who plays Ultimate Frisbee almost as much as board games. Also love geometry, literature, Firefly, Liverpool FC, Indie music, LPs, philosophy, and more. Love teaching math and hope to go back to school for a PhD. in philosophy.
Though the games I tend to play are increasing in complexity I still prefer shorter games (60-90 minutes). I am too competitive to enjoy playing hours and hours for a defeat. Rather get my losses out of the way and move on to a second match. For this same reason I play instinctively and quickly (though not absentmindedly as I am analytical and always contemplating the game) and begin to fidget when people too frequently suffer AP. If I lose I want it to be because I did not play as well as my opponent. Nothing will make me dislike a game more than feeling like the victor is arbitrary.
I moved beyond Settlers in December of '07 and acquire and play new games veraciously. I always love to play one I haven't played before and hesitate to give any game a 10 because I always think the next new game I play could be better. I pick up new games quickly and can usually play strategically the first time around. However, I master games slowly, spending the first few plays examining the game closely to learn the intricacies of the rules, interaction of the components, and use of the mechanics. This means I will frequently lose at the outset (for example, I lost the first 4 times playing Roma, 2 times playing Attika, 2 times playing Through the Desert, etc.). This is happening less and less as I play more games that are similar to some I already know.
I tend to be the game explainer, which is not unusual as ALL of my gaming partners are converted non-gamers. I also love explaining new games (as long as my audience also wants to LEARN the game). I avoid, with a passion, teaching games to people who are not that interested in playing.
