I have been gaming ever since I can remember as my parents often played games with my sister and me. I am told that I used to be a bad loser which made gaming a nice experience for my parents as my sister was pretty good at cheating.
Good that I put this behind me as I usually tend not to win in games - but have great experiences nevertheless.
End of my highshool days and in my early years at the university I was into AD&D of which I still have very fond memories. There followed a costly 2-3 year immersion into Magic of which I was finally cured when a frat brother introduced me to Fief 2
. After that I was again hooked with board games and my collection has steadily risen from around 6 games in 1996 to roughly 370 as at July 2014.
Board games have become my number one past time and hobby and I could not imagine my life without them anymore. Playing games with 2-4 good friends is THE most fulfilling past time I know. Furthermore, I have made very good friends through this hobby and have gotten to know so many nice people.
What would be me favourite games? My Top 10 shows my all-time favourites in almost alphabetical order as I could not have ONE best game. I love so many different games: silly games, card games, dice games, family games, strategic and tactical games. I am more a Euro gamer than an Ameritrash one - although I do not object to game richer in theme than mechanics. However, my absolute worst gaming experience was what felt like a 10-hours game of Talisman (third edition)
. Man, did this game drag... and that was at a time where I was still going strong in fantasy and role-playing.
I am not really into abstract 2-player games although the GIPF
-series of Kris Burm and the recently discovered Go
are an exception to this rule. Furthemore, I am not a great fan of racing games - again with Ave Caesar
, Snow Tails
being good exceptions. Also, wargames are not really my cup of tea but Europe Engulfed
, Hammer of the Scots
and War of the Ring (first edition)
(wargame?) are of my liking.
