My Hot 10 are the games I am enjoying right now (for the last three months or so). I haven´t come around to making an all-time top ten.
All my logged games are face-to-face. I used to play some Dominion and Puerto Rico online but haven´t logged them.
I try to rate kids games and solo games for what they are, so a simple kids game might get a higher rating than a good but not fantastic gamer´s game. I don´t like word games and trivia games very much, so they will always get low ratings from me.
Things I strongly dislike in wargames:
1. ZOCs with mandatory attacks, forcing troops to leave good defensive positions for no good reason.
2. Command systems that are so anxious to show the chaos of battle that they won´t let you move a 200-metre line of infantry forward without breaking it up in small portions.
3. Odds-based bombardment, making it easier to inflict casualties on 100 men in a 100x100 metre area than on 10,000 men.
For ten years I didn´t rate games until I had played them at least twice, but that meant that the really bad games got away too easily because we would only play them once. Now I rate games after one play. I use the alternate rating guidelines:
10: Outstanding game. One of my all-time personal favourites.
9: Excellent game. Always a pleasure to play. Shines under most circumstances.
8: Very good game. Rarely disappoints me. High on my request/recommend list.
7: Good game. Usually willing to play. I might even request or recommend it.
6: OK game. Some fun or challenge at least. Enjoyable in the right circumstances.
5: Average game. I'm indifferent, but may be willing to play.
4: Below average game. I avoid playing and would need to be persuaded.
3: Poor game. Will strongly resist playing.
2: Very poor game. I refuse to play this.
1: Dead game. Seriously negative entertainment value. Black Hole of Fun.
