Born in 1975, I was introduced to all the traditional board games growing up (Risk, Monopoly, etc). However, I soon found myself fascinated by games with rule books longer then most novels.
Could a game have that much complexity? I didn't appreciate at the time that complexity did not always equal a good game, but it got me exploring games.
Ambush! by Avalon Hill was one of the first "advanced" games I bought.
I struggled to find people to play these games with, so over the years I fell in and out of the hobby - generally staying aware of popular games, if not being able to play them for myself.
In 2010, I again became interested in persuing the hobby, not knowing if I would find fellow gamers. Thankfully I had great gamer kids who joined me in many game sessions, and in 2011 I decided to try to expand my gamer friends to the BGG community, when my daughter and I did a Play By Forum play through of Mansions of Madness.
Rather then simply exchange turns over posts, we recorded each round with a video, acting on the submissions from BGG players.
We had a great time, the players enjoyed it as well, and several viewers tuned in and voiced their support of what we were doing. After that we launched an official YouTube channel dedicated to this kind of interactive gameplay and we've been having a blast meeting lots of great fellow gamers and finding a great outlet for my enjoyment of games.
I am quite optimistic that I will never fall out of the hobby again!
