I loved playing games as a child growing up and would often learn games and play with my older brother and my parents. We would often find ourselves leaning away from the monopoly-board type games and more towards the few different type games we had (Acquire and Civilization). As a family we played so many different games, and I learned alot from those times.
Not much progressed with games for me til a friend made a passing comment around 2001 or so about a game called Settlers of Catan. I found it and found a whole new world of games. I picked up a bunch of games on random insight and reading box bottoms and got a bunch of winners, but also some duds. For along time, it seemed like everywhere i went i brought along a copy of Settlers, Carcassonne and Puerto Rico (the Big Three as we often refer to them). Now they are still good, but nowhere near our favorites to play.
Then in early 2008, I found BGG and have lurked around since. I found that my tastes are pretty similar to the common rating on here and have bought and enjoyed a number of games that I probably wouldn't have because of this. Twilight Struggle being a prime example.
Unfortunately now I am at the point of too many games and not enough time/gamers to play them with. My wife enjoys gaming, but with three children, gaming time for us is short/non-existant.
My Top 10 are the games I want to play.
My Hot 10 are the games I want to acquire.
