on 12/28/14Other stuff about me:
I'm married to a wonderful woman who puts up with my obsessions and geeky stuff and actually encourages it sometimes. We have been married for eleven years and have been together for thirteen. We have two beautiful children, a nine year old boy and a seven year old girl.
I live in Nor-Cal and work as a paramedic supervisor at a rural ambulance company that operates in the foothills. I've been a medic for twelve years and an EMT before that for four. Currently I'm in training to become a critical care pararmedic, which is very exciting. I love my job.
My wife teaches first grade in the local school district. I help out when I can at her school.
My other interests and hobbies include: GMing and playing RPGs, playing with my kids, reading (specifically Sci Fi and Fantasy), taking my dogs for a walk, listening to music, and playing video games.
I'm a proud participant in the Sacramento Boardgamers Meetup group. Great group of people to game with on a regular basis. How I got into board gaming:
Growing up my parents had a tradition of getting us each a board game each year for Christmas. I remember getting games like Risk
, Battle Masters
, Key to the Kingdom
, and Dragon Strike
(I also received the more typical fare, but they weren't as memorable). My only problem was I never could find anyone to play with (other than my siblings, who were tolerant at best). As I grew up my love of fantasy literature lead me to games like Dungeons and Dragons and video games such as Final Fantasy. I always had a soft spot for board games though.
Fast forward to Christmas 2009. I was listening to the D&D
podcast and Mike Mearls
was talking about gifts for the geek in your life. He mentioned some board games, he being an avid board gamer. One of the games he mentioned was Small World
. Being intrigued by his description I cajoled my wife into letting me purchase it. When I got it I read the rulebook cover to cover and played a few practice games. Feeling I had a good grasp of the game I got together with a few friends and we played. Well they had fun, but I had a blast. I wanted more.
So for the first time in who knows how long, I had something other than video games on my wishlist for my birthday. I still had the problem that I had when I was just a wee lad, no one to play with. My friends and I did't have the time we used to, so I had to look elsewhere. It is then that I found the Sacramento Board Game Meetup
Now my wife is happy because I'm not trying to talk her into playing with me (Though she does every once in a while) and I have an outlet to game on a regular basis. April 2016 will be the six year anniversary of when I seriously started collecting and playing board games and I couldn't be happier. My most recent plays:My Hot Ten is the current games in my Meetup box (Changed as games get played and replaced):My Top Ten is the games I own, but have not played yet. They are ranked in the order I want to learn and play them in.
