My Brand new, freshly minted avatar is the picture of one side of a dutch coin, a duit, minted in 1735 by the VOC, the Dutch East India Company.
I love economics and I love economic games. It fascinates me to no end the choices, tradeoffs and incentives which people face when it comes to making economic decisions and the institutions, large and small, people create to organize and control economic activity.
This picture of the duit represents lots of wonderful inventions man has made to facilitate what is for the most part welfare improving trade. The picture represents money as a commodity, a remarkable improvement on barter, and then as a claim or a contract on a commodity, fiat money, which is an even more efficient concept.
The choice of VOC minted coin specifically reflects the forces of Globalization and Financial markets. The VOC was one of the first companies to raise cash using a public stock or equity as a financial contract and the VOC itself was one of the first multinational public companies in international trade.
Another very important symbolic significance of picking the Dutch east India company, VOC, is Imperialism. It reflects the unseemly side of human nature, the killing of thousands, enslaving of peoples, waging of wars just to create and protect monopolies, for greed, for control and for power.
Finally, the picture of the duit itself is a beautiful one, much prettier than a photo of a stock or bond certificate.
