Ooh Secret Santa and War-game Secret Santa!
Thank you so much for your wonderful gifts this year. I was so fortunate to receive the following on Christmas!
and TWO copies of
!! How incredible is that!
I can't wait to try them all!
I started in this hobby back in August 2011 when I purchased my first game Pandemic
. I knew nothing about hobby games, having only played chess and a few war games from Avalon Hill
back in the days of yore before PCs were around. So I looked up the most sought after games on Amazon and found that Pandemic
was near the top of their chart. That game launched an incredible journey into the world of board and card games for me. I researched and listened to hundreds of hours of podcasts beginning in 2005 with "Boardgames to Go"
with Mark Johnson and the "Dice Tower"
with Tom Vasel to get an understanding of what the best games were.
I eventually compiled what I call is the DEFINITIVE ALL-TIME RANKING
of 800+ highly rated games based from seven Top 100 Game Listings and nearly a dozen prestigious award presenters such as Deutscher Spiele Preis, Int'l Gamers, and Charles S. Roberts! This has launched my obsession in finding and playing the best games ever produced!
I love collecting boardgames from eBay and BGG auctions, especially if they are rare or out of print. One of my favorite finds was an unpunched edition of the The Fellowship of the Ring
. I also own a new edition of Rail Baron
but that's only because I purchased it 30 years ago when I dabbled in a few Avalon Hill
wargames like Afrika Korps
. I never found the time to play it.
As I play through my collection, I need to stop procuring more games. I figured it is already going to take me at least 15 years to play through all my games if I hit the table with a new one each week! I wonder how common of a problem this is with other collectors?
My most frequent game plays (since I began this hobby) are found under my HOT LIST (Washington's War
being one of them) and my most highly rated games are in the TOP 10 (“Twilight Struggle”
is still #1).
Regardless of a game's complexity, I just can't get enough of this marvelous hobby. With ample social opportunities and myriad approaches in brain calisthenics you can never overestimate its irresistibility towards absolute fun! It also has to be the most unsurpassed preventative health measure for Alzheimer, bar none!
