Having always played boardgames as a child with friends, I started to discover the beauty of strategy and wargames, the heavier ones, when I was 12. It started with Zargo's Lords
, and being a fan of the old Hornblower and Alexander Kent novels, Wooden Ships & Iron Men
. Things moved forward rapidly from then, though only two friends were able to mount the interest and stamina to keep up with beauties like ASL
and its numerous expansions...
These were the days, especially since being at school and later Uni gave us the time to actually play. All these nights of Panzergruppe Guderian
and Das Schwarze Auge
... oh, fond memories.
Real life, moving countries and starting to work put a bit of a halt to this all, and for about 10 years playing was happening very little to say the least, and all those boxes waited in lofts and my parents house. And they waited and waited, and eventually, they heard the call again a few years back !
Playing for me is essentially split in two halves:
The dark side is my eternal love for strategy games, light and heavy, mostly wargames (recently played ones are in my 'Hot-10'). These are all played solo though with very few and rare exceptions.
So, if you are looking for face-to-face or internet-based (VASSAL or cyberboard) war- and/or strategy gaming, I would love to hear from you, and having played quite a lot of games and systems (my games list is way from complete), I would be delighted to give pretty much any other game a go as well.
Having moved house, town, and in fact continents several times over the last 5-10 years meant, I/we never really had a chance to get a local gaming-group up and going with few sporadic exceptions..
For the other side of my gaming, my wonderful wife is my main and virtually exclusive gaming partner. She is great, ambitious, full of fire and enthusiasm for it, and we found many games we love to play again and again and again (see the 'Top-10'). Wargames are unfortunately a bit too heavy for her and don't interest her that much, and though we have tried Conflict of Heroes or Tide of Iron, the genre just doesn't tickle her fancy as much as fantasy settings like the Lord of the Rings.
One last move to Poole, UK, in Feb 2010 and after settling down there for good, we both now hope and look forward to meeting people , finding a gaming group and getting going with group games
So, if you are in Dorset, Bournemouth, Poole or anywhere near that beautiful part of the country and are interested, drop us a line, and we are delighted to start playing...
