MOST RECENTLY RATED/UPDATED GAMES: APR 2016 - Allegiance:ARD, IKI, Morelli, Ashes:RotP, Patchwork, Tako Judo

GAMING HISTORY: Playing and houseruling all kinds of games since the 70's. Started playing when just a toddler (designed my first game at age 6) and played quite a few even at a young age which can be seen in some of my lower ratings (even as a child I loved to tinker with rules, in my teens I realized most games had flaws and started "fixing" them rather than accepting them). Then like a lot of you I grew into Chess, Risk, Stratego, various card games and others that I enjoyed and played off and on for many years. Board games were always a part of "gaming" for me but it wasn't until I met my (now ex) wife in 2002 and went online to find some "different games" that I found BGG and board games then became a true obsession passion.

Gaming has now almost come a 360 for me; before BGG I was playing longer games, wargames, AT games etc and then discovered Euros and got hooked on them since in many ways they improved on all the things that bothered me about older style games. Played about 500 different Euros for about 6 years straight and then understandable burnt out on them, and now have largely reverted back to the 'start' so to speak. Thankfully games have improved over time, and we now have some good lower luck wargames and AT games are not just a total luckfest etc. Currently my favourite games are those that are a bit of a hybrid so to speak, so have a strong implemented theme and include meaningful decisions, like wargames and games like Agricola and Robinson Crusoe

PREFERENCES: I’ll play just about any game if it is fun, competitive or challenging like: Cards, Lawn Darts, Ping Pong, Video Games, Croquet, all Sports etc and of course Board Games.

In Board Games I'll also play pretty much any type of game; I enjoy strategic or operational wargames esp if a CDW and/or involve hidden units/movement like in Pacific or Vietnam (only one small reason I like those Theatres and really very few do true hidden), deep taxing Euros where strategizing and skillful tactical play are awarded, strong themed games if they also include meaningful decisions and minimize luck and I also have loads of fun playing good party games with the right groups. A little luck is usually fine (and ONLY a little if a Euro) but I'm not usually a fan of randomness or chaos in non-party games and prefer to play those where skill determines the winner and whether you lose or win you can point to why. I noticed when I was married that I was willing to play a 4 hour+ game with some luck with the wife (WOTR, DOA etc) but I really abhor long and luck (or especially random/chaos) together in a 3+ multi-player game. I have had an ongoing love/hate relationship with wargames for the last 30 years, and even avoided playing them for many many years just due to the dice. I love everything about them, especially the history lesson, engrossing decisions and real strategic nature, but find that dice can really ruin an otherwise amazing game when it doesn't even out, and I STILL have not fully made peace with that to this day (but I'm getting there and they are my current obsession).

I find my boredom threshold is around 3 to 5 games (25 a hard ceiling for games with lots to explore or just vastly replayable) with even some notable titles not getting past this (3-5), this is largely due to my love of learning and exploring the nuances of new games (I never read strategy articles that would spoil half the fun for me). I am partial to anything with RPG elements, Card/card driven games, War Games and Euro games that have a strong theme (surprisingly there aren't many). I have also discovered that I really enjoy tense crisis management games when done well, my top 4 here are Agricola, ITYOTD, Robinson Crusoe & Antiquity (some wargames could likely fall here too). Actual D&D is also a lot of fun for me with the right group, I don't really get to play much (if at all) anymore but way back in the day I favoured Rangers & Druids (hence my old Avatar). Duel of Ages scratches many gaming itches for me and is a great couple game, it has a few elements of D&D and plays mostly like a wargame so it's really an ultimate combo for me.

HOT 10:. My Top 11 - 20 games

MY RATINGS/COMMENTS: As somewhat stated above I am looking for several key things in a game, my top 5: Strategic depth, challenging tactics, tough decisions, replay value & of course FUN. I love a good theme and that can really help push a game over the top but ultimately in the right game it can also be overlooked if everything else is in place. To make it to a 9 rating or over a game MUST be high in at least 4 of the 5 key aspects. To achieve '10' status for me it must still be highly desirable after 20 plays and gameplay must not need improving in any way. My comments and ratings are updated regularly and I'm committed to commenting on every game I rate, the good and the bad.

DESIGNER LIKES & NOTES: Kramer (old stuff) the 'master strategist', provider of never enough actions, king of chaos and screwage extrodinaire. Knizia (Old stuff) the 'master of tension and balance'. I like most of the old stuff from both, and several are in my top 10. Also of mention, Wallace the 'master of conflict and interaction', Feld the 'master of punishment'? hehe he's good & someone to watch for sure (edit-several years later that sure turned out true), Dorra the 'master of elegance', Chvátil the 'master of innovation' and Trzewiczek 'master of theme and moving parts?' also top the list for me.

FAVOURITE NON-BOARDGAME GAMES: I love Croquet, a little strategy, great tactics, excellent interaction and oh yeah SCREWAGE! Great fun with 4 - 6. D & D is great for the imagination and co-op affair, playing out a story and acting out and advancing characters is a great escape. Golf is a sport...kind of but more like a game of sorts, it is really one of the ultimate challenge's.

DESIGN PROJECTS: I started designing games in 2008 and have a bunch on the go including 2 with design partners, but damn it is tough to set time aside for this and it is a lot of work. I do hope to spend more time on this in the future some of the projects are solid and have great potential
