My top 10 are the games I would take to a deserted island (including expansions). My Hot 10 are the games I want to play at this second (updated 6/23/15).
I've been in the board gaming hobby for close to 5 years now, and in that time I've come to learn what I like and don't like:LikesAsymmetry:
I love it when each player has unique abilities. Bonus points to games where you actually play the game differently
.Engines and Combos:
Who doesn't like becoming more powerful and pulling off insane feats?Spatial Reasoning:
I want it to matter where I put things. I want to be able to position pieces to my advantage.Card Games:
I think because I played so much Euchre growing up. To go along with this-Hand Management:
I like the tough decisions that come along with choosing how best to use what you've drawn.Variety:
Both within a game and within my collection. I like to play games that are different every time you play them, and I like to buy games that fill a niche in my collection.Player Interaction:
I'm playing a game with you; I want you to care about what I am doing, and vice versa. I enjoy some low-interaction games, but they need to have a lot of the other stuff I like.Thrifting!:
Nothing like getting an awesome game for $3.DislikesDowntime:
Especially if there's nothing for me to do while I wait. If I can be thinking or contemplating my next turn, then it's ok... although if everybody has this extra thinking time, downtime shouldn't be an issue.Cube-Pushing for the sake of Cube-Pushing:
I can play Euros, but I only really enjoy them if they have some unique hook to them that elevates them above cube-pushing. For example, Glen More has boring cube pushing, BUT it has a neat tile track AND a strong spatial element.High Randomness to Decisions Ratio:
I like some luck, but I also like to make choices. If the randomness level gets too high, it's not fun anymore.
