I'm a published poet, short fiction, and creative nonfiction writer. If you google my name, "Bryce Journey," you can read some of my silly stuff. I teach writing at Iowa Western Community College.
I got into gaming when I was 12 and my middle school was condemned when the floor collapsed. My grade attended classes at the local high school, where one of those students introduce me to BattleTech. I spent most of my teenage years and my 20's playing and spending way too much money on CCGs and CMGs. I was quite the competitive tournament player for awhile, but after my son was born, the competitive scene just wasn't fun anymore. For the last several years, I've devoted all my gaming passion and energy towards casual board-gaming. I like both Euros and thematic-Americans and my collection has grown exponentially thanks to thrift stores, the GenCon live auction, trades, and the Hot Deals forum. I don't usually buy games new unless the game is an amazing deal. I've recently gotten into painting some of the miniatures of my games after picking up a few brushes and a starter acrylic paint set. I haven't done miniature painting since my early BattleTech days. I wasn't very good then and I think I'm only slightly better now. It is fun, though, and something I'd like to improve upon. My Top 10 are my all-time favorite games and my Hot 10 are the games I'm currently most thinking about trying out or acquiring.
When I'm not keeping my six-year-old son, Luke Ender, and one-year-old son, Joe Bertram, amused, I enjoy increasing my skills as an amateur yo-yo enthusiast and watching bad movies with my wife, Laura.
I recently designed my first board game: Aguirre
. The game is currently entered in a major board game design competition. I've made it available as a free PNP, all of the files of which are available at the game's BGG page.
Before she passed away, my cat, Arwen, composed a series of entertaining board game reviews. Here's a link to the compilation Geeklist: Arwen the Cat's Board Game Reviews Subscription GeekList
