It combines some nice mechanics (card drafting, action selection, standard race game) with a clever twist (two different "race" goals) and is well executed. The clever part I especially like: each player is completing both to get back to London first (fewest number of game turns) as well as first (fewest number of "days" spent by playing cards). The game mechanics work out nicely such that these goals are somewhat in conflict; by delaying an extra game turn or two, you can likely finish the race in a fewer number of days. The way the win conditions are set up (must finish in under 80 days and must not finish last in game turns), it works rather well. This isn't a "big hit" kind of game, but it's fun. Especially if you enjoy unusual race games. It has a slightly similar feel to Marco Polo Expedition. After the first play, I was luke warm. One third of the way into the second play, I was hopeful, it looked like there might be some interesting and deeper hand management decisions than it originally seemed. Then, luck happened. I like luck in games. A lot. But, Beowulf has luck in the same (and only) place it has strategy and tactics: hand management. In addition to the luck of the draw, which is reasonably small and the usual factor in hand management games, it has the so called "risks", particularly during "major episodes" which are basically a magnified "luck of the draw". A good draw in a mid-episode risk is very beneficial. A bad draw in a mid-episode risk is very bad. If the luck were instead somewhere else, say in the selection of the order of the episodes, or in some other aspect of the game, it might not ruin it, but I think the potential variability of the swings of luck that so fundamentally and directly affect the core of the game eliminates too much of the impact of earlier decisions. At least I know I don't need another big box filling up shelf space. I actually think it's fairly good, but I have a nagging feeling there is less subtlety to the game than it seems. The art is cute and the odd "Engrish" isn't too distracting, though it seems common that players have a hard time with the fact that "Close All {1 fairies}" actually means "All players turn 1 fairy card face down". In any case, this also wins some points for cleverness by using a Magic: The Gathering style draft for card selection as well as a somewhat novel card flipping mechanism. In the less than a year since it's been out, it's become my 3rd most played game ever and I have no doubt it will be the most played before long. Despite being a long, and to many people, complicated game, I played a lot of this, and was fortunate enough to get all the expansions before they, and the main game, went out of print in the US. I highly recommend this game, especially to those with a technical bent. I haven't played it much recently (4 times in the past 2 years), but I expect to occasionally play it for many years to come. The tiles are a bit annoying compared to cards and the whole aspect of everyone having the option to buy cards before each turn really messes up the pacing. It's a long, historical area influence game, all strikes against a game in my book. So, I didn't play it. Nearly a year later, everyone continues to rave about it, and it seems to have nearly universal appeal, so I decided to give it a try. I read more about it and become more inclined to think I'd like it. It's a card-driven system, similar to We The People which is a rare long, historical game I LIKE. I was really looking forward to trying it. Finally, I tried it. It was interesting, and I didn't dislike the experience, but mostly all of my initial concerns turned out to be true. It just doesn't do it for me. Under the right circumstances I could be convinced to play it again, and I understand why some people like it, but I can't say I understand the overwhelming positivity toward this game.
