Another week has passed and I have stuck to my dietary and exercise goals. I played a lot of tennis last week, began a new strength training plan (convict conditioning) and even got out for a nice 5 mile hike on Sunday. Dietary wise, I was able to survive a trip to Cheesecake Factory without a blowout(lettuce wrapped chicken tacos are really tasty), and found a Kabob place near my girlfriends place that was really good, and should serve me well in the future for keeping the calories down.
Gaming was hit or miss over the last week. Me and my brother were able to get some good gaming in, playing Eminent Domain, Troyes, and Blood Bowl Team Manager. I heard about the BBTM expansion coming out, and I am really interested (which is unusual for me, expansions are usually a no go).
So, as the rules state, that means I have earned another dice roll. As before 1-9 get me nothing, 10-19 get me a CD, and a 20 gets me a game. Here goes: 1d20 = (4) = 4
This coming weekend my other brother is coming home, and we are all going to a concert on Saturday. I will try to push for some Tichu during the tailgating for it, but we will see.

So this week I have determined that I had not met my goals to get a roll. The reason for this was my weekend eating. I maintained my exercise through the weekend, doing those hill sprints friday night, doing bodyweight strength training saturday and monday and walking around an amusement park all day sunday (and I do mean all day). The eating was bad however. Both Saturday and Sunday I topped 2700 calories, with a wedding and then the amusement park. If I had fallen saturday and then come back sunday, it would have been fine, but Sunday was a day of soda. In particular, I drank 3 20 oz. sodas with dinner. I was pretty dehydrated from the amusement park at that point, and I just kept going back for refills. If I had gone with water I would have been close enough to the dietary goals to have rolled this week, so lesson learned.
I also have played awfully on the tennis court the last two days, so that has me in a rotten mood. Bleh!
On a more cheerful note, Troyes has gotten to the table 4 times so far, and it has been fantastic. I have also started reading the second foundation book, which was my reward from week 4.
Also, it is important to note that the failures this weekend do not derail the monthly award train. That is more about maintaining good habits through the month, so it takes more than a bad weekend to make that one lose. I will have to be strong for the rest of the month to hold it up.
Finally, a friend who has been having troubles recently messaged me about playing magic. I am glad to see him doing something that wasn't destructive to him, so I told him I would be glad to, despite not being the biggest Magic fan myself. Here's hoping that we can have a good time doing it!
So I went to Dream Wizards with my list of 6 possibilities to choose from. They have a pretty good selection usually, so I figured I would have at least three of the six to choose from.
Boy was I wrong. They only had 1 on the 6. I actually asked about Netrunner, to see if it was coming later in the week, and they said they had sold the three copies they got within an hour. So that option was out. I didn't ask but I looked around a lot, and had no luck getting Lords of Waterdeep(which they used to have, I'm guessing it sold out), Macao, Core Worlds, or Castles of Burgundy. They did have two copies of the highly recommended Troyes. So I grabbed it into my greedy little hands and took it to the cash register.
Once I got it home, I started to dive into the rules. I could tell by my significant other's face that she was concerned regarding how much trouble I has having digesting the rules. I also realized at that point that I had technically cheated. I had not worked out that day. I told my girlfriend I had to go take care of that before I did anything. 20 minutes of hill sprints and 10 minutes of cool down, plus a shower later, and I was back to figuring out how the game worked.
I talked her into sitting down with me to do a demo round, to get an idea of how it worked. We were both pretty overwhelmed by the options and what each option did, but by the third turn or so we at least had a grasp of the game. Our scores were awful, as we were basically ignoring our personalities that get us points, as well as pretty much doing things at random without knowing how they could help us. I also took a while to realize influence was not points.
All in all, I am excited to play again. When I suggested another round last night, she said she did not think she could handle another one right then. When I asked her in the morning, she suggested scrabble instead, which was a bad sign. Unfortunately I made it worse as I am pretty darn good at scrabble, and she could not catch a break.
There was some other good that came out of it all. Being at the game store with me, my girlfriend made me promise not to buy Netrunner, so she must have chosen it as a birthday present. Crossing my fingers!!
Well, I will continue to update for this next month, and should, assuming all goes well, have another dice roll on Tuesday.
Wow that last thread got a huge response. I have attempted to tabulate here people's responses (probably incorrectly). I realize now that maybe a poll would have been a better way to do this, but I will be counting each recommendation as +1 for that game, and every warning against a game as a -1
Age of Steam or one of the other permutations of it
Le Havre +2
Lords of Waterdeep +4
Mice and Mystics +2
Through the Ages +2
Galaxy Trucker -1
Merchants of Venus +1
Merchants and Mauraders +2
Android Netrunner +3
King of Tokyo -1
Alien Frontiers +2
Also submitted - Core Worldsx3, Battles of Westeros (by geekmail), Dungeon Fighter, Atlantis Rising, Castles of Burgundy x3, Caylus, Agricola: All Creatures, Solo Gaming (Mage Knight, D&D Ravenloft, Thunderbolt Apache Leader), Fortune and Glory, Claustrophobia x2, Cyclades, Hansa Teutonica, Trajan, Ora et Labora, D-Day Dice, Luna
So given that list, I would say the top contenders are
3. Lords of Waterdeep
4. Android: Netrunner
5. Core Worlds
6. Castles of Burgundy
Honorable mention goes to Through the Ages, Le Havre, Merchants and Marauders,Claustrophobia and Mice and Mystics for their +2 results.
Tonight or tomorrow morning it is off to the game store (Dream Wizards in Rockville, MD most likely) to see what their selections hold (I love the feeling of buying a game and not having to wait for it to arrive).
In the meantime, I will send BGG links to all six of those games to my girlfriend so she can give her reactions.
As a side note, instead of using my weekly reward on a CD this week, despite my roll and interest, I have decided to use it on a book, specifically the third book in the Foundation Series. I have read the first two, and just got my hands on the fifth, so I want to fill in the gap before I plunge ahead.
So I am starting to count my chickens before they hatch, and have been obsessively looking at games that I can get for my success this month.
First my brag: I have maintained at least a half hour of exercise and maintained my caloric goals for the last month. I lost 8 pounds, and have have improved my resting pulse and endurance considerably.
The problem I run into is this: I have recently been buying games that play in about an hour, but I am beginning to feel that I have too many games of that style in my collection. So I start thinking about larger games. But the longer games that I love that I currently own (CitOW, BSG, Tikal, and Puerto Rico) just don't get played, and the possibilities of getting them to the table seems to be less and less.
Second problem is that I rarely have more than one opponent. I play against my brother or against my girlfriend, but rarely at the same time. Due to schedule issues, playing with 4 or 5 almost never happens, and 3 is only a little better.
The games I have been eyeing up recently include:
Age of Steam or one of the other permutations of it
Lords of Waterdeep
Mice and Mystics
Through the Ages
Merchants of Venus
Merchants and Mauraders
Kings of Tokyo
Please do not limit yourself to those options, but what do you think I should get?
Another week has gone by. I have switched from attempting to lose weight (I lost 8 pounds over the four weeks, and have improved my resting pulse considerably), to working on building strength and muscle.
I have succeeded in maintaining my diet and exercise plan, even doing bodyweight strength work on saturday when I was stranded without exercise shorts.
Since I have succeeded for the week, I get to make the dice roll- 1-9 I get nothing, 10-19 I get a CD, and 20 I get a game. So far I have rolled a CD in each of the first three weeks... Here goes:
