Note that I'm only covering BGG hosted design contests. If you are hosting a contest outside of BGG that you would like to see covered in this blog then please contact me to discuss pricing.

Welcome back to the long-delayed PNP News! This may be one of the longest delays I've ever had between posts and I apologize for this. There were several real life issues that have come up the last few months, some of which were difficult and some which were very positive - but all requiring a lot of time. Things have finally started slowing down so I wanted to ease back into this block with the first of many catch-up posts.

I've highlighted 15 games in this post so that you don't have to wait for me to put together a giant post of 50 games. I figure it's better to do incremental updates both so that I don't burn myself out and good games don't disappear in a giant list.

Thank you everyone for your patience while the blog has been offline. It feels good to be back!

Hello everyone! Welcome back to the PNP News! In this post, I'll be covering the games released during the second half of March.

This post covers a wide variety of games both thematically and in amount of crafting required. There are a few roll-and-write style games that require no crafting - and a few large projects with lots of tiles and components. There's even an old World War 2 era game that is now available to PNP yourself! You'll find something here regardless of what type of PNP projects you like to do.

I'll be providing an update on the current PNP Design contests soon. In the meantime, let's get to the games!

New Games

Crazy Robot Factory is a 1 to 4 player game. This is the newly re-released third edition of this awesome PNP game. In this game the, you run a robot factory and a software glitch caused the parts on the conveyor belt to get out of order. You've got to use programming cards to get everything back on track or else your parts will be destroyed. The PNP files include tiles, cards, and components for three different levels of play. I've played an earlier version of this and I think it is a lot of fun.
The free PNP files for the full game are available in the File Section on the game's BGG page.

Sabotage designed by Christian Gabriel Bach, Jørgen Milners, and Viggo Torstensson
Sabotage is a 2 to 4 player game. This is a historical game created by Danish resistance fighters during the German occupation in World War 2. It simulates a real act of sabotage against a locomotive factory being used by the German forces. In the game, players are trying to gather the materials they need to sabotage equipment before the guards can find them. It is a roll-and-move game and the rules do not sound awesome so it probably isn't as interesting from a game mechanic perspective - but the game has a very unique history and it's awesome to have it available to everyone as a PNP. Game components are available in the image section with English rule translation in the file section.

Welcome to the PNP News! I'm a bit behind on both this blog and some of the design contest work. (It has been a busy month in the real life job.)

I've gone through my subscription feed and gathered up the games for the first half of March. I'll try to get the rest of the month - as well as April as soon as possible.

If you like your PNP games easy to make, you will find a lot to love in this post. There are several games from the 9 card contest which are all very easy to craft. There are also several roll-and-write games that require no crafting at all. Those who enjoy a larger PNP project will find a few wargames and children's games. Let's get to it!

New Games

Under Falling Skies is a solitaire game. You are protecting a base of humans during an alien invasion. You must manage your weapons, expand your base, and defeat the aliens before the mothership can enter Earth's atmosphere. The game is just 9 cards and requires a few dice and other components.

This looks like a fun one to play with the kids.

PNP Design Contests

Upcoming Contests (maybe)
Two of my favorite hobbies are PNP games (obviously) and tinkering with simple electronics. I had the idea to combine the two into a PNP Design Contest where the games had some sort of electrical component. Think of games like Dark Tower, Operation, or Simon. At the moment, I'm trying to gauge interest from others in the PNP community. This contest could require purchasing some electronic hardware such as LEDs, wires, and microcontrollers to participate.
We are just talking about it right now. There are no dates set at this point and the contest may not actually happen if there isn't enough interest. If this is something that you might enjoy, please come to the discussion thread and share your thoughts.

Current Contests
2019 54-Card Game Design Contest hosted by Dustin Culbertson.

2019 9 Card Game Print and Play Design Contest
This is the fourth annual contest dedicated to games that are contained entirely on 9 cards and a few common gaming items. This is my first year hosting the contest. The contest dates were recently extended (due to an illness and other personal delays on my end) and is now accepting entries until March 31, 2019. This contest is always a lot of fun and the design limitations generate some really innovative ideas. Also, thanks to the small size, all of the games are really easy to print and assemble.
Entry Deadline: March 31, 2019
Voting Deadline: May 12, 2019
An additional note on this contest: Professor Ethan Ham (simenzo on BGG) has invited his students studying game design at Bradley University to participate in the contest. There are tons of new and unique games entered in the contest this year from these first-time designers. Come check them out!

2019 Two-Player Design Contest
This is the seventh annual contest focused on two-player games. If you primarily play games with a significant other, this is the contest for you. This contest always generates some really great stuff. The contest is no longer accepting new entries so it is time to play all the awesome games already there.

2019 Roll and Write Game Design Contest
I believe this is the first ever BGG contest dedicated to Roll and Write Games. (There have been other contests but not hosted on BGG.) There are already several great games entered so try them out or enter some of your own!

Storm Over Dublin is a 2 player game. This is an area-impulse wargame covering the 1916 Easter Rising and the 1922 Battle of Dublin - both part of the Irish War of Independence. This game looks terrific in the photos! This is a large PNP project with 3 counter sheets and a nine page map.

Viva La Revolution! with design and art by Edward Farren

Wildfire Rescue! with design and art by Karl Juhlke
Wildfire Rescue! is a 2 to 4 player game. You are park rangers who must battle a forest fire in order to rescue campers. The forest is randomly generated and you will need special tools to make it through the different terrains. The fire spreads through a random die roll at the end of each turn. Apothecary is a 2 to 4 player game. In this game, you are playing as medieval herbalists who have come to a small town to cure the sick. But be careful, if you commit too much fraud and they will kick you out of town. The PNP file includes a large board and several individual cards.

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the PNP News and the first post of 2019! (Or at least the first post covering games released in 2019.)

First off, I wanted to announce that Print and Play Games News is now on Twitter. It may be slightly redundant if you're already subscribed to the blog on BGG, but I thought it could be fun nonetheless.
@PNPGamesNews
I'd like to periodically cycle through my banner pictures to highlight different PNP games. I have lots of games that I photographed to use, but if you'd like me to feature your game, please send me a geekmail. (You need to own the copyright or have permission of the copyright owner to request that.)

Before we get to the news, I also wanted to talk briefly about one of my other interests (it can't be games all the time). I volunteer at a school to teach children the basics of coding and introductory robotics. I write most of my own lesson plans and a few other teachers have asked if they could use them. So I've created a new blog where I'll be posting those lesson plans but also just posting my ideas and experiences with various technologies. There isn't a ton there yet since it's still fairly new, but I'm hoping it grows into something fun. It may be a little bit niche at times (i.e. my last post was on programming my high school graphing calculator) but hopefully others occasionally find the content interesting.
Circuits and Code on WeHappyFew.net
I have also created a Twitter account for the blog as well.
@CircuitsAndCode
I've posted a Paper Circuit Valentines Card for kids, a project for the Makey Makey, and some comparisons of Scratch and Snap!

PNP Design Contests

Upcoming Contests
2019 54-Card Game Design Contest Discussion Thread
This contest limits games to only a deck of cards with no other components. It's a very cool design challenge. If you'd like to join in the conversation to help shape the future on the contest, please join in the discussion thread.

Current Contests
2019 9 Card Game Print and Play Design Contest
This is the fourth annual contest dedicated to games that are contained entirely on 9 cards and a few common gaming items. This is my first year hosting the contest. The contest is accepting entries until March 03, 2019. This is always a lot of fun and the design limitations generate some really innovative ideas. Also, thanks to the small size, all of the games are really easy to print and assemble.

2019 Two-Player Design Contest
This is the seventh annual contest focused on two-player games. If you primarily play games with a significant other, this is the contest for you. You may enter games in this contest until February 14, 2019 (appropriately for the contest - Valentine's Day!) This contest always generates some really great stuff.

Completed Contests
2018 Mint Tin
This annual contest focuses on games small enough to fit into an Altoids tin. It wrapped up earlier this month and winners were announced on Feb 07. The winning game was Pack It Tin by Rob Sparks.

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the PNP News!

This post wraps up the newly released and updated games from the end of the year. It also includes information on several PNP design contests currently happening now and coming soon.

I will be revisiting 2018 in an upcoming post. I think I missed a few games that were released during the summer (I had an insane summer and fell behind) so I'll be checking over my saved links to make sure nothing is left out.

I also have a long list of games that I've saved to follow up on. These are games that are labeled as PNP on BGG, but as far as I can tell, the designer never released files for the game. I'll be going through the list again to see if there's been any updates to any of those games. Hopefully some of those designers have been able to finish up those games.

Let's jump into the news with the PNP Contests!

Welcome back to another round of the PNP News! In this post I'll be taking a look at game released during the first two weeks of November.

Let's take a quick look at a few PNP Design Contests.
Upcoming Contests
I have posted a discussion thread for the 2019 9 Card Contest. It will start early in January. We're discussing a few potential rule changes and a new category focused on micro Legacy style games. If there's something you'd love to see changed from previous years, please come and join the conversation.

Current Contests
2018 Mint Tin
This annual contest focuses on games small enough to fit into an Altoids tin. It is accepting entries until January 11, 2019.

2018 Children's Game Print and Play Design Contest
I host this annual contest focusing entirely on games for families to play with young children. There are separate categories for different ages to make it easy to find appropriate games. The contest is accepting entries through December 16, 2017.

Microbadge
I wanted to also do a quick plug for the PNP News microbadge by Jake Staines. It's currently sitting at 293 owners. Do you think we can push it up to 300 before 2019?
