I got a new board game for Christmas: Mage Knight. It's on my table right now, and I've read the walkthrough and am all set to start playing my first (solo) game.

What it brings to mind is the weird-to-me way game rules are written these days.

The following was written on November 13. Just belatedly remembered to publish it now.

I'm pretty rapidly headed toward a situation I've dreaded: putting up another whole closet full of games for sale. And it includes a game I preordered and have been charged for but haven't received yet.

It's my "turning-point project" again. I've been paying more attention than ever to my gaming life, with a view to streamlining it for the future. I don't want to be just hanging on to a bunch of old games that I used to be into. I know I'm not going to ever get back to the past or bring my "glory days" back to life, so I had better just take a good look at what works (and what doesn't) for me now.

(I wrote the following on October 21 apparently; I just neglected to post it until now.)

I'm beginning to think "inwardly conflicted" might be a sufficient description of my personality. It seems I'm always torn between two (or more) things--or not quite satisfied with one thing and looking for something better.

As I mentioned a few blog posts ago, I'm making an effort to get my gaming orientation reevaluated and pinned down more by my sixtieth birthday (in March). I figure that'll take some experimentation.

While replying to a thread comment this morning, I realized something about myself--and I guess it ties in with this "turning-point project" I've been into. On the whole, I'm a lazy gamer.

Yesterday I broke my solitaire habit and played a game with my wife and another couple. Thought I'd blog a bit about how that went.

Once again a long losing streak has put me in the mood to say, "I hate games!"

I've periodically gotten into that mood for years--probably all my gaming life. It's about time I asked myself why--and what I can do about it.

, I've come to realize a couple important things about myself that affects gaming and practically all else as well.

What "rarevos" said (based on something he read probably) is that many people say they want to do such-and-such when they really mean they want to have done such-and-such. That certainly gave me pause for reflection!

Now that I've had months (at least) to reflect on it, I realize I've spent my whole life doing just that--saying I'm interested in something or that I want to do it, when I really mean I wish it were checked off my bucket list.

I think I'm actually making progress in the turning-point project I described a few blog posts ago. That in itself surprises me, as usually an idea like that escapes me after a short time and I move on to other things.

Still mulling over the GeekList I mentioned last time, a few new insights have cropped up.

I threw together a GeekList last week--pretty quickly and just for fun. To my surprise, it drew a lot of good feedback, and as I look it over now, I can see that it reveals a few things about me and my kind of gaming. The GeekList I'm referring to is this one: Twenty Wow! Moments in Gaming

Aaargh! I just had another tough purchase decision, and it's making me revisit another aspect of my turning-point project.

Preorders for Lock 'n Load Tactical: Heroes of the Pacific are being processed, and I had to decide whether to cancel mine or push it through. I hesitated overnight and then decided to go forward with the order. It sounds like a great game, and it'll keep my LnL collection complete.

Yet, since I first discovered LnL in 2008, I've played only about six or eight times. Some of the games are still in shrinkwrap, and most are still unpunched. And I'm no collector, so what am I doing?
