Minnesota"‘Well, at any rate, the Dormouse said—’ the Hatter went on, looking anxiously round to see if he would deny it too: but the Dormouse denied nothing, being fast asleep. ‘After that,’ continued the Hatter, ‘I cut some more bread-and-butter—’""‘But what did the Dormouse say?’ one of the jury asked. ‘That I can’t remember,’ said the Hatter." -
Yesterday my wife and I met with a financial adviser and went over some basic stuff. At one point, my wife said she'd always had the numbers down but didn't get the emotional component; now she's starting to see how much of money management (and most everything, for that matter) has to do with emotions or the human element. She contrasted that with my attitude, saying that, unlike her, I always saw the importance of the emotional/human element. I chimed in and said, "And now I'm starting to learn that the numbers are important too."

Solitary Soundings
Musings of a solitary gamer.
"The advantage of conversation is such that, for want of company, a man had better talk to a post than let his thoughts lie smoking and smothering."

I'm still struggling with the concept of story-based games, sometimes questioning whether they're games at all. It's a philosophical conundrum I've unintentionally made a hobby of for many years now.

Lately I've grown weary of the long, involved games I usually play, and one thing I've done is turn to good, old-fashioned solitaire--patience--the card game for one. Or actually, a big set of card games for one, though many people only know of Klondike and call that solitaire.

Upon perusing one or two of my hundreds of blog posts, a reader sometimes asks why I stubbornly stick with the gaming hobby. I just got that question again the other day, in my other blog.
The short answer, I suppose, is hope. Despite my misgivings and complaints, I keep catching glimpses of light at the end of the tunnel; I keep believing the hobby will become absolutely wonderful for me once I've straightened a few things out. I just need to find the right game or shift my attitude in the right direction--something like that.

Usually I don't like to admit, even to myself, that I ever change. Sure, I grow older, like everybody, and go through the various phases of life, but inside I see myself as the same person I've always been.
From another perspective, though, there are changes I might take note of. For instance, my attitude toward games and which ones work for me.

I've usually got a lot of energy and tenacity when it comes to getting things done. And I guess I've dealt with my share of adversity. But when it comes to hobby and leisure-time activities, I'm easily discouraged if they don't run smoothly. To me, that's supposed to be a time for me to get a break and just cruise for a while.

Years ago, I was in a friend's tai chi class, when he quoted his teacher (another friend) as saying, "Slower is better." It had to do with practicing martial-arts moves at a very slow, deliberate pace, even though in an actual fight you'd of course move quickly. Practicing in slow motion helps you get it just right and feel the energy and the flow.
I never got far in tai chi or in martial arts, but I remember that saying. And lately it has become almost a mantra for me. It applies to my gaming hobby and other aspects of my life as well.

I got enthused about wargaming somewhere between 1968 and 1970, and I was an avid wargamer for decades. Maybe I still am, though I've switched media and often play pseudo-wargames on the PC. I've got a board wargame set up on the table right now and will be playing it this weekend.
But I'll be playing it the way I played and enjoyed wargames for many years--by simply playing both sides against each other.

Well--so far, that's all I've done. I haven't actually started playing a board game yet. But to me it's a case of turning a new leaf, or turning back to a good old leaf.

I've been so into PC strategy games for the past several years that sometimes I almost forget I still have a closet full of board games (including a lot of wargames). What ever happened to those? And would I enjoy setting one up and playing it now?
