Random Ruminations

It seems to be part of my nature to reflect on all my experiences--even the hobby experiences many people consider trivial. And I reflect best when I'm typing. So, here are some of my thoughts on games and gaming. Enjoy them if you can, comment if you like.

. . . the more I appreciate classic tabletop games.

I've been saying that for years, and maybe I'm now at a turning point where I'm going to start walking the walk, not just talking the talk.

Some people hate negativity--ranting, complaining, griping, whining, bitching, criticizing, and all that nasty stuff. If you're one of those people, 'bye for now; if you can tough it out, stick around. 'Cause I'm in a mood to list and discuss some of the things that repeatedly pop up and annoy me when I'm busy trying to enjoy a good game.

As anyone who has read even one of my many blog posts knows all too well, I'm perpetually locked in indecision--torn over which game to play next, whether to buy a new one, whether to recommit myself to an old one, or whatever.

I've long-since abandoned hope of ever settling on one game that's perfect for me, or even a set of games I can cycle through and always enjoy. Some new game always catches my eye, or a game sale gets me wanting to try a game or series I'd always passed up before. Nevertheless, every time I spend a few hours playing a game, I reflect on the experience and wonder how satisfying or worthwhile it was.

Years ago, while pondering on the various games I played, I came up with labels for certain types of games. One was "split-dimensional." To me, that referred to a strategy-level wargame with an explicit tactical combat system. Master of Orion, for example.

Being an old fogy, I delayed catching up with the times. I grew up on printed books, including game rules, manuals, and strategy guides. So, even when I bought Dominions 5: Warriors of the Faith last year, I made a point of also getting the strategy guidebook for it. However, even the Illwinter website suggests going to YouTube instead nowadays, and looking for DasTactic videos and others.

For many years, I struggled against the rising temptation of personal electronic devices, starting with the PC. Even in the 1980s something about them bothered me. Yet, over time, I seem to have lost the battle, and for the past several years I've been mainly a video gamer. However, I have a hunch that may be about to shift again.

Got a notice in my inbox that a game on my wishlist was on sale. Mildly curious, I took a look. It was Warlock: Master of the Arcane (complete edition), and it was down to six or seven bucks. I'd have ignored it if it was twice that price, but I quickly checked the ratings and reviews and decided to buy it.

While I was at it, since I thought I was saving so much money, I bought the Terran Khanate expansion (deluxe-edition upgrade) for Master of Orion - Conquer the Stars, paying full price ($15) for that.

Then, later, I was browsing around a little and got reminded that there's such a thing as Warlock 2. So, it looks like I bought an outdated version of that series.

I didn't need any new games. I'll probably use the Terran faction in MOO4 now and then, though.

What I got for my money, ironically, is the thing I didn't want at all: Master of Orion 3. I'd been avoiding it for years because it has such a bad reputation. But I read one dissenting view; there's at least one experienced gamer in this world who loves MOO3. And now I want to find out for myself what it's like. So, someday I probably will.

But when will I learn that most all good games generate new, improved sequels? And that there's no catching up in the collection game?

It seems the collector in me is always at odds with the game player in me. The latter is perfectly content with what's at hand, but the former is always eager to grab something new that might somehow be even better.

The Early Years

Master of Orion was one of the first PC strategy games I played. I bought MOO1 when it was new, around 1993 or so. Before then, I was playing Civilization--an impressive game, but one which went against my grain by including so much of an economic system and handling warfare in an odd way. I took a liking to MOO and played a whole lot of it. The only thing I remember disliking is the fifty-turn limit on tactical battles; it seemed too long to me--stalemates would drag on (especially with the slow computer I probably had back then).

Two or three of my favorite games are generations behind in sound and graphics. Sometimes people ask me why I play them when so many good up-to-date games are available. Is it just nostalgia? Or am I stuck in the mud?
