Random Ruminations

It seems to be part of my nature to reflect on all my experiences--even the hobby experiences many people consider trivial. And I reflect best when I'm typing. So, here are some of my thoughts on games and gaming. Enjoy them if you can, comment if you like.

For many years, I struggled against the rising temptation of personal electronic devices, starting with the PC. Even in the 1980s something about them bothered me. Yet, over time, I seem to have lost the battle, and for the past several years I've been mainly a video gamer. However, I have a hunch that may be about to shift again.

Got a notice in my inbox that a game on my wishlist was on sale. Mildly curious, I took a look. It was Warlock: Master of the Arcane (complete edition), and it was down to six or seven bucks. I'd have ignored it if it was twice that price, but I quickly checked the ratings and reviews and decided to buy it.

While I was at it, since I thought I was saving so much money, I bought the Terran Khanate expansion (deluxe-edition upgrade) for Master of Orion - Conquer the Stars, paying full price ($15) for that.

Then, later, I was browsing around a little and got reminded that there's such a thing as Warlock 2. So, it looks like I bought an outdated version of that series.

I didn't need any new games. I'll probably use the Terran faction in MOO4 now and then, though.

What I got for my money, ironically, is the thing I didn't want at all: Master of Orion 3. I'd been avoiding it for years because it has such a bad reputation. But I read one dissenting view; there's at least one experienced gamer in this world who loves MOO3. And now I want to find out for myself what it's like. So, someday I probably will.

But when will I learn that most all good games generate new, improved sequels? And that there's no catching up in the collection game?

It seems the collector in me is always at odds with the game player in me. The latter is perfectly content with what's at hand, but the former is always eager to grab something new that might somehow be even better.

The Early Years

Master of Orion was one of the first PC strategy games I played. I bought MOO1 when it was new, around 1993 or so. Before then, I was playing Civilization--an impressive game, but one which went against my grain by including so much of an economic system and handling warfare in an odd way. I took a liking to MOO and played a whole lot of it. The only thing I remember disliking is the fifty-turn limit on tactical battles; it seemed too long to me--stalemates would drag on (especially with the slow computer I probably had back then).

Two or three of my favorite games are generations behind in sound and graphics. Sometimes people ask me why I play them when so many good up-to-date games are available. Is it just nostalgia? Or am I stuck in the mud?

Not sure why it is, but I've never been able to start into a game without feeling at least a bit of trepidation. It's supposed to be fun, and I should be excited. And I am--but I'm also aware that it's going to be a challenge, and I wonder if I'm up for that.

So, last time I wrote about the six "wargamey" PC strategy games I keep installed and play as often as I can. Besides those, I have six other games installed--for variety's sake or just because they're good games I can't get enough of.

Reading what others write about video games, it's pretty clear to me that I'm in a small minority simply because I prefer strategy games, and turn-based games at that. Furthermore, I care nothing about economic games, political games, or anything else besides games of conquest. I'm an old wargamer who wants to continue playing wargames, but only solo on the PC. I'm not much good at them, but they're more psychologically rewarding to me than any other kind of game.

Yesterday I uninstalled all but 12 of the 27 games I'd had installed. It's my way of doing what board gamers call a purge or "culling the collection." It's often so tempting and easy to buy new games, but then we realize we don't have nearly enough time to play them, much as we might like to.

MOO is one of my most-played games and still one of the most satisfying. But why not MOO2? And why do I keep looking for good alternatives, like Age of Wonders and Dominions? And then why, even after finding these other highly satisfying games, do I keep coming back and playing MOO over and over again?
