Day 478. April 23, 2018. Lagos...

A few days ago I reached a milestone in the personal gaming belt. The 2000th logged notch in the BGG. And since last year's 1st 000's Awards was so well received and I had fun in creating and publishing the geeklist, this year I decided to do it again. Heck, I might do this a tradition, since it's a lot easier (and fun) to evaluate the overall experience in 1000 gaming sessions, than to rank games in a Top anything list.

Just like last year, these awards are, hopefully, representative of my current gaming environments, milestones, and evolution. You can check the geeklist for full details. Here, I'll only write a short line for each award.

Most Played Award winner: Limes

Honorable Mentions: Flamme Rouge

The 2000th Gameplay Award: Nemo's War (second edition)
The 2000th game played and what it might represent in my current gaming tastes.

Looking forward to the next 1000th gameplay!

Always a good morning with this sight.

Ana really wanted to play a game tonight, but alas, the work overload caught up with her, and by the time the dust settled, after-dinner and after-Alice, she's was done. Struggling, she nonetheless still wanted something to play. It can be fast! "Herbaceous is fast!", I replied!

Fast to teach, fast to play and relaxing theme. Despite being a push your luck, this time neither of us felt the competition. I went along and potted first. Ana stayed until the end, using the leftovers. She used them well, and it was only her Large Pot that failed her in the end, without enough similar herbs to go around.

Herb farmers.

Few games played today and no traveling in the geek land. but I hope you've enjoyed the latest iteration of The 000's Awards!

Thanks for reading and see you tomorrow.

Day 86. March 27, 2017. Lagos...

A couple of weeks ago I reached a milestone in my gaming. The 1000th logged play in the BGG.

I considered doing something to mark it, but Top 10, 25, 50 or 100 lists sprout like mushrooms every week these days. Besides, all the games I play are worth something in some degree or another, in some context or another, so it's very hard for me to choose between two games when deciding which one is better. I might go through that process one day, but not now.

So I created The 1st 000's Awards geeklist to celebrate. The awards are, hopefully, representative of my current gaming environments, gaming milestones or gaming achievements. You can check the geeklist for full detail. Here, I'll only write a short paragraph for each award.

Most Played Award winner: 7 Wonders Duel.
Honorable Mentions: Patchwork and Splendor
A simple statistics award. And the only one of this kind.

The Surprise Award winner: Agricola.
Honorable Mentions: Kingdom Builder.
The games that came out of left field and surprised me in the positive.

The Highlight Award winner: Lisboa.
My first Con, playing at the time, an unpublished game, taught by its creator and accompanied by good friends at my side. Enough said.

The Watch Me Playing Award winner: Rhino Hero
Honorable Mentions: Escape: The Curse of the Temple and Happy Salmon.
The games that captivate all the attention when they were being played and serve as a great intro to non-gamers or gamer gamenights.

The Best Under 30 Minutes Award winner: Kingdom Builder
Honorable Mentions: 7 Wonders Duel and Istanbul.
My most frequent gaming situation. A quick two-player session with plenty of decisions.

The Still Funny After 1 Hour Award winner: Alchemists
Honorable Mentions: Dead of Winter and Condottiere.
Games or sessions that lasted over 60 minutes but managed to keep a smile on our faces for its duration.

The Solo Award winner: Aquaducts
Honorable Mentions: Friday and Onirim
Because a stay-at-home gamer dad is always on the look for a quick gaming fix!

The Daughter Award winner: Rory's Story Cubes
Honorable Mentions: My Very First Games: Animal upon Animal.
My two-year-old daughter's favorite board games.

The Wife Award winner: Catan
Honorable Mentions: Splendor and Alchemists
My wife's favorite games. Negotiation, deduction, quick and funny.

The Conversion Award:
Catan -> Carcassonne -> Cacao -> Agricola -> Glen More
My mother's evolution as a boardgamer.

The Gaming Buddy(ies) Award winner: Viticulture EE
Honorable Mentions: Lords of Waterdeep and Yedo
Games played at their best with the same gaming group and after multiple plays.

The Not in Collection Award winner: Five Tribes
Honorable Mentions: Orléans, Welcome to the Dungeon and Via Nebula

The 1000th Gameplay Award: Flip City
The 1000th game played and what it might represent in my gaming tastes.

It was fun creating this award geeklist. Looking forward to my next 1000th gameplay!

The packaged arrived last week, while we were in Lisboa. So after a quick visit to the postal office, Fugitive was being unboxed at home. Really loved the art. Hope to get to the table soon enough.

Unboxed Fugitive.

Amazing art.

A full set of hideouts.

By chance, Ana had to skip work today. Off all days, it actually turns out to be a good day to stay at home. So when Alice went for her nap, I started to unbox and prepare Agricola. This time we tried to draft the cards like Joel suggested the last time we spoke. With a bunch of ovens, baking apparatus and the baker itself among the pool, I went for those. I have a knack for bread.

Once more into the land of farming.

A travelling baker in training.

So it was without great surprise that after my bread workshop was well established I was able to produce 10 food in one turn and with 1 worker! Not bad. I was practically set for the next two harvest seasons! With food out of the way, I was able to work in other aspects of the farm without pressure, early in the game. Making babies, preparing my future stone house, digging a well. It paid off. I broke my Agricola record with 62 points! Without killing or eating a single animal! A truly vegetarian victory! A good gameplay gift on my birthday.

Game in progress.

Keeping downtime short.

Ana's farm, mid-game.

My farm mid-game.

A master at bread baking.

My farm.

Ana's farm.

Baker for the win.

Thanks for reading and see you tomorrow.
