iOS Board Games

Among the best things in life is playing printed games in person with family and close friends. When those are not convenient we like iOS Board Games. News, reviews, previews, and opinions about board gaming on iPhones, iPads, iPods and even Android devices. (iPhone board games, iPad board games, iPod board games, Android board games)

App News Bits

Scythe Trailer Drops on Steam Listing
As you know, Scythe is coming to digital platforms, published by Asmodee Digital. Last week the game got an official listing on Steam along with a brief trailer which you see in this tweet:

The release date on Steam says Q1 2018. We'll let you know as we learn more!

Board Game: Roll For It!

Roll for It! Enters Beta
We received an email this week letting us know that Roll for It! is entering beta. Thunderbox Entertainment has been at work on the game for a while and we're looking forward to checking it out.

Here's our latest look at the game from Gen Con 2017:

Board Game: Axis & Allies

Axis and Allies Possibly Going Digital
W. Eric Martin informed me of a possible hint that Axis and Allies may be coming to digital. According to an interview in Glixel with Chris Cocks, it looks like a digital version of Axis and Allies could be coming in the next 12 to 18 months.

Here is the full quote:
Quote:
My interest, bringing some of these vastly complicated, long-to-set-up titles to the iPad or computer, seem to also align both with a larger call for ports and Wizards of the Coast’s experiments. Cocks points to The Lords of Waterdeep, which was published by Wizards in 2012 and then released on iOS a year later, as a good example of that. “I love what Playdek did with that,” he says. “We’ve found that if we can bring new fans in and give them something fun to play, they will generally reward us. There is a great synergy between digital and table-top players.”

But why, I ask, hasn’t Axis and Allies come to tablet yet? “I think we will be correcting that in 12 to 18 months,” he says. “We might throw some fun variants in there as well. I want to to make new games. I want to make variants of existing games. What about Axis and Allies and Zombies?”

Meteorfall is Releasing January 25th
Next week Meteorfall is releasing worldwide. This game has an Adventure Time esque style and has rogue-like and deck-building elements. I haven't been able to try it yet but it looks amazing. Check out some of Dave's impressions on Stately Play.

Here is an amazing launch trailer:

Acram Teases Something New in 2018
Acram Digital started the year by teasing us with this tantalizing tweet:

What could it all mean? Time will tell!

Welcome to the 2017 Gift Guide!

In 2016 it occurred to us that the gift guide is basically just a collection of some of the best games we feel every digital board gamer should own. So, we decided this year that we would instead make a Top 10 List of Apps Every Board Gamer should own. The concept is the same, only the format has changed. If you open up an iOS or Android device this Christmas or just want some digital recommendations, this is the place to start.

To help us in this endeavor, we’ve enlisted Milena Gubernic and Matt Thrower two big board games fans and lovers and digital board games.

Today we continue with #4 and #3 Note: Mina’s list is not ranked, so I am just choosing two to share each day.

This is one of two instances on this list of my enjoying the app and not the associated physical game. The app itself is relatively basic looking compared to the splendor of Asmodee's releases, but it is highly functional, intuitive and clear. If you want a fast-paced and slightly more cerebral (as compared to some of my other selections) hand management, tableau-building game on the go, this is my recommendation.

Occasionally impossible things are proven to exist, such as a mobile game that somehow squeezes a card row, four player boards and a million tiny wooden discs into a phone screen. That it offers humour, a staggering AI and a wealth of game modes on top is little short of a miracle.

I've loved Pathfinder Adventures from the moment it arrived until today, where I still rev it up from time to time to make a new party and start out on the Rise of the Runelords campaign one more time. I know that the game has been filled with bugs and strange choices by Obsidian, but I don't care. It's still one of the most absorbing mobile games I've played and one of the few where I can lose track of time and realize I'm still playing at 3am. The only bad thing about Pathfinder is that it doesn't appear to be making Obsidian any money, which means I'm not sure we'll ever see Skull & Shackles or Wrath of the Righteous which would be a huge bummer.

Despite its age, this is still the definitive digital board game for me. The iOS version is really one of the main reasons this blog even exists. The new version on PC and Android has really evened the playing field and provided a great digital implementation of this game to everyone!

I have a somewhat complicated relationship with Small World. I don't actually love the game because I find it to be too aggressive and random and it doesn't make me feel like I've accomplished much of anything at the end (I tend to prefer games of building rather than destroying), but I adore the artwork and find it very relaxing to look at. The app is, like all other Asmodee releases beautiful to look at and with several maps to conquer and various AI's to defeat, it presents all kinds of challenges! I just wish I could play with my favorite expansion for the game - Tales and Legends.

It's hard not to love an adaptation that invents a whole new way to play, just for mobile, and still implements the old version with style and panache. But if that doesn't do it for you, it still deserves to win for the best solitaire version of any mobile board game, ever.

Surprise! You're shocked, right? Much like Galaxy Trucker, CGE has taken an incredible tabletop game and turned it into an even better digital game. We waited a long time for TtA, but it was worth it. The UI is fantastic, the AI is tough, the online multiplayer is flawless, and the single-player challenges are maddening. It's everything we could have hoped for back when a digital version of TtA was announced back around 2010 and, somehow, more.

This is the only game to appear on all four of our lists this year. It is also #1 on two our lists. Galaxy Trucker redefines what a digital board game can be. If Carcassonne is the start of the revolution, Galaxy Trucker is the next level of disruption. The lengthy single player campaign and custom expansion just for the digital version really push this one to the top.
