Bobby's Games

I will be posting monthly recaps of my gaming which I have been doing in GeekLists. I'll also be commenting on games on occasion, though I can tell you that I will be behind the curve because I just don't get to play the new games as soon as some people do.

Somewhere there was a geeklist which promoted June as the month where you played old games and learned no new games. I made it all the way to the last day of the month before playing a new game. Yeah, I played some new expansions, but no games until the 30th. I'd claim it was just bad luck, but I requested the game because I've wanted to try it out.

On the alea challenges front, I did get one more game played in the medium box line.

I played 26 different games a total of 64 times with one of them being new to me and eight of them being games I played in May. I played eight expansions a total of 45 times with two of them being new to me and two of them were played last month.

Here are the games I played in June.

Can't Stop
Times Played: 3
Last Month Played: 1/10

I thought Nico was going to be in attendance, so I made sure to grab this classic, which he hasn't played. It turned out that he was on yet another vacation, but we played this anyway. Abby showed that the fearlessness of the young can be a good thing, when it works, and won the game.

The second time we played this month was the following week after Michael bought a set for Abby.. When I arrived he, Rick, and Nico were just about to finish playing a three-player game, then I joined them as the fourth player. Rick ended up winning that game by claiming the 2, the 3, and the 4.

Elder Sign
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 3/12

A three-player game which had the death of two investigators and had a lot of dice frozen during the game, but we prevailed and beat Hastur and his minions.

The next game had us facing off against Yog-Sothoth. I'll jinx our next playing when he is the GOO and say that we seem to have extraordinarily easy games when he's the one "threatening" the world.

Finstere Flure

Last Month Played: 4/12

Mike asked me to bring this along since he knew there would be five at his place and it is a fun game which works best with more players. Ian was the best at letting others get caught by the monster and finished with the win.

Last Month Played: 6/09

Three players. Ben had not played before and Michael had played it a long time ago. When I unfolded the board, it ended up with the symmetrical side up, which is probably better for first-timers. The two of them started on the bottom of the board, leaving me alone on the top, not that there is a whole lot of fighting to prevent land chains from growing in a three-player game.

I would have scored a lot more, but I got myself into a position which happened in the past. During the second half of the game, I waited too long to collect extra animal cards to connect up cities, and when I was ready to do it, the stack was almost depleted. I need to remember to collect a few animal cards here and there during the game so I have them as the end nears. In the end, it was a close game, but I won. I suspect I'll have a tougher time the next time the three of us play.

Keltis: Das Würfelspiel
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 5/12

Re-theme this as the Brave dice game.

Kingdom Builder
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 4/12

Expansion Played: Nomads in both of the games.

We had a terrible set-up for scoring (the Knights, the Discoverers, and the Hermits) and started with a fifth player who left early in the game because of the time. In other words, not the most fun game. It also reinforced my feeling that playing with five would be a bad idea. I put the fifth color in the expansion box so it will never see the light of day in my set ever again.

The second game was much better. We had two of the in-game scoring cards and three of the expansion boards, including the one which game us the walls. It was a lot of fun.

Dave loves the game and occasionally asks people in the store to play. This was one of those and the person who didn't know what they were doing when the game started ended up being the winner. Dice are so random!

Last Will
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: New to me

This was the only new game I played this month. It appears like it is based on the book/movie(s)/play Brewster's Millions.

Charles showed up, played this game, went broke, then had to go home and tell his wife.

Lords of Waterdeep
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 4/12

Matthew bought this game and I did my best to help with an explanation as he was going through the rules. It was a tight game and I made the mistake of [pointing out that iw as going to score a bunch of points on my turn and was tasked with a mandatory quest so I ended up out of the running for the lead (and in last).

Matthew ended up with a one-point win over Kyle, who looked to be the leader the entire game.

Monopoly Express

Last Month Played: 4/10

We haven't played in a long time so Mike broke this out and we gave it a spin. The dice hated me and love Mike and Hilary, until the end. My last turn, the only chance I had was if I got a hotel. I rolled the prerequisite four houses, and had the one in six chance at a hotel, but failed. It's as close as I have seen anyone get to a hotel in game.

Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 2/08

This was a four-player game and I was the only one who had played before. That didn't help. Kyle won and Greg was close to winning at that point.

Nightfall: Coldest War
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 5/12

Expansion Played: Blood Country in all of the games.

A couple of games with Mike. I'm sure I would have played this more during June if the Quarriors expansion hadn't been released.

Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 7/11

Michael, Ben, and I played this. Like a lot of the games, this was new to Ben. I don't know if Michael had played before, but I figured I would do better than I did. They ended up being close when the final scores were tallied and I was way behind them.

Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 1/11

Wow. As much as I have played this, I was surprised to learn that with three players you deal a dummy hand and leave it out of the round. We either never did this in the past or my memory is even worse than I ever thought it was!

Power Grid: First Sparks
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 5/12

Four players. It was Ian's first game, though he has played Power Grid and Greg number 3 won. I am now the owner of a losing streak in this game and probably should have retired when I was undefeated.

Times Played: 18
Last Month Played: 5/12

Expansions Played: Rise of the Demons & Quarmageddon for all games.

We came, we saw, we quar-nquered! A lot.

Ra: The Dice Game
Times Played: 5
Last Month Played: 5/12

After the first time we played, I was going to say, quoting last month, "We played. Mike won. What else did you expect?" Then something odd happened. We tied. Mike wanted to play again immediately, and I won. Maybe the world is ending this year?

Later in the month we split a couple of games.

Small World
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 5/11

Expansions Played: Cursed!, the Grand Dames of Small World and Be Not Afraid....

Beginning next month I will stop recording plays of this game's expansions and will assume that all my plays of it include these three expansions.

This was a three-player game with Michael and John. I don't think we had any really appealing race/ability combos the entire game so all three of us had to make due with what was available. I had both a Stout and a Spirit race and ended up losing to John by one measly point. Stupid game.

Snow Tails
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 5/12

A five player race.

I set up the course since Michael wasn't one of the players. It was a fairly standard hairpin course with two of the slanted curves on each side. I had the cards to get off to a fairly decent lead through the forest tile and managed to stay a tile in front of everyone else through the race, playing cautiously the whole game. Rob made a mad charge at the end and might have passed me at the end if he didn't end up in the same lane as I did for the mad dash to the finish line.

Speicherstadt, The
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 4/11

This is a good game when you know there are other players coming soon because it is quick, but it also requires some thought and money management.

Tanto Cuore
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 3/11

Expansion Played: Expanding the House

Two games with Kyle and Amelia. I did not bring Romantic Vacation along because I am going to be selling my copy.

Thunderstone Advance: Towers of Ruin
Times Played: 3
Last Month Played: 5/12

The first playing was a long and tough game. The second and third games had a better mix of cards and played much smoother, but we agreed that this needs to be expanded, badly!

Ticket to Ride: Asia
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 3/12

We played the team game again, this time with three teams. It was Amelia and I against Michael and Rick with Matthew and Nico forming the last team.

Rick kept drawing tickets and misunderstood that the game ended when the combined team had four or fewer trains left. It didn't end up hurting them, though, as they ended up with the win with M&N finishing second and my team solidly in last place.

Ticket to Ride: The Card Game
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 9/09

Another game that hasn't been played in a long, long time. We played with three players and I was too aggressive grabbing tickets, forgetting how quick the game is with three.

I prefer playing with two or four players. With two you get a little more time to work on your tickets and with four, you go through the deck twice and score your tickets half way through, so you know what you need to do the second half of the game.

Würfel Bohnanza
Times Played: 8
Last Month Played: 5/12

Hilary's game of choice these days, so it often gets played at Mike's, and the Saturday crowd likes it, too.
