I never really been one for game rankings. I buy games based on the themes and mechanics I like, not how highly ranked they are. I only own nine games in the top one hundred. That out of a collection of a hundred games.
My highest ranked game is The Castles of Burgundy at 15. I love this game. It’s so elegant. I didn’t buy it for the longest time as the art is so drab. I like how you can build a strategy around one of the knowledge tiles. This is one of my most played games.
The next game I own is Concordia. This is my most recent purchase. I bought it because I found it cheap in Amazon and it has been recommended so many times. Whist it is OK I doubt whether I will keep it in the longer term although I am waiting for the solo option to be released before I make that decision. Sometimes my favourite games take a while to grow on me. I didn’t really appreciate The Castles of Burgundy until I have played it a few times.
The third game is Wingspan at twenty. What can I say? I have written about this game at length. It’s a great game and my most played and most blinged out. It’s not without it faults. But it deserves it place in the top twenty. It’s already sold over 700,000 copies. Which is amazing.
My next game is Viticulture Essential Edition. Again this was a slow burner for me. I’ve only played it a few times but it is growing on me. I own the meeplesource upgraded workers and I am tempted by the Meeplesource wine bottles. I’ve got to say I was a little disappointed by this game when I first got it but it’s nice to have a game in my collection that plays well at higher player counts.
Caverna: The Cave Farmers is next up at thirty. I much prefer Agricola which I sold as I struggled to get it to the table. My family found the feeding too onerous. Caverna’s a better game for newbies but it’s not very interesting solo.
I still regularly play Agricola on the app. I expect I will reacquire it at some point. The Agricola start player pawn was my suggestion for an upgrade in the recent Meeplesource upgrade Kickstarter. I wish this would come to Yucata as the problem with both Caverna and Agricola is the upkeep each round. But Agricola should be in the top twenty. Indeed Agricola appears twice in the top one hundred at 32 and 74. I wonder what it would be if they were combined?
I used to own the revised addition but I much prefer the decks of the first edition.
Next is Everdell at 31 which is a fantastic game and in my top ten. I’ve played this a few times solo and multiplayer. It’s a fairly recent purchase bought towards the end of the first lockdown. I love the art and recently backed the newest expansions on Kickstarter.
I then have a big gap to Clans of Caledonia at 46. I still not sure about this and might let it go. It’s always okay but it outstays it’s well as is a bit, um boring.
I then have another big gap to Keyflower at 75. It’s a complete crime this game is 75. When I bought it was forty. This game has it all. It scales well. It has a decent amount of player interaction and you can get a bit of an engine going. This should be top twenty. I suppose at some point they will do a deluxe edition with all the promos.
At 78 is Architects of the West Kingdom. This is a well designed smooth game. But somehow I never really want to play it and I am not sure why. It has a good solo option. I love the victory point track. I need to play this dome more. I am on the fence about the rest of the West Kingdom trilogy.
There are a couple of games that I am really shocked are not in the top one hundred. Istanbul is the most noticeable absentee. This used to be just within the top one hundred. I loved this game from the first play and it’s what I call a bomb proof game. Always plays well.
The Isle of Cats is another game that should be in the top one hundred and indeed looks like it’s heading that way. Card drafting and tile laying is such a good combination.
I have three games that I used to own which are in the top one hundred. Firstly Five Tribes. I quite like this but I find it a bit of brain burner. I never seem to be able to plan ahead in this game. I play by assessing what are the available moves on my turn and just working out the best move at the time.
I also used to own Power Grid. I quite like it. It features auctions and market places which I like. But again it wasn’t getting played so it had to go. I sort of regret it now. I love the sort of retro vibe it has.
I used to own Terraforming Mars. I got rid of it firstly because so many other people own it. Secondly it’s so fiddly and someone always sends their cubes playing. But mostly I got rid of it I was so tired of it. You would have to do a lot of persuading to get me to play this again.
There are two or three games on my wish list that are in the top one hundred. Grand Austria Hotel and Lorenzo il Magnifico Both of these are awesome. Also I am really enjoying Underwater Cities.
