I had a really fun solo play of Legendary Encounters: An Alien Deck Building Game yesterday afternoon while KT was busy doing her thing, after I had spent a while chasing my tail trying to decide what to play or what deserved to be played or some such nonsense and then realising that the box for this was right in front of me and that the rules were still fresh in my mind after a recent solo win. I decided to play through Aliens once again, and although I really did fancy a full-on four character experience I knew that I would be able to keep track of things much more easily if I were just to run the two.

The unfortunate pair (you can guess how this is going to end) were the Commander and Priest. The former can recruit extra characters on his turn while the latter is a lover not a fighter and can use attack points or whatever they are called to recruit people to the cause. Just watch Alien3 again to see how far that approach gets you with a xenomorph.

Things began fairly smoothly, although I did make things a little easier for myself by misreading one of the cards, and before long we had found the colonists and realised that something very nasty indeed was afoot. Progressing further into the complex the Commander went to scan one of the rooms and was leapt upon by a facehugger. He had spent his last attack points scanning that particular room, which was distinctly unwise in retrospect, and with the Priest having decided to go easy on the whole violence thing it did not look good.

Before too long the Commander was harbouring a chestburster, but at least it meant that he was being ignored by the xenomorphs, aware that he was carrying one of their own, and before too long it was off and scampering away, leaving my Priest to try to take on the rest of the adventure on his own. It needs to be pointed out that he had been hoping to rely on the Commander to clear the way, so while he did manage to get the machine guns placed and firing, rescuing Newt along the way, eventually he was overpowered, singing Loving The Alien as he went to his doom.

I must admit that I am quite emotionally invested in this game, as the early films especially were so much a part of my young adulthood, to the extent that one of my recurring nightmares for many decades has been being trapped alone on the Nostromo. I have the various nerdy T-shirts, the books and the rest, and this iteration of Legendary is right up my street. You will have heard this before about many of the games in my collection, but, again, I really should play this more often.
