Partially because all that bending over the map can be a little heavy on the neck and partially because we want to eke out the last enjoyment as much as possible we played just the one more case of MicroMacro: Crime City the other evening, trying to find out what happened to a certain chap who had gone missing on his afternoon stroll. The is one of the two cases in the box which is marked with a difficulty of five stars (out of five) so we were confident that it would give us a gaming fix for maybe twenty minutes or so.

And so it proved, perhaps even for longer than twenty minutes, though we were so involved in the case that we did not really track the time espeically as we were playing the version without the hints on the cards, which we have found much more enjoyable. We did, however, find out what our chap had been up to, and also what had happened to him and why. It was another satisfying case, and the tiny yet revealing details in the map were again a source of joy.

KT is resolute that we will buy any new episode in the series as soon as it comes out, and is even talking about creating our own cases for each other based on the map that we own. I think that would be tricky, but I would not put it past her.

I wonder if MicroMacro marks the entry into the market of a new type of game, which places all the information in front of you in this manner and then asks you to work out the wheres, whys, whos and whens. Quite apart from the pleasure it offers in and of itself there is also that reassuring retreat into childhood, for which of us of whatever vintage has not at some point lost ourselves in one of those beautfiully illustrated books for younger readers?

So MicroMarco is not Agricola or Race for the Galaxy or Tigris & Euphrates but it feels fresh and new and fun, and, most importantly of all, it seems to provide an easy way to get people around the table and playing together. For me that represents a win for any design, so both KT and I are looking forward to more and holding on to our copy for when we eventually have guests around.

MicroMacro seems to draw curious players in.

Happy gaming!
