I have been playing a bit of Onirim (Second Edition) of late in those gaps in the day when I might otherwise be doing not very much at all, those gaps being defined at the moment as the time between waking up and going to sleep. Things will change at some point, but for now it is just a case of ticking over from day to day.
I did manage a winning run of four games with The Book Of Steps, which made me feel a little better about my ability to play this game, not least becuase I contrived to get in some clever cardery along the way. For the first time in a long while I sacrificed one of my discovered doors to deal with a nightmare, and that allowed me to turn swiftly around and win the game, which was deeply satisfying.
I had forgottem all about that option until I found myself backed into a corner and retreated to the rules to seek extra help, and there it was. Not only did it win me the game but it also served as a timely reminder to keep going back to the rule books of games that I think I know inside out, just to check that there is nothing there I have forgotten about.
The worst misread of a set of rules that has made its way into our play was in the first hundred or so games of Dominion, when I somehow got it into my head that a player's action included must buy a card rather than may buy a card. I always make a point of returning to a rule book after the initial plays of a game, but clearly I need to do so at regular intervals once said design has bedded in as well.
I would love to get my victory rate against The Book Of Steps up to 50%, which might just be possible if I go on another winning streak, though there is no doubt that a run of cards and doors that do not match up can scupper things early in the game. The immediate goal is to keep playing and keep getting games to the table, however quick and small, in order to maintain some sense of normailty as this stretch of time plays itself out.
Happy gaming!
