Today I was writing a review for My Farm Shop and I was thinking about the art. I find it quite uninspiring and I think it will really hold the game back.
Whilst I realise art is a very subjective, for me it’s really important. I love playing with games that I think have great art and components. It really adds to my experience.
Another game I feel that the art doesn’t do justice to is Miyabi. This is such a clever tile overbuilding game by Michael Kiesling but it just could have been so much better. Of course art isn’t everything and Miyabi will stay in my collection due to its great gameplay.
Sometimes the art on a game is so bad it interferes with the playing of the game. This was certainly the case with the first edition of Carpe Diem. I am sure there was another way to represent the Roman villas and buildings.
In general I think board game art is fantastic. It’s a bit like album sleeve art in that it can really enhance the end product. There are some games when I find myself admiring the art and noticing new details whilst I play. For example I do this in Era of Kingdoms or Keyflower.
I think the art in Terraforming Mars is awful. Whilst the box cover is fine, the art on the cards feels disjointed and inconsistent.
The poster child for uninspiring artwork is surely The Castles of Burgundy. Indeed the art put me off owning it for ages. But clearly this hadn’t put off people wanting to play this game or indeed Terraforming Mars. The art in the new edition of The Castles of Burgundy isn’t much better.
I really dislike the box art of Santa Maria, in particular the Conquistador on the front. But the worst thing about it is the bubble gum pink smiley victory point tokens. I really like the game but feel slightly embarrassed pulling it out of my bag and suggesting we play it.
I am looking forward to Castles of Mad King Ludwig: Collector's Edition The art has been completely redone and looks fantastic. I think the cover art on the old edition was fantastic but the art on the components not so.
Tiles from the new edition
It’s getting the same treatment as Suburbia which was always a bit dull.
