We're spending Christmas with my fiancé's family this year. Well, actually only the Christmas Eve, but that's the day we open the presents here in Finland. My sister-in-law is hosting the dinner this year and she has asked us to bring some games to play after we've eaten. We had to put our thinking caps on, because we didn't have that many games that we could bring. We usually play Dixit or Diamant with them because they really aren't gamers. And my other sister-in-law is mentally disabled, so we don't want her to feel left out.
We bought Say Anything and Wits & Wagers to fill the party game insufficiency in our collection. And I really didn't know there were Finnish editions of them both, so that was a nice surprise. I think those paired with Dixit will get us through the evening nicely. I might even bring Compatibility to the table, because I think it would fit quite well with those other games.
We also got Ghost Blitz as a gift for my niece and my disabled sister-in-law. We're that annoying couple who only buy games as presents
And OK, we did buy something just for us. We had this discount coupon to a store that has a small assortment of games. The store has a lot of other stuff aswell, but nothing we needed at that point. Most of the games they had, were games we already owned, like TTR, Carcassonne and stuff. We ended up getting Paris Connection, just because it won the Finnish Game of the Year -title. I didn't know much of it before, but it looked interesting enough. I'm glad to say I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. The game has like 2 rules, so I didn't expect much from it, but simple is good. It kind of reminded me of Through the Desert. So much to do in so little time. And boy, it's annoying when other players mess up your plans
As an impulse buy, my fiancé got us Timeline when he saw it on sale somewhere. It proved to be an instant hit with my family, so no regrets there. I think I have never played so many party games in my life, as I have these past two weeks. But we did have two game nights with "proper" games, so my brains have had their dose of burning this month. And November is not over yet!
Out of the games I've played this month, I think Airlines Europe has been my favourite. I just love it. I even forced my 16 years old niece to play it with us, and though she tends to prefer games with fantasy themes I think she enjoyed AE. I'm so glad we bought it and I'm sure it will never leave our collection.
Ooh, and one last thing! I got a gift certificate to a FLGS as a birthday present, and I'm very eager to use it, but to what game?!
Games I'm considering:
* Defenders of the Realm. Pandemic but with a fantasy theme. Drool.
* Railways of the World. I was kind of hoping my fiance would have gotten this to me as a BD present, but instead I got the Song of Ice and Fire books from him. Not complaining though
* Castle Panic + the expansion. I think this would be fun to play with family or with some of our friends who like co-ops more than competitive games.
* Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game. I love BG.
* A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition). My only concern with AGoT is that everybody says that you have to play with 6, and I would very very rarely get 6 people to play 3-4 hours with me. I need new friends.
So, if you have anything to say about those games and possibly help me choose, that would be well appreciated.
