The Big Board

Photo Essays, fun video of historic engagements, badly written narrative concerning those conflicts, its all here. The idea here guys is I want to record my experiences as we journey through the history of mans conflicts. We might learn something. Or we might just have precious time in the Man Cave.

Well I had a great time last year. I did not end up posting here as much as I desired. Hopefully I can sort an easy way to pop content here that does not require a huge replication of effort. So what happened in 2012?

I played 50 new games or so, got in over 150+ sessions, with a lot of Face to Face play also. I played loads of LNL, let loose with GBoH in an epic Pompey v Caesar exploration, trundled around in Tanks in WaW and explored Sekigahara as a Feudal Lord and Banzai charged Guadalcanal in CC: P & Bloody Ridge!

A highlight for me was experiencing OCS, with Guderian's Blitzkrieg , Burma and TBL (TWICE!!), I also played A Victory Lost one of the first IGS games, which gave me an idea for a new series of posts about games. Playing Phantom Fury & Space Infantry made me appreciate solo games! The SCS system allowed me to explore my level of interest in a number of topics ranging from Battle of the Bulge to Yom Kippur.

I think I acquired nearly every game I have on the "Holy Grail " list. All of the OCS titles, including EATG and Hubes Pocket, a Trial of Strength, White Death, WtiD, Panzergruppe Guderian, Blocks in the East, Ware in Europe & WWI expansion, FC:Alexander, some of the Central Front Titles from S&T, the EFS series from GMT and some others. Too many in fact. So no buying [barring preorders] in 2013.

The Best part of F2F was the ability to do Side By Side plays!!

When I capture my personal play it is always hard to write about the feel or the mood or the different options. My 3 friends however who play with me on occasion have made a huge impact on my gaming. By grabbing 2 copies of the same game we can see different situations unfold. Last year we did a swag of SCS games. As well as No Retreat. As the year progressed we tried more games in teams of two - Operation Typhoon, Tide of Iron, Cobra and the like.

On the blog at The Big Board over 780 posts of game images, AARs and video went up. Last year I took over 4,000 pictures for stop motion video and making AARS. Lots of fun.

I'll take donations of spare network attachable Hard Drives ANY time!!

The most rewarding aspect was being able to learn new games. This would not have happened with out the encouragement and support of people on CSW and BGG who actively sought me out to ask "what is next", "gee that helped", or "Darn please do more of that!". While I dont play as much as I like, nor am I as productive as I want to be, the encouragement and engagement of new people was a reward that I had not considered! The whole 'bigboard' experience has morphed, and changed. I'm not sure where that will lead. The BigBoard also expanded the number of people who contribute either image, AARs and or Video, so its less of a 1 person effort.

I shan't be posting everything I do here, but all of my images and AARs will find their way to my personal blog listed above. It has become too hard to use Facebook as a storage medium (free) for images, up keep a blog(s) on forums and do the videos and the BigBoard. I'll try to post links as often as possible here in '13.

This year will be focused on some larger games, a possible deep dive on OCS Sicily ( I found a superb Italian/English book with 100's of images and superb details to share).
For a large game I am assessing DAKII and Case Blue as well as WWIII, the combined Central Front Series or similar. Right now I am leaning towards DAKII at the moment. I am not sure why I want to do that solo.... but it beckons to me!

This year is the year of divestment! In particular OCS titles that include Sicily/Korea/Tunisia/and Case blue, all are un punched! I now have punched copies of each and want to get rid of the dupes, so look for an Auction or similar later in the year.

At the strategic level a local friend wants to play Trial of Strength! Super! hopefully that will happen in the first Quarter. A VASSAL buddy is playing AVD with me, which will allow me to finish the Side By Side battle comparison of titles: AVD and PanzerGruppe Guderian, then onto anther interesting pair of battle with similar design but different implementations.

This year there is hope in writing some narrative elements in a simple format based upon plays of Ambush, RAF, Where there is Discord and some other solo titles.

Tactical stuff will of course include Lock'n Load and World at War and possible a TCS title if I can bear to re engage with LOS in that game.
I started a Rise of Macedon Campaign that links all the battles following Phillip II road to Hegemony, loss and new recruits carry over in battles, it is really challenging how that changes your play!

The year will kick off with It Never Snows 4 guys Face to Face, and a Lock n Load tournament in Seattle Feb 7th!!!
What better way to get rolling?!!
