We'll be back with news and videos later this week as we start to hear things coming out of Essen and releases start hitting. For now, I wanted to share something that has been on my mind over the past week.

This cycle, I decided to go from an iPhone 6 to an iPhone 7 Plus. This is my first experience with a "giant" phone, and I was nervous on the outset. I was not afraid of it exploding like some phones (*wink*) but I was really concerned about the size with kids and my daily lifestyle. (Note: I am not anti-Android at all, iOS is just the ecosystem that makes the most since between work and personal needs)

What tipped me over the edge was the new camera, but it ended up having an unexpected benefit. While my iPad used to be my chief gaming platform, the expanded screen size of the iPhone plus has made it a great place to game.

The new phone has made playing board game ports like Paperback, Ascension, and other much easier. The screen size is big enough to replace the iPad for single player board gaming in many cases. It makes many board game ports more viable than ever before.

This larger phone has also breathed new life into some old favorites. Namely: Magic Duels, Hearthstone, and Pathfinder Adventures.

Video Game: Magic Duels

Magic Duels has that terrible burdensome UI that it has always had, but while the normal version was near unplayable, the larger screen makes things much more bearable. I’ve been having a Magic itch recently, and it was great to play through some samples of recent sets. The iPhone Plus really makes this a more portable experience.

Video Game: Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft

Hearthstone has been a mainstay on my iPad for many years. The iPhone version is excellent and the Plus just gives it more of that sit back experience. I feel like I am getting a great UI without having to pull out the iPad. It’s really helped me get back into the Tavern Brawls and the recent single player campaign release.

Video Game: Pathfinder Adventures

Lastly, Pathfinder Adventures is excellent on a Plus phone. With this new real estate, I’ve been able to dive into adventures much more quickly on the go. I really think this one is a big win.

The iPhone Plus has really opened up iPhone gaming me. It’s been harder and harder to justify it recently and this helping me fall in love all over again. I am not suggesting everyone go buy a giant phone, but if you have been looking for a more gaming focused phone, I think the larger screens are really where it is at.
