As I mentioned before when we played some of the games we won last year, the local convention IndyCon excels at game giveaways. This year Toc Toc Woodman was the game that my wife won. She claims she won it to play with our son, but I do not buy that is the main reason she wanted it. So how good is this game?
The goal of Toc Toc Woodman is to knock bark off of a tree. Before the game the tree is set up by putting four bark pieces on core pieces and then stacking the cores on top of the tree stump. Players use a little ax to hack at the tree. Each player gets two thwacks. Each piece of bark they knock off is worth one point, but each core piece the knock off is -5 points. The game is played until all of the bark is knocked off (or more likely the whole tree topples). Who ever scores the most points wins.
The Game We Played
My wife and I played a three player game with my wife's mom. It did not take long for the tree to get very crooked. I did my best to not knock off core pieces, but a couple of times I hit too hard. My wife had the perfect touch, and she did not knock off a single core piece and multiple times she got more than one piece of bark off with one hit. My wife's mom on the other hand struggled and she ended up with most of the core pieces. She ended with -7 points. I had 9 nine point, and my wife won with 18 points.
My Rating: 4 (Like it)
My Thoughts: This game is just a lot of fun to play. I like that, unlike Jenga, there is only one winner. That makes the game really feel more skill based.

Her Thoughts: This game is quick, fun, and a lot better than Jenga. Eventually it will make a great family game.
Combined Rating: 8
Toc Toc Woodman is one of our favorite games, because it is fun to play. My wife is right this will make a fun family game, but the game is so simple and so flawless in its execution that it is a fun game for everyone.
