Mission Red Planet - First Impressions
We played 2 games of Mission: Red Planet by Bruno Faidutti last night. Nathan had won it in a math trade and been keen to play it. Since we were short a few players for the 7 player Cosmic Encounter game we had planned, we decided to give Mission Red Planet a go.
We played 2 three player games and had a blast. It plays quickly, has a simple and intuitive mechanic of role selection mixed with area control and has a good mix of hidden chaos to keep it different every time you play. Players choose roles each turn to fill spaceships with astronauts who then travel to different sections of the surface of Mars. At the end of the 5th, 8th and 10th turns, players who have the most astronauts in each territory are rewarded with 1, 2 or 3 resource tiles. There are three different resources up for grabs, worth 1, 2 or 3 victory points. The payer with the most 1 point resource tiles (Ice) earn an additional 9 points at the end of the game, so there is an incentive to go for them despite the lower point value. Each player starts the game with a secret objective that will earn the player additional victory points if accomplished. The game can be backstabby and chaotic, but there are enough decisions to be made that you feel that you have some control. Great fun for people who enjoy Citadels, Isla Dorada and Alien Frontiers.
