The acronym XTG3 stands for "eXpandable Tabletop Game". The purpose of this family designation is to allow customers to clearly identify games that have been designed to allow for expansion using two (2) possible methods (currently):
1. "Core" Set + Expansions
2. Collections done in sets
Aside from these two (2) methods, the terminology refers to "Tabletop Games" which is meant to include both Card and Board Games. Other copyrighted family designations such a "Living Card Game" (LCG) are firstly copyrighted and secondly deal only with Card Games and follow restrictive licensing rules.
XTG3 is therefore:
1. An open designation and not copyrighted
2. Provides logos to help identify XTG3 products
3. Conforms to a EULA license with 3 levels
4. More open since it is geared towards all "Tabletop Games"
The primary focus of this family designation is to allow for Tabletop Games to be identified by customers as "designed for expansion". This means that the designer wanted from Day 1 to allow for his game to be expandable according to one (1) the 3 levels of licensing:
Level 1 (Closed Licensing): The product will be expanded by the original designer and/or his publisher.
Level 2 (Partial Licensing): Both the original designer and/or his publisher are open to submission of new and exciting expansion ideas. As such other designers may submit their ideas to the designated source for reviewing any/all expansion ideas.
Level 3 (Open Licensing): Both the original designer and/or his publisher will make available templates, guides and other material to allow anyone interested in designing more expansions to do so at their leisure.
The 3 level EULA allows for some protection against things like "defamatory" content or grants permission to use logos in the proper context and even use a Tabletop Game's Branding. It can also serve as a way to "prevent" some usage, if not desired. For example to ensure no nudity or sexual content from general games geared at a Family audience (for example). Or to enforce rules regarding too violent/graphic illustrations (another example).
Each product using the XTG3 Licensing (and belonging to this family) will have a XTG3 Logo signifying that the game was designed for "Expansion". This means that a "core" product will be designed and that "core" will allow for expansion. Each "Expansion" product will also have a distinct logo to distinguish itself from the original "core" product. More than one "core" product may be used with various "Expansions" according to the compatibility establish by each product.
