A mild day weather wise. The Mazurka slice that we had brought along did not survive the day, most seemed to enjoy it. It came from the Cookie Barrel if anyone's interested. There was a fair old turn out with numbers seeming to peak in the afternoon, not so many people to begin with. We started out with a very light game but soon made up for it with two solid medium/heavy Euros. The Small World players enjoyed the more substantial Vinci upon which it is based, and we have been asked to bring it in again.

To most people's horror we had three games of this, or was it four? Anyway, Warren won most of them, and I won one.

Be sure to wear blue, carry a banana and it also helps to be female.

I had won this little gem at the December meet and only been able to play it once, since. We hadn't played the 5 player version which gives an additional sale of oil to the company of the player's choice.

I think Rob won, but it was a very close spread of points.

This game has elements of El Grande, Taj Mahal and Tobago. The necessity of keeping your train (to transport your oil to the oil companies) ahead of your derricks is an interesting mechanic.

I think most players enjoyed it, especially Priya's cheer squad until they got called off to another game.

This is the game upon which Small World is based and I thought we'd bring it and let the Small World players see how it compared.

The differences in the rules were explained quickly and as quickly understood. I trailed by about 10 points for most of the game but made up a decent amount of pointage. Still last place though.

I think Rob won? It was a close thing though. With Vinci the 6 player game ends when 100 points are reached, and when the turn finishes for everyone, it's most past the post. So at the end there was a lot of frantic calculation to try and get past Rob's score.

It was a good, solid game.

Photos of the final scores will be up shortly. Now, who was playing? Me, Rob, ariaflame (Elaine), Renato, Craig and mezzomaniac I think?

Played this again for the second WABA in a row. Ian is very happy to have found people who like the game to play with him.

I did like it better on this second play, as it made more sense. We three were all pretty close in score, but Jess won followed by Ian and me in last place.

Then we three learned Ian's new copy of Eminent Domain. We all liked it a lot. It takes elements of RftG and Domain and makes a game that feels like its own thing.

It is easier to learn than RftG too. Though we did make one major mistake that wasn't picked up until pretty much the end.

I think I would like a copy of this now. And am keen to play again.

I won, not sure of the places after that.

Tegan arrived partway through ED and waited patiently for us to finish up. Not being a fan of RftG, I'm not sure if she minded missing the first games.

We brought our copy of Merkator along. We are big fans of Uwe Rosenberg, and even though this game is less popular we like it a lot.

It had been a little while since we broke it out, so I did have to work through the rulebook a little, but it's pretty light for a Rosenberg big box game. In fact, I feel like it's closer to Bohnanza than any of the harvest games. Rules for the sake of rules rather than any thematic sense.

And it's the ultimate example of a cube-pusher.

I think the other enjoyed the game too. I believe Jess won?

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was looking for a new leader after the death of comrade Aparatschnik.

General's Steve, Mark, Warren, Maggie, Scott and Myself vied to influence the politburo with a few major themes emerging:

The rise of Ludmilla Patina
Originally the head of the KGB under the old guard, she resisted attempted purges and various investigations. Eventually moved to the Foreign Minister under Leader Nikotin, she survived through much change and eventually rose to be leader of the party. As an octogenarian, she did not last long and was laid to rest amongst other devoted leaders of the party (around turn 8)

The Great Purge
Under leader Nikotin, KGB head Krakemheads and the foreign minister Nogoodnik, the KGB and Foreign minister purged a few 2nd level ministers and the entire candidate pool to Siberia. At the end very few people were left to fill the void of the candidates let a lone the politburo! (All under the influence of the Trotskyites, i.e. Me)

The rise and fall of Turi Nikotin, and rise
Turi Nikotin became leader half way through the era and waved well as leader. After losing Krakemheads and Nogoodnik to poor health, he was under investigation by the new Defense Minister and was eventually voted out in a "rigged" trial and sent to Siberia. Despite this, and due to his great purge earlier, he later rose again through the ranks to end the game as leader of the KGB. What a story!

In the end, Mark technically won as he controlled the final leader, the young Victor Wasolin - (although we were meant to play another half round after that )

All in all lots of fun and chaos with the great purge (which also technically shouldn't have happened ...)

Preliminary to Kremlin () Stephen, Warren, Eric and myself vied for control of the city. Eric created a money making machine but wasn't able to claw back enough points in the end to stop Stephen who won with several buildings, and a few aristocrats.

Great playing by all.

A five player game between David, Stephen, Eric, Warren and myself.

After some tactical play, I delivered a victory with 5 territories through a lucky last hand versus Eric.

The Hard Luck award went to David who battled valiantly for most territories but didn't end up with a single one.

The Deluxe edition, Warren vs Eric vs Mark vs Me. Like a random tactical game of chess (well, not really) I managed 2 wins after securing 2 islands all to myself.

Warren seemed to be set adrift on his own floats a couple of times ...

Had a game of this with Roger, David, Bernad, Stephen and me. David was the only person who've played it once a year ago. This make for a particularly murdy game during the old kingdom time as we were all trying to figure out what to do.

When the new kingdom came along however we all got a good idea of how the game played and it progress a lot better.

A definite fun game.

Brought this out for a quick play after amun-re.

I was the catacomb lord while Roger Bernard were brave heroes joined later by Joe. The flicking aspect with dungeon crawling makes this a really fun game. Definitely one of my hot game at the moment.

First time player in a six player game of this. I loved it! Had to leave the game early due to Vinci starting up, but this is a perfect game for tag team playing.

Can't wait to try this after a dinner party.

Saw this played across the way from us. It looked very impressive.

The players said that the counter supplied for flicking didn't work to well, so the owner had got glass beads in each colour for each player and they were using them.

They apparently worked a treat.
