I love my wife... I love her more than ever. I've finally turned her into a game-geek. It was long and arduous journey for both of us but she's finally come around. Bear in mind that she is not the depraved kind of game-geek like me, spending every free minute on BGG and constantly scouring the web for that 'must-have' title; but a geek nonetheless... she can certainly appreciate a good Alea Large-Box Bookshelf game if you know what I mean.

As this list seems to suggest though, she wasn't always a geek. Indeed quite the contrary. This list is a homage to her journey into geekhood. Merely citing the major milestones along way and how each of these has affected her attitude towards gaming (rated by '+' and '-').

First, a short history of my wife's exposure to board games (not including Monopoly) prior to meeting me.

To this day, Clue and Dominoes are some of her favorite games... and the only ones she'd play before meeting me. Fortunately, I've been able to knock them down a few notches on her top 10.

Being that this game is considered to be 'the gateway game' and Settlers did, in fact introduce me to Euro-gaming, I thought that this would be a good start. She didn't get into it though and her progress got off to a rocky start.

Thank heavens for Meeples! Carcassonne was the beginning for her. It made her feel like she was putting together a puzzle rather than playing a "stupid" board game. It convinced her that all boardgames weren't "boring" and opened the door for what was to follow.

After several failed attempts, she still only ever wanted to play Carcassonne. I was beginning to think that all hope was lost. Until we found this gem. Finally, I had found an actual "board game" that she enjoyed. TTR has now replaced Settlers of Catan as my "gateway-game" of choice!

Who would have thought that a humble colony could challenge the might of cities, roads, farms, and cloisters? San Juan turned out to be the miracle game that I had been looking for that would convince my wife to start trying more serious games. And as an added bonus, this game sparked a sense of competitiveness in my spouse. From this point on, she believed she could win and to this day, SJ is still her favorite game.

The success of San Juan led me to seek out similiar games. Lost Cities was another hit.
In fact, this was such a hit that I was able to introduce it to my sister (pictured here) over the holidays and turn her into a semi-gamer.

Most Knizia games (with the exception of Lost Cities) don't go over well with my wife... even Carcassonne: the Castle (she hated it). However, Palazzo was a hit!

She was finally ready for the real deal. This would prove to be the moment of truth, wherein she'd become a gamer or alternatively, my progress with her would come to a screeching stand-still. On one side, I had San Juan igniting a curiousity about its godfather: Puerto Rico; on the other side, she had seen me play it with my friends before she ever began playing games and had to listen to me drone on about it all the time. I had to take the risk though... I had to know if she had it in her.
Success!!! At first, it was merely "okay." But that was a good sign. After a few more plays, she loved Puerto Rico (it's now a favorite of hers). This was the turning point; her geekiness (and a happy ending) was assured.

Not everything was to be roses (or rather indigo) though. Being a huge fan of Louis XIV, I encouraged my wife to play it. She hated it only slightly less than Traders of Genoa. At this point, I figured she just had something personal against Rudiger Dorn (who knows? maybe they used to know one another).

I think that by this point she had played too many great games to tolerate some of the poor production design decisions of Metro (all of the grey tiles, horrible scoring track, etc.). Strike two!

Fun Fact: that's the star of this geeklist herself (my wife) pictured here, devasted after having the Cathedral played on her during the last turn of Caylus... she still hasn't forgiven me.

Another monumentous occasion happened last night when she enthusiastically agreed to try Byzantium. To think, my wife playing, and actually enjoying a Martin Wallace game! Our first game ended prematurely when I conquered Constantinople and stole a victory from her. Infuriated, she demanded a rematch. I let her stay ahead of me until the final turn when my armies rained havoc down on all of her cities. By the time she realized she could end the devastation by simply passing, it was too late. Despite being pissed, she took it in good stride.
Her geekification was complete.

Hearing me and my friends groan about how difficult it is to manage our resources in this game calls out a challenge to my wife. Whereas depth used to steer her away from games, it is now an invitation. I think we're probably best starting off with Railroad Tycoon though (something I wish I had had the luxury of playing before AoS). But oh! What a glorious day it will be when my wife becomes a Martin Wallace junkie!
