This weekend marked the fifth year for IndyCon, my favorite gaming event of the year. I've been there from the very first year and hope to attend for many more years to come. I can't think of too many things that I enjoy more than three straight days of gaming with the best group of gamers I've ever met. Things were a little different this year with the responsibilities of fatherhood making me scale back my usual gaming marathon frenzy. I tried to have a more relaxed approach to the weekend and so didn't get as many games played as in previous years and only learned 7 new games. I still had a blast and got to met a bunch of new people that I hope to play more games with in the future.

I had a couple friends from outside of our gaming group come to the Con and they enjoyed it immensely. Thanks to everyone for making them feel welcome. Many thanks as well to Dave, Tami, Adam, and everyone else responsible for making IndyCon happen every year. You guys are awesome!

After arriving at the Con around 11 I saw Emily & Bob finishing up a game so I went over to see if they wanted to play something. The last few years I've gotten to play at least a couple of games with Emily & Bob and its always good fun. Ross was wandering around as well and suggested Steam since he knew that I wanted to try it out (and convince me that it was better than RRT). After teaching us how to play, Ross promptly got of to a solid lead and kept his position ahead of us throughout the game. The other three of us (Emily, Bob, and me) agreed that we were playing for second and had a tight finish.

I did enjoy this game and would like to play again before I make any final judgements. My gut reaction is that I prefer RRT because it has more emphasis on building and has more flexibility to do whatever you want without having to pre-plan. There are a number of things from Steam that I really enjoyed that aren't in RRT such as the player order bidding mechanic and the defined cube supply for populating cities. There was a copy of this available in the raffle but I decided against going for it because I'd like to get more plays in before I know whether it's worth owning both this and RRT. Any opinions from train delivery fans?

While we were looking for our next game, Jeff suggested this and we played with the same group from our Steam game (plus Jeff). Ross took the tile stacks away from me for flipping the tiles while the current player was finishing their placement in an attempt to speed up the game. He then vowed to never play a game with me again, we'll see if he can make good on that. He's pretty much guaranteed himself my vote for the "Mortal Enemy" award for 13th Tribe this year.

Bob spent a lot of the game making big jumps and then wondering why there was so much time between his turns. Ross sold tons of goods to the market and had somewhere around 18 coins at one point. I grabbed the end game scoring castles for green and yellow tiles and managed to score 8/5/5 points from majorities after the third round.

I've enjoyed Glen More every time I play it but am not sure whether it's a game that I want to own. I'm pretty sure that I'd be happy to pick it up in a trade so maybe 2 or 3 years from now when the newness wears off and it shows up in the IndyCon Math Trade I can pick up a copy.

My friend, Chris, was on his way down from Michigan for the Con and was getting close so I suggested playing something quick. For Sale did the trick, same group as Glen More.

Chris arrived after For Sale and I showed him my recently completed set of Dominion which I brought to the Con for all to enjoy. I was surprised to find that it may have been the only copy of Dominion in the library (I don't remember seeing any other sets but there may have been a couple others, probably at least Adam's). I was happy to see many people using it throughout the weekend and received many nice compliments on my hard work. Phillip asked if I would exchange it for his PS3 and I fervently refused.

Chris had played a couple times previously and wanted to give it another shot so we set up a game and were joined by Barry. I abused a Tunnel/Vault/Crossroads/Wharf combo and ended the game with over 10 Gold in my deck just from discarding Tunnels which in turn lead to many 12+ money turns with extra buys from the Wharfs. Chris enjoyed the variety of some of the newer cards and changed his initial impression of the game just being a mad race for Provinces.

I was originally supposed to get this in the Math Trade but after a clerical error the results were changed and I was no longer getting it. I hadn't played it before so I wanted to learn it so I could grab a copy from someone who hadn't gotten their copy traded if I ended up liking it. I later bought it from Shea which was a win/win because his copy no longer ended up trading after the Math Trade correction.

Chris brought a copy with him so he taught it to me and a couple other guys and we were on our way. As a fan of tableau builders I thoroughly enjoyed this one and it consolidated my decision to pick up a copy. I played this twice during the weekend and tried a different strategy each time to explore the game's variety and was pleasantly surprised at how differently my two games were (the first was a research heavy game and the second was colonize heavy). I'm excited to continue exploring this one and see if it scales well down to 2 players so I can introduce it to my wife.

Dinner time rolled around so I grabbed some Qdoba with Chris and we came back to play some more while we ate. I suggested Mosaix, which I picked up for Christmas, and we played a quick game. I'm a big fan of this one as a nice light puzzler which plays fast. I love spatial reasoning games and this one hits the spot nicely. I haven't tried it solo but I probably will at some point.

I joined the Crokinole tournament again this year since I needed to defend my title from the last Con. I made it through 2 rounds and then ended up losing to Adam who went on to win the whole thing. He said that our game was the closest one he had played so I awarded myself with a 2nd place finish in the tournament. Congratulations to Adam on the win, he may not be Canadian (I don't think) but he is a really great guy. He's also relatively new to our group and this was the first official game that I've played with him (if I'm remembering correctly).

I've heard some pros and cons for this one and it seems to be a love it or hate it type of game so I wanted to see which side I would come down on. I met Alan who was nice enough to teach and put up with us for the game. Turns out that I'm on the hate it side, probably not as strong as hate but more that I just don't want to play it again. There were a lot of neat ideas but I found it to be pretty fiddly and I hated the cheater tokens even if they are a nice thematic element.

Things were winding down for the night and we found Todd who was willing to stick around for one more game. He suggested Sentinels and I had wanted to try it out so I agreed. He taught us how to play and we set up a game against Doctor Doom or Raptor Island. I played as Weather Wizard and spent most of the game talking like I was under water. Chris played as a big robot guy and spent most of the game doing nothing. Todd was She-Flash and played a billion cards per turn. Doctor Doom didn't end up crashing the Moon into the Earth and by the time he got mad at us the game was basically over in a turn as we were able to deal over 30 points of damage to him in a single turn. I would like to play this again with one of the harder bosses/difficulty.

I enjoyed this game as a fun super hero co-op that you don't have to take too seriously. The theme was great and it captured the essence of a fake comic book franchise perfectly. I especially loved the flavor text (which I read like I was under water).

Time for one more game before we headed home. Chris hadn't played Agricola before so I suggested it and we ended up picking up 2 more for a 4 player game. I didn't do my usually play all of my cards strategy as they didn't really line up with each other but I did have a guy that let me gain resources when I bought the major improvements that correspond to wood/clay/reed so I ended up buying all three of those. I made a fatal mistake in the last round letting the renovation action go by thinking no one could take it and later found out that Barry had a card that let him renovate for cheap so I ended up missing out on the 8 points I would have gotten for taking it. Oh well, I played a good game up until that point (only making one other mistake earlier when I forgot about one of my own occupations) and finished in second.

Chris seemed to enjoy the game and didn't get too frustrated at the "you can't do everything you want to" mechanics. This is still one of my all time favorites.

This concluded Friday night and we headed back home around 5am to catch a brief sleep before heading back on Saturday.

One of my co-workers joined us on Saturday morning along with his son. They wanted to try out 7 wonders which I had played with them previously, we recruited Adam, Krista, and Kent for a full 7 player game. Kent ended up winning with a seriously impressive table consisting of 2 of every type of card and the leader that scores sets of 7 for a killer 14 points. He cleaned up on military as well and was Rome so scored some more points off of his other leaders.

We played a second game later in the day after Chris took off for the night and they seemed to really enjoy the game after getting a couple plays under their belts. I personally have been digging the leaders expansion as it adds some nice variety to the game. I'm pretty excited for the Cities expansion also as I don't really mind adding 5-10 minutes of play time per expansion for the added variability.

I ended up buying this game from Adam F through the Math Trade after enjoying it at last year's Con. I had been talking it up to Courtney and we finally were able to make time to play it at the Con after failing to do so at work. I had to teach it to everyone so the rules explanation took a while and then the game went long as it was everyone's first game (besides me). There wasn't much combat as they tried to figure things out and I didn't want to be too aggressive. I went culture heavy backed by a nice batch of coins from lucky great people draws and was able to generate well over 20 culture by the last turn of the game (between cities, wonders, and tech). I ended up winning on culture and Courtney was close behind with a Tech victory only 1 turn away.

I'm excited to try this game out some more now that I actually own it, now I just need to decide when to pick up the expansion.

I arrived late Sunday morning to find mostly everybody already playing something but luckily Raman was looking for a game too so we searched for a good 2 player game. He suggested the Railways of the World Card Game and I was interested so we went through the rules quickly and set it up. I enjoyed how well it kept the feel of the board game but boiled it down to a nice light 30 minute game. I'm definitely interested in trying this one with more players to see if it's worth adding to my collection. Thanks to Raman for teaching.

While we were looking for another game Adam recruited me to play RRT. I absolutely cannot turn down a chance to play so I jumped on it. We grabbed another player, Steve, and I taught him how to play while Adam packed up his collection. Steve got off to an early lead and then I blew past him by making the first 3 link delivery followed by a couple of major lines and some 5 link deliveries. I hit the income ceiling pretty quickly as I had to take out 7 shares to fuel my lead and I started to run out of money and suffered a cube shortage near the end of the game. Steve made an incredible comeback and got about 30 points (including his Barron) in the last turn to my 6. We ended up tying for one of the most memorable game I have played yet. I absolutely love the Europe map for 3 players. Glad I got this played at the Con, I think I've managed to barely get it played on Sunday for at least the last couple years.

We were going to play a LotR co-op game but I got diverted into trying this one out while we waited for additional players. I had heard good things about this being an excellent simulation of a traditional video game fighter and it did not disappoint. We both had our fair share of crazy combos to nearly kill each other and it pretty much came down to our last card flip which I guessed correctly for a finishing combo.

I traditionally don't like combat systems that involve guessing what your opponent is going to play but in this case it capture the essence of the style so well that it was very exciting and engrossing. I would love to play this one again to try out some of the other characters.

I picked this up in the math trade (thanks to Shea for running this despite his hectic schedule) and wanted to try it out. Alan suggested it and graciously taught us how to play. I was pretty familiar with the game from reading about it ahead of time and it played pretty close to how I thought it would but with little surprises from time to time that I enjoyed. This was a very clever game and I'm very excited to give it additional plays.

We finished up and discovered that we had played the last game of the Con. I packed up my games which were the only ones left at this point and headed home after chatting for a bit. Another great weekend full of games and fun, I'm already looking forward to next year!
