I've creating this geeklist to keep track of games I've playing with or plan on trying with special education students.

***Please suggest any game that you believe would be helpful.***

For the past 2 years, I've been volunteering in special education classrooms. (I'm the parent of an adult son with severe nonverbal autism and I'm hoping to be a special educational assistant with students who are verbal and somewhat milder than my own son.)

Last year it was a middle school class (grades 6, 7 & 8) of 6 students with multiple exceptionalities; 3 of whom had autism and intellectual disability and the other 3 who had an intellectual disability and ADD/ADHD. This year, I'm in a classroom of 8 students with mild intellectual disability. In addition, most have ADD/ADHD and all of the boys have behavioural issues; the most affected student has frontal lobe damage from a stroke he had as a newborn. All of these students are verbal but are 2-5 years behind grade level in reading and math (all are gr 6, 7 or 8).

I'm fortunate this year to work with a teacher (and support staff) who see the value of gaming for this group of students. It helps with social skills, math, reading, and as a fun activity at the end of the school day before the transition to getting ready to go home. It is a big boost to their self esteem with they win.

Generally I'm looking for games that are:

- short, 20-30 minutes at the most (attention spans are short and there has be time for academics )

- have little downtime and don't have eliminated players on the sidelines for a long time

- quick and easy to teach with simple rules that are easy to understand

- involve little to no reading as most really struggle with reading

- reward the skills the students have (ie quick reaction time, good dexerity)

- may have some luck so anyone has a chance of winning

- scale well to a large group (although sometimes the kids break into different groups so games for 2 are ok)

- not too childish in appearance (although this group aren't performing at grade level, they don't want to be treated as younger children).

My wife is a special Ed teacher, so this recommendation is field tested!

I picked this up last month for her on a whim and it was a big hit in her classroom. You have to build the level according to a card draw, and then you destroy it with birds on a Catapult. Some nice pattern recognition with translating the design on the card into the real life pieces. And of course shooting birds is fun.

Although it's more of a toy, it doesn't feel like it's talking down to the students, since plenty of grownups have Angry Birds on their phone.

As with Zitternz, this is a Haba game that older students will play. Easy to understand and develops fine motor skills. Our kindergarten speech aides use this when working with their students, since many need fine motor development. Say the sound correctly and get to stack an animal. Great idea.

This fast shape/number/colour recognition card game is a recent addition (and big hit) in the classroom. One of the most impulsive students was telling the teacher how he beat me in a game and wants to challenge her in a game. It rewards kids with quick reflexes (ADHD).

It is good for kids with little patience as there are no formal turns/waiting within the game. It is playable from 2 to 4 (and quite chaotic with 4 - which some students love). We simplified the scoring so that the student who got rid of all of his cards first was the winner.

Probably not suitable for students on the autistic spectrum due delays in processing times (see entry for Ghost Blitz).

Although the theme (medieval France) would be over the heads of many kids, I think a simplified game (no farmers!) of this tile laying game would be good for the students who are good at pattern recognition (on the autistic spectrum perhaps). As well, the number of tiles could be reduced to accomodate a shorter attention span/time period.

My junior high sp. ed students love this game. It is a treat for them. The theme is highly engaging (especially for boys). It is on the longer side, so I play it on a special occassion. I adapt it by taking out the magic cards to reduce the reading.

I have a cheap Crokinole board that I've thought of taking to school. (Valuable items should not be taken to school.) I'm sure the kids would enjoy this game as many have great dexerity and it can be played on different levels (as a turn taking game or even just as simple shooting.)

However, it is a lot like Sorry Sliders.

As far as the complexity of this game, it scales from no strategy at all, just move and pick up over and over, to strategic thinking trying to move so you strand you opponents on small ice floes so they can't score many points. No language at all, tiles are worth 1, 2, or 3 points each (depending how many fish are on them). Very quick playing.
