Only nine strategic level wargames on the American Revolutionary War.

Interesting mix of games; but, sadly, no "beasts" on this topic...yet.

Some very good innovations presented in these titles.

There was a great comparison of these games by Andrew Mulholland in 2008 in ATO - issue #23 - Guerra a Muerte issue:

http://www.atomagazine.com/Details.cfm?ProdID=58&category=4

My favorite of the lot is still 1776; although I'm also a fan of almost all the titles...even though they aren't chromed up monsters arrrh

I've heard of a few BIG strategic level ARW games on the drawing boards. Let's hope they see the light of day someday.

Also, covered these titles on Episode 3 of Guns, Dice, Butter: www.gunsdicebutter.com and you can download a two page comparison of all these games on the site.

Started it all in 1972. Johnny Big Bird did a review in Feb 2012 of the game:

Still my favorite. My second war game purchased after Panzer Blitz. Still play that copy nearly 40 years after acquiring.

Battle cards are a thing of beauty in this game; as is the hidden movement. Great, simple system for generating Continentals, rebels and tories based upon british presence and control. Even has the Continental Navy.

Been a tourney at WBC for 19 years. Not on the WBC lineup for 2012...at the moment...but I'm hoping a sugar daddy steps up (those that contribute $500 to WBC can sponsor a game).

Mr.Berg's take on the conflict.

Funky combat resolution system: 11 > 66 die roll table that produces withdrawals, retreats, surrenders and major victories. Random (and hidden) op points generated at the beginning of the turn utilized to perform game actions. Raising troops determined by british control and presence. Brits must also specify (writes down) where they will receive reinforcements/supplies the turn before they arrive. Americans purchase supplies on the black market.

No review of the game here on BGG.

Kicked off the Card Driven Wargame genre (yes, Up Front and others had cards, but, this one has spawned about 30 titles now). Been a tourney at WBC ever since:

Game marred by production muck up (LOTs of changes requested by designer didn't get incorporated into the printed copy). Get the errata from the designer:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/74170/designers-errata

Own it, but haven't played it. However, the good news is that this one is in the pipeline to be further developed/playtested/reprinted by Compass Games:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/696125/compass-reprint

Will also be interesting to see how/if the game incorporates the changes in wargame design that have occurred the last 15 years.

Mr.Herman's second bite at the apple. 19th ranked wargame in BGG-land. I like what Mr.Herman did with the French track and the combat system. Would love to see Mr.Herman take a EoTS approach (DEEP, chromed, healthy political dimension, how a theatre fits in within the context of a larger context, etc) to the ARW.

Well supported on consimworld (designer, developer and fan boys).

While primarily a set of scenarios for tactical miniatures battles, there is a simple point-to-point campaign game included called "Washington and Howe". Probably not a great boardgame, but useful for players wanting to tie together a set of miniatures battles with simple rules. 1776 and "We the People" are also mentioned as alternate campaign games.

Designer Lou Zocchi uses his World War Two strategic air combat system (The Battle of Britain, Flying Tigers, Luftwaffe) for eighteenth century land combat. This covers the war in the northern colonies.

And this game covers the war in the southern colonies. Like Minuteman: The American Revolution in the North, it was published in 1972, but the two games have nothing else in common, (different designer, publisher and game system).
