It seemed like a busy meet this month - by twelve they were having to retrieve extra tables from the storeroom.

What games were played?

Jess won a copy of this at Decembacon, but we haven't had a chance to get it to the table (largely because it's not recommended that you learn with two players), however I have been keen to play it.

Ian brought his copy along and taught it to me, and Tegan who had played before joined us for a three player game (which from most accounts is the perfect number for this game).

It is an elegant design pulling together a lot of familiar mechanisms - worker placement, resource management and area control etc - but it all fits together really nicely and feels like its own game.

Players are contractors building up a city using elves and dwarfs (and gnomes if you can afford them).

Ian did a great job of teaching the game, which flowed mush easier than it seemed it would from the rulebook.

It was a very close race, I managed to win by just two points, with Tegan in second, though I am certain Ian would have won had Tegan not swapped player order with him in the last round, as he was sitting on a huge pile of resources and contracts and had planned ahead (as opposed to me).

Great game, looking forward to playing again.

Speaking of elegant designs with borrowed mechanisms, we played Lords of Waterdeep next. I think this might be my third WABA in a row playing this game, so I won't explain it too much.

I taught it to Ian, Tegan and Scott.

It was a very close race - Between the other three. I came last by a much larger margin. Tegan took the win, I believe.

A current favourite that I have been playing a lot of.

After a lot of hemming and hawing, we ended up with Notre Dame next, which Warren said he could muddle through the rules of... Luckily Jason was around to teach and run the game, which made it run very smoothly.

Warren, Scott, Ian, Tegan and I played.

It's largely a game about card drafting, but also about managing your resources (very tough to do!) and keeping your rat population low, or else face a fairly harsh penalty.

Players draw three cards from their own deck (each has an identical deck), choose a card and pass the other two. Then choose a card and pass the final one. Then each player will get to play two of the three cards they ended up with.

Finally there are three communal cards that any one can pay a coin to use the power of.

Then there is a board where players need to place a cube into the match area of the card they play. You have a limited amount of cubes though, and are rewarded for building up the number of cubes you have in an area.

And each player has a rat-meter and if it ever goes beyond 9, you loose 2VP and a cube. Harsher than it sounds.

Lastly, there is a carriage that you can drive around the board and collect points.

This was my favourite game of the day (In a day where I loved every game I played). Luckily, I have a recently purchased copy of this on my shelf that hasn't been played yet either. And it is my third Stephan Feld game played, and I have loved all three.

It was very close between Ian and I, at first we thought it went to Ian, but in a recount, it was awarded to me.

Next I taught 6 Nimmt! (In the WABA collection as Category 5, I believe?) to Ian and Tegan. Warren, an experienced player, played as well.

I did a bad job of teaching though, as both Ian and Tegan added their score cards to their hands before I realized what had happened. Oops!

So on a re-do, Ian won by a mile - The only played to take zero points.

And we played a second hand, which I won with only one point.

Fun and quick game - I like it best with four.

Rob and I picked this up in Canberra when we were there for a flying visit for a Disc Golf tournament. Flying in more than one sense of the word, I guess.

Anyway, this is a fun little card game where we compete to have the most cards remaining in the "Machine" when it stops running.

Chris had been trying to arrange a game of this for a while and I'd been looking very much forward to it too, because I'd heard it's a lot better than Sid Meier's Civilization: The Boardgame. We played with Richard and Mark.

It exceeded my expectations! It captured the feel of the computer game very well, and its mechanics were much closer to the computer game without being too fiddly. It took us a little while to get our heads around a few aspects of the game though, and being a long game, we didn't finish.

Mark was rampaging towards victory, being the leader in culture, commerce and military ... until we all ganged up, destroyed his armies and let Chris almost win by getting into his capital city.

Overall we got a good taste and we should be quicker next time, which hopefully will be soon.

Mark taught Laura and Warrick this game while I joined in as a forth player.

In this episode it was a peaceful first two turn (although Laura trailed forth in both round because she was unable to catch up to the other three) but all hell broke loose in the third round.

Mark and Warrick proceed to lose 2/3 of their ships only for warrick to come first and face the slavers taking away most of his crew (1 left), only then to stumble into a combat zone and lost his last crew. Meanwhile the others stay behind and profited from his demise and pick up lots of goods for a whooping final delivery.

Great game, one of my favourite definitely.

Me, Judson, Warrick and Laura got down and all learn this trading game. None of us have played it before but the rules are really simple and it was no time before we got down the haggling of running a successful business.

In the end Laura was too shrewed a negotiator and won the game but some $200,000.

It really is a no hold all out negotiation game. I enjoyed it but yes it would need the right group.

Make me wonder about Lords of Vegas though, are they similar?

Finished off with a game of this 4p Judson, Kylie, Warrick and me.

It is a good gateway game and there is not very much seperating between the groups. We all went for high share strategy so it's a bit different to the usual.

Judson won by stealing a company off Warrick near the end. From then on it was inevitable that he will win.

Played a game with Kylie and Gemma. We had Nobles (most in each of the quadrants), Citizens (largest settlement) and Discoverers (place on many horizontal lines) as the victory conditions. I ended up winning with a sprawling group of settlements in the middle of the map and a smattering of settlements at the top and bottom to fulfil the Discoverers points.

Good quick game, and one I am enjoying more with each play.

Played a 5-player game of Thunderstone with Kylie, Dee, Gemma and.. uh.. some other guy I forget the name of (sorry!)

We had a lot of weapons and some powerful heroes, and the game gravitated towards collecting these, especially with the Veris hero, who gave extra attack power and light to heroes who were carrying weapons.

A good fun game but the mix felt a little uninspired this time around. I'd prefer less weapons and more spells, villagers and items.

Teaching game of Dungeon Petz with Gemma and Laura. We only got to the fourth turn but had to end it there as the day was coming to a close.

The hardest thing about Dungeon Petz is learning the game, it just has so many tiny rules. It's great fun once you get the game down though.

Gemma ended up winning on around 35 Reputation points, with myself and Laura at around 32-ish. Very close in the end.

Oliver, Raymond and Michael sat down with me to learn (one of) my newest game(s) with me, I having read the rules beforehand. It is a tile and worker placing game with scoring in opposing means (tiles score for the same colour together, workers for workers in a row with the means for placing tiles and workers working against each other).

It is a nice looking game with Oliver winning on 67, followed by Raymond on 62, Michael 61 and me on 61.
