These games require a printed sheet of paper, one or more pens, and nothing more. No stones, pawns, dice, or tokens of any kind.

The games should have been designed for this purpose. Not economic versions of games with laminated boards or heavy card stock.

Neither are there pen and *blank* paper games here. Lists for the aforementioned game types already exist.

In the 50's, printed hex pads were available for playing this game with pen or pencil, and I've heard it reported that Einstein himself kept a pad in his office.

I used to print out a 24x24 dot grid on computer paper (back in the day) and play Twixt at lunchtime with one of my co-workers. It worked really nicely.

Wayne Schmittberger's outstanding book contains a chapter on paper and pencil games; of particular interest are one-capture go on both square and hexagonal tesselations, and "Octagons", an interesting connection game invented by the author. Schmittberger also points out that Havannah can be played with pencil and paper even though it was originally conceived as a board game. It seems to me that Star, *Star, Y, Poly-Y, and Superstar are also connection games that could be played on paper.

Sid Sackson produced five books of playsheets for exactly this kind of game in the 1970s: Games of Art, Beyond Solitaire, Beyond Words, Beyond Competition, Calculate!.

However, Beyond Solitaire and Beyond Competition used dice cards (supplied) and Calculate! used a pocket calculator (remember when they were cool?) so they don't qualify.

Another compendium of connections--many of which can be played on pencil & paper as they involve only placement without movement or capture.

You can print out the cards, or just write them out on 9 business or index cards, and with the instructions (for the first few plays), play. You will be writing/drawing on the reverse sides. No dice or pawns or anything required. You can easily stop between turns (put them in your wallet if you like) and start up again really easily.
