I am a special education teacher and I also present professional development sessions for teachers on using games effectively within the classroom.

There are so many benefits for kids when using games in the classrooms and especially in the special education classroom. I find I need to modify some of my games to reduce the length, complexity or wait time to make my kids more successful while playing them.

I am compiling this list to assist others in modifying games for their own children or students. I am always looking for new ideas for games to play with my students so please share your ideas.

I only play with about two flags to cut down on game length and only use one play board. I don't play with the upgrades. I tell them if they need to imagine where they will turn to stand up, face the way their robot will turn and then turn the way their card tells them to turn.

I tend to take the magic items out of the deck due to the amount of reading involved on the cards.

I always have the students start resolving their actions from the the tools every turn (and go clockwise) so it is less confusing for them, rather than have the start player determine where they will start.

I will play this with a group of students and change up how we play depending on who is playing with me. I tend to have three students vs. the teacher. I will allow them to just use any letters on the board to create their word, whereas I will have to have my letters touching each other.

I don't play with farmer scoring with certain students.

This is a great game to have students play. May students struggle with Scrabble because they can't visualize the words. With Keesdrow, they simply have to recognize the word, just like a word seek. I play where the students play as individuals and I add their score up and compare it to my score.

I usually start with 6 cards in the circle, but will add or subtract more depending on the abilities of the students I am playing with.

I have played this with students in a social skills classroom where before they took their turn, they needed to say a compliment to another player.

The base game that I have simply asks you to lay out the choices. I take a sticky note and write which choice it is, from 1-6, and put each card in front of a number. I also make sure the kids are ready before they reveal, and I will orally count down before revealing the choices.

This can be a tougher game to learn, especially with the river. I have had the river move at a constant speed before, or simply eliminate the variable movement of the river; essentially the river always moves at one and the +1,+2,and -! is applied to the base of 1, meaning the river will move a max of three and at times, it won't move.
