Another excellent turn out, the room seemed packed for most of the day, and I know there were several newbies who came along to.

What did you play and what did you think?

I taught and played several games with several different people to start the day off.

It's a card-tower-building game, with fairly simple (basically Uno) rules. You must follow the floor plan of the card placed on the top of the tower, then place another card on top that gives instructions to the next person. There are 'skips,' 'reverses' and the like, but also a little Super Rhino figure that you may have to move from one floor to another, without knocking over the tower.

Here's an impressive photo from someone's session report:

I knocked the tower down on every game I played in.

Seemed to be well received all round. I really enjoy it even though I almost always lose.

Played most of a game of this with Leece, Rob and Ian. Left right before (I assume) Rob won to help a mother and son who looked a little lost. (Taught them Super Rhino which the son loved)

Anyway, this seemed like a good game, which I was dismal at.

Players attempt to place inventions in the right place, chronologically. Easy concept, but it works well. Be the first to get rid of four cards to win. Would play again for sure.

Next Ian joined me and we played a round of Mondo with the mother and son (I think the son's name was Lou, I am afraid I don't remember the mother's name).

It's a simultaneous-action tile laying game, sort of similar to Galaxy Trucker, where you are trying to lay your tiles correctly to earn points (for most animals, land masses, quickest time) and not lose points (incorrect placement/missing tiles and active volcanoes).

We played the most basic version, but I guess it was just a little too much for Lou, who kind of gave up and asked for help (and we all helped him out).

We didn't end up scoring all of the tiles, but I am pretty sure the mother would have won, she took to the game very easily!

I like it, but most people I've played it with find it very stressful...

Next Ian, Tegan, Jess and I played Village It was a learning game for all of us, and we did get a few rules wrong, though we corrected them as best we could as we played.

Because of the mistake, at first the game seemed incredibly brutal - Once we corrected the rule, it made the game work a lot better. It's still on the heavier end of the worker placement spectrum, but not that hard really.

There are a lot of rules, and a lot that don't make thematic sense, so it may not be the easiest game for a non-gamer to grasp.

But, by the end, I think we all agreed it was a fun game, I am sure future plays will be better.

Ian won by just two points. I wasn't too far behind in third place, and interestingly we all took different strategies, and it was pretty obvious they could all pay off and win a game.

Finally we got in three quarters of a learning game of Pret. We had to finish up because we ran out of time, so we skipped the last three months of this heavy economic game.

And boy, was it heavy. Unfortunately, the rulebook is less than ideal (and the FAQ that I printed out is pretty huge), but aside from that, the cards that are available every round need to be explained by looking them up in the rulebook. I get why they do that, but it really slowed the game down, especially since some of them weren't clear even after looking them up.

BUT, they game is quite thematic, all of the actions make sense. You are collecting designs, hiring people, leasing buildings, buying material to make clothes and sending them to fashion shows to earn money and reputation.

They way it all works together is very nice. I liked this game a LOT. I am also pretty sure I liked it more than the rest of the group though.

It would definitely reward multiple plays.

I am also confused by the final score - before we added them up, I would have bet Ian won, followed by Jess, then Tegan then myself. It was the exact opposite, with me in front and Tegan very close behind me (in fact, she forgot to make a move in the last round that would have won her the game).

I am so surprised that I think it is possible I was handed a wrong denomination at some point (I do have a bad habit of just accepting what I am handed and not counting) BUT, it is possible, since I had a very good money engine going, and that's all the game is judged on in the end.

So it seems there are also a lot of viable paths to victory in this game to. I loved it and am really keen to play again. (I will be doing some forum browsing now that I've played to see if we had any rules wrong though)

Rob and I taught Theodora and Craig this fun game. Craig won with some impressive combinations. I got out with an almost sandwich, Rob got out with a bunch of stuff almost as impressive as Craigs, and the City Watch caught Theo who otherwise would have been battle Rob for second or maybe even Craig for first.

Turned my teaching game of this into Stew's teaching game of this.

First timers Rhoda and Bruce were taught by Stew and then joined by Tim and I for a five player game of double crossing deal and counter deal.

The money goes where the water .....hey where has my water gone?

A very tight game in the end, Stew winning by a point on 75 followed by three of us in the 70s and the last in 60s.

I used the always handy android app to make a random game for 5 players

Luckily for me, conspirator came up. And guess who spent the day before reading dominion strategy on conspirator?

Won the game by 20 points or so with 3 gold and 5 great halls forming the core deck.

Very simple game that relies mainly on the meta-game. But unfortunately just did not do much for Maggie and me

Mark and I arrived pretty late after attending a Magic (MTG) Celebration at GameTraders at Galeria, and so didn't have much time to play games. I had brought along Race for the Galaxy and so we decided to play that. Pretty good game with the decisive play coming from Mark in the final turn, having the right amount of cards in hand to play out a 6VP card and win by 5VPs.

Terry taught first timers Mark and I how to play San Juan. Following a game of Race for the Galaxy, this was well suited as the game play mechanics of San Juan were almost identical to Race. Play was fast paced, with little opportunity for me to slow things down with my AP. Terry crushed with over 40 VPs while Mark and I duked it out over a distant 2nd place, with me on 25 VPs and Mark on 24 VPs.

Hadassa and I had played this once before with 5 players and loved it so we figured we'd give it a shot with 2 players. It was ok, but most of the decisions seemed straightforward, the resource prices didn't fluctuate so much, and we kept pace with each other so we both reached 21 cities at the same time, whereupon Hadassa won with more money. It's better with more players.

I think this was about the 4th time Hadassa and I had played this. We played with Chris T who'd played it before but a while ago and Shaun/Sean who hadn't played before. Chris got off to a great start and was on 20 points before anyone else had any points then got another 10 points the next turn, all before there'd been any scoring rounds! But everyone ganged up on him and I think he ended up beating me narrowly, but Hadassa won by a decent margin. She often wins this. It's tough for a first play, but Shaun/Sean seemed to enjoy it and got the hang of it pretty quickly.

A long time in the planning, Lauren (Terran), Jason(Protoss), Ian(Protoss) and I(Zerg) played this OOP modern classic with the Brood Wars expansion. It hasn't hit the table in a while and the first few turns dragged a bit as we struggled to remember all of the finer rules details.

However the game did eventually start to flow a bit more and we were soon throwing down attack cards, hampered somewhat by the lack of splash damage across the table. The conquest points were locked away in a few inaccessible planets and the game devolved into Protoss vs Zerg and Protoss vs Terran.

Ian called it one or two rounds before the 2nd End is Near event card would have come out, to leave the Zerg narrow winners on 7 points (Zerg, Protoss, Terran, Protoss).

Definitely a game that would reward regular play, but I don't have the time to devote to a 20-odd minute set up and 4-odd hour game these days. If only this game had been around during my uni days!

Tim was kind enough to teach this to Genevieve, Rudolf, Warren and myself.
I am a big fan of railway games and this one certainly had all the hallmarks. The delivery system is very similar to steam except that once a city has received a good the demand is satisfied and that city is 'blanked out' opening up the way for future same coloured shipments to go through. The dice that you use are rolled at the end of your turn thus giving you plenty of time to consider strategy prior to your next go reducing thinking time considerably.
Genevieve won though Tim made up a lot of ground in the last two turns making it a close victory.
Overall I liked the game and felt that there were a number of viable paths to success.

A first-time run through of this by 5 players: Kylie, Dean, Natasha, Owen and myself (hope I got the names right....). Kylie won by a mere ship length.

When approaching this, someone said 'think Bohnanza' and they're absolutely right: try to collect types of goods and trade with other players. I liked this game for its clever combination of mechanics with a trading/nautical theme and attractive components. Will book another game of this in the future, now I have got a feel for it.

Opals and I played this before joining bigger groups. I was blessed with massive luck, and a hero that looked like Gwyneth Paltrow, so I won by miles. That is the only problem I have with this game, there isn't really much of a 'catch up' mechanism if one player starts streaking ahead. Nevertheless, it's a great 2 player adaptation of Settlers.

Just got the mini version of this fun game. Opals and I started off playing a two player game, and she won by a long shot. Later in the day, Richard, Bruce, Opals and I had a 4 player game, which was the first time I've ever played it with more than one other person. I managed to win by a small margin, but it was pretty close.
I think I still prefer the deluxe version because the tiles are more stable, but the advantage of this small kit is that I can take it to cafes and stuff!

I'd been wanting to give this one a go for a while now! Ended up with a nice large group: Richard, Micha, Opals, Oliver, Bruce and I.
What a punishing cooperative game! I think out of at least 5 goes, we only managed to save enough POIs to win once or twice. In the first game, we consistantly rolled 7:5, which made for a particularly explosive bedroom. I think at least 2 firefighters and 2 POIs 'died' in our attempts to tame that one room.
After finally beating the 'easy' house we tried the advanced scenario, and never managed to best it. We could hardly even get to the fires in time, let alone the POIs, before the house collapsed on us. There was one great moment when 3 firefighters combined their titanic efforts to save ...a puppy. HOORAY!
A really great coop game
