I've often evaluated my spending habits to see if I might need to curb my rampant game purchasing. Then I've just as often discarded the ridiculous notion. I don't need to change my game buying habits -- but rather adjust the other parts of my life to better support my spending sprees.

I tend to view nearly every non-gaming purchase I make as money spent on something less important than games. And not necessarily in abstract ways. I find myself waxing over games that could have been, if certain other expenses hadn't gotten in the way. Surely, as a bonafide Geek, I can't be the only one here who does this. So share your own anecdotes about this phenomena.

What do you think?
Am I the only one who does this? Certainly not... Back me up here!
What specific expenses have you made where you weighed the true cost in games?
Does your spouse/SO/family think you're absolutely nuts?

My wife and I went out to dinner and then to see X-Men 3 for our anniversary. Dinner was $36, the movie was $18. Grand total: $54... Of course, in my mind, that came down to passing on my very own copy of Crusader Rex from Time Well Spent @ $44 + $7.16 ... $52.11 -- with enough left over to get a Snickers bar or two.

Funny thing, though... When I told my wife I treasured our special night out together as much as getting a new-in-shrink copy of Crusader Rex, she didn't seem overly impressed.

Our son Ben ran out of diapers the other day, and I needed to pick some up for both his daycare and at home. We usually go with Huggies or the store brand, as they work and are far, far less expensive than Pampers. Unfortunately, they were completely out of stock of his size in everything but Pampers -- and only had the super mega size -- which cost $19, or $7 more than the store brand for the same size.

So as I'm in the checkout lane, I'm gritting my teeth, thinking "Dammit, I could have gotten a copy of Mu & Mehr from the BGG marketplace for that!"

I started a new job a few weeks ago, in a fairly professional environment. Since I had been freelancing for several years, I only had one set of business dress clothes. Well, I had to bite the bullet and pretty much buy an entire wardrobe. While I don't mind dressing up, I do mind the competition for my gaming dollar. 9 dress shirts, 7 sets of business slacks, 8 pairs of dress socks and 2 pairs of dress shoes later, I'm out the following games from Thoughthammer -- especially painful since I had just reacquired an interest in more wargaming.

A House Divided: The American Civil War 1861-1865 - $31.50
Age of Napoleon - $29.22
Bonaparte at Marengo - $42.46
Britannia - $27.97
Commands & Colors Ancients - $39.00
Friedrich - $38.97
Here I Stand - $55.30
Rome At War: Fading Legions - $31.49
Soldier Emperor - $45.49
Twilight Struggle - $34.20
War Of The States: Chickamauga & Chattanooga - $34.99
War Of The States: Gettysburg, 1863 - $34.99

(Don't do the math. It's sad.)

I work in a section of downtown St. Louis where there are lots of nice restaurants all within walking distance for lunch. I really need to get out of the office during the day and get some time to refocus -- but sadly, going out to lunch 4 times a week has put a serious dent in my gaming budget. At an average of $9.50 per meal (including tax and tip) since I started the new job, I've been eating myself out of a copy of the new FFG Fury of Dracula ($32.47 + S&H) from Dragon Talon Games each week!

I'm overdue for an oil change by about 500 miles right now. I know I should be more mindful and take care of this right away, but I'm seriously starting to consider changing my own oil -- after all, every time I let Valvoline change my oil for me, it costs me a copy of Ra from TimeWellSpent ($23.50)!

I'm really interested in Antike, hoping that it's a compelling blend of Euro-design and civ building. I've had my eye on it for a while, but have yet to bite the bullet, as I'm not sure how much table time it would get.

At least, that's the excuse I keep using.

Sure, I could have picked it up for $55 from the BGG Marketplace, but for some reason, stocking up on milk, bread and other "essentials" from the grocery store seemed more important to Trish. I could have easily lived off of stale pretzels and Spaghettios for another week.

Sorry, Benjamin. I love you and you're my precious little boy, but you're not getting a new Thomas the Tank Engine train set -- not when it costs as much as a copy of Santiago from CardHaus.com ($24.64 + S&H).

After all, let's face it. We've both been good these last few weeks. I've just been a little better. And you already cost me a copy of Mu & Mehr for those Pampers last Sunday.

I recently bought a PSP ($380) and some games ($200+)...POO! - I could have got this instead...not that it too isn't a totally unnecessary purchase.

I work from home most of the time, but need to drive into work (3 hours) about twice a month. Now, I'm not complaining, because I DO get to work from home. But the last time, driving late at night, I got a speeding ticket. I sat there in the car pissed off. Not because of the ticket or the sneaky radar gun, but because I KNEW it was money I wouldn't be able to spend on games.

As it turns out, I could have purchased Crokinole, PirtchCar and a PitchCar expansion. Games I've been drooling over for far too long.

Every day I work takes me about 70+ miles (there and back), which translates to about $25 a week. (Glad those Corollas get good mileage.)

Name your Euro ... on GameSurplus, they're all about this much.

Thank heavens the summer's here!
