I came in with my five new games from Essen and was hoping to play all five - And I just made it with five minutes to spare!

We started with Snowdonia.

All but one of the games we played we my first play, and we had to learn from the rulebook, which I know is not ideal, but we did it anyway. My initial impression of the games was that this one was my favourite.

The game is a worker placement game where you are building a train line up the side of a mountain in Wales. It all fits together wonderfully, it's very thematic.

Before each round cubes are drawn from a bag to both stock the available resources and to potentially cause events (which essentially just progress the game), which I really liked.

Plenty of options and paths, and seems like it's going to have a lot of replay value.

Ian, Tegan, Jess, Tim and I played this one.

Jess won it, with Ian in second place.

Up next, Tim, Jess, Jacob and I learned Keyflower.

It's an auction/tile laying/worker placement game with some pick up and deliver in there for good measure.

It was a little overwhelming in some ways on the first play, though the game itself makes sense and is fairly easy to learn.

Tiles come out and you can either bid on them using meeples (well, keyples as they call them) of one of four colours. If someone bids on red meeple, you must place two red to beat it and so on. Plus, you can take the action on top of the tile (even if it's in someone else's village or still being auctioned) to take an action, but it still has to match the colour. And then someone else who wants to take the action must put two of that colour meeple on it, and then three.

Really interesting and lots of combos.

This will be getting better and better with more plays I am sure.

Jess won by a large margin.

Lots of people came by and asked about this one - It's the game with the big interlocking gears which move around each turn causing your placed workers to progress to different action spaces.

I taught this one to Tim, Jacob and Misha.

It's a game all about timing and combos. I managed to very early in buy both of the farms meaning I never had to feed my people, and seemed to have set myself up very nicely, however I neglected the temples and Tim managed to beat me by just one point.

Another excellent game, it's more than a gimmick - the gears are integral to the game. I like it a bunch.

This game has been out a couple of years already, but I new printing for this recent Essen has made it easier to get.

The game is about salt mining in Poland in the 1500s. Tim, Jacob and I played this one.

The game is made up of a board showing the kingdom, and a bunch of tiles below the board representing the mine. Two very interesting things about the game are:

a) The 'chain' rule where meeples have to be in a chain to the surface - you can't move a meeple if it will break the chain.

b) To fulfill the king's orders, you have to go to the castle, but to go to the castle, you have to queue up. It takes three turns to actually see the king and deliver the salt. If you get there and you don't have the salt to actually deliver, you take a penalty. So you have to plan ahead well, or take risks.

I liked this game a lot. In fact, I was surprised to find that I think this was my second favourite of the night.

It's a little bit Caylus-y (though Caylus is not a favourite of mine) and I would strongly recommend it.

Also, I won it. (My only win of the day)

We were feeling a little tired at the end of the night, and I considered not learning another new game, but I had come so close to my goal, I decided to push through and we learned Il Vecchio, the new game by Rudiger Dorn, who has made some games I've really enjoyed, though I've never played his biggest game, Goa.

So int his game you are old dudes trying to bring down the Medici. Mostly you are just moving workers to collect tokens to trade for points. It was a perfect end of night game - Not too heavy, but plenty to think about.

There are so many options/paths to pursue. It wasn't anything particularly new, (which is the criticism it has been getting) but I like what it does and it fits together nicely!

So I really enjoyed all five of my new games fortunately!

Even though Tim won again. Sheesh!

Began with a 2 player game of Biblios between Opals and I. Opals tried to stiff me by reducing the blue die to a paltry 1 point and then putting all the blue cards in the public space. A commendable tactic, but she didn't count on me collecting large amounts of green and yellow cards. If she had kept a couple of reds she would have won, but I managed to win the red die in the end with only one card and so took the victory by 1 point. A nice, devious church-themed struggle to start the day!
Took about 10-15 minutes to play. Really good filler.

I've played a fair few solo games of this and really love it, so I was keen to get more players in. The 4 who entered the infamous Dragonfire Dungeon were Daniel, Opals, Tom and James (I taught and played the monsters whenever one was encountered).
It started off well, but the game is so punishing that players will pretty much always be eliminated; an almost universally despised rule in a multiplayer game, which forces the losers to sit and watch.
James played as Tatiana, an archer, and started off badly, being caught in a giant spider web on his first turn, then coming to a dead end before falling off a plank bridge into the catacombs while trying to backtrack. This was a blessing in disguise, however, because, as it turned out, he fell face first onto a gigantic diamond... the best treasure IN THE ENTIRE GAME. After exiting the catacombs without too much trouble, and encountering a spear-trapped door which almost got the best of her, Tatiana waltzed out of the dungeon with 4000 loot points before morning tea time. This pretty much guaranteed James the win.
Daniel had an interesting time of it playing as Brother Gherrin. Portcullis upon portcullis fell behind him as he ventured further, until he finally came to a nondescript door which was as stubborn as he was. The hapless monk was speartrapped at least 5 times before the door finally opened. He then fell into the catacombs. Upon exiting the catacombs, Brother was speared by another trap, before finally having his head chopped off by a swinging blade.
Opals, playing as Chalarra, actually reached the central treasure chamber!!!! Her eyes lit up with delight at the sparkling baubles, but after looting a while in order to beat James' giant diamond, picked up a golden harp... Why she chose to play an earsplitting arpeggio upon this cursed instrument is anyone's guess, but Kallandra the dragon was predictably roused by the performance and fried Chalarra to an elvish crisp.
Tom played as Hugo the Glorious. What can I say except that his torch went out. He then spent half the game trying to relight it. Finally, after finding a stray redhead in his pantaloons he relit his torch, was exploded by a trap, drank 2 dodgey potions in a row, felt sick, then exited the dungeon at dusk with only a few dollars for all his trouble. At least he survived.
Took about 2 hours to play.

The first game I was able to play (very early into arriving too!) with a total of 6 players.

Apologies for forgetting most of your names from this game, I only vaguely remember a few people I was playing with but wasn't sure who else played, as we went straight into a game of 7 Wonders. My apologies for forgetting names - met alot of new people being my first day. Comment and I'll edit your names below

If I also remember correctly, Cthulhu won goo Nice quick filler as always.

Completely new to this game and really enjoyed it. Played a 4 player game with just the base game. I came last, but I did find yet another game to add to my WTB list.

Thoroughly enjoyed, and really well taught. Sadly the only person I forget the name of was the person who taught me how to play shake David taught the game! Thank you for being very thorough in your explanations - only one rule you missed but that's okay, I know for next time

4 player For Sale is always a hoot!
Tom, Daniel, Opals and I struggled to outbid each other for space sations and castles in this highly realistic real estate game.
I managed to win by playing conservatively, but only by 2 points.
Took about 20 minutes to play.

I think of all the "fillers" I brought along, this one went down the best and got alot of people hovering about wondering what the hell was going on

2 seperate games were played;

The first game played of this was a 3 player game. I was knocked out early losing my dice, with Ernest following very quickly behind. Elaine won this game almost with ease!

Players: Elaine, Ernest, Myself

The second game was a 4 player game, the maximum the game allows out-of-the-box. One of the two Ernests stepped away for a moment where Ivan stepped in, only takes a few turns for anyone to pick up so he was right at home. The other Ernest and Elaine had a bit of a dice tug-of-war towards the end but Elaine reigned supreme yet again!

5 player El Grande! Tom, Opals, Daniel, Elvina and I competing for influence over 15th century Spain.
Unfortunately, we only got as far as round 6 because everyone had to leave at about 6:45pm.
I was in the lead by about 25 points, but who knows how it would have turned out in the final 3 rounds?
This is a great game, and along with Village, is one of my absolute faves at the moment!
Took about an hour (to get to the scoring phase after round 6).

Once again, 2 seperate games of this were played.

In both instances I suggested that the players play the game as a Co-Op to help try and defeat the "Zombie Apocalypse" together... all before midnight of course!

The first game was a 3 player game and although we did well enough to meet most of the requirements of beating the game, we fell a few tiles short outside and became Zombie food.

Players: Andrew, Gracie, Myself

The second game went alot better. Was offering some of my shorter games for Tony to play and his eyes lit up at seeing the box for ZimP so naturally we went with that. Had the perfect house set up in the beginning allowing us to faceroll our way outside with totem in hand. A few cowers and we were set to bury the totem. A very deceiving easy win, very unusual to win at all in ZimP.

Players: Tony, Myself

I always love playing this game with anyone who's willing to play. Even more so I'm proud to let people know this little game was self-produced by a fellow Aussie!

A 4 player game was played of Dungeon Raiders, with a fair handful of "dicking" from one of the two Ernests. Torches were certainly our saviour, especially one of Elaine's that was able to reveal a sneaky dragon hiding in the last room of one of the levels.

Yet another rare occurance that everyone lived to see the end of the dungeon, with Ernest taking out the win having 17 gold in tow.

Ahhhh! One of the main reasons (if not the main reason) that I attended this event. The demo game was very handy as I'd only ever gone through the Quick Start rules on my own previously.

Ended up participating in 2 games;

My first game was the demo/intro round which helped get my head around some of the advanced concepts. Played as Rebels and ended up losing in a very close game. I was determined I could win with the X-Wing so chose the Rebels to go into the first round of the tournament...

Players: Ernest, Myself

The second match I played, and only for the tournament, was up against Genevieve. Not I said only, as I got trounced by Genevieve in a very obvious loss. A few grey areas on moves cost me a Tie Fighter kill which brought back into play, from there out it was all over very quick for me. Very good game and looking forward to any future tournaments held through WABA &/or Tactics. Congratulations to the winner and thanks again to my very worthy opponent; Genevieve.

Variant: Onyxia's Lair Raid Deck

As opposed to playing the standard "versus" game of the World of Warcraft TCG, I brought along the true enjoyable aspect of this game: a raid deck.

Raid decks create a singular opponent (one or several "boss" characters) for 3-5 players to attempt to beat. This game was played with 5 players, myself in control of Onyxia and 4 players attempting to slay the dragon.

The game started off in my favour, with some very nasty cards coming into play keeping all the players at bay. It was around the halfway mark where the odds turned against me and the players started playing some very powerful cards that left me with no hand and almost no use for my baby dragons cry

Very enjoyable game and the players were triumphant in taking down the dragon just before the night was out.

I think this was the one and only boardgame (besides the tournies) that was pre-planned on BGG before the event!!

Was great to sit down and get taught this game. It is fantastic and is like nothing else.
and yes, BGG reviews are right, this takes a long time to teach/learn.

I think this took about three hours?

Thanks to all for playing this.

After FFF, I was looking for a small game while I waited for Maggie to return. So I offered to teach this to a group of Spiel-lites.

A fairly close game by all accounts. Played the end game as per the rules - when you run out of one colour.

I must admit I struggled with this one. A few good placements near the castles made me look like I at least got a good (?) score.

Maggie finally returned and we found ourselves smack bang in the middle of game time. No-one was free and everyone finishing a game was playing x-wing.
So with everyone busy, we pulled out eclipse and had a quick game (around 2 hours with set up)
I pulled out the win with the money greedy alien race. I even managed to blow the GDSC apart to get 4 victory points.

Plus! We got to be excited as Supernova made its first appearance!! Nice tiny expansion that gives a bit of tension to the owning player.

Finally to complete the day, Warren, Mitchell, Maggie and I played love letter. this is the AEG version.

A great little game which was quite complex. The game swung around a lot with all four players ending with three kisses coming into the final round.

The last round was one the moments that you tell everyone about and put it as a tale of gaming awesomeness.
Second turn saw Warren eliminated with the princess. With the final few cards I baron'ed mitchell with my king.
Last round a hand I maiden'ed with a king in my hand. The princess was out of the game and I knew I won.
With the last round and nothing to stop me, Maggie put all on the line and used a prince to discard her hand. She picked up the card put aside at the start of the round. It was the countess. Winning her the game.

Cue shouts and cursing

Richard taught myself, Judson, Jeremy, Hadassa and Tim the family version of this.

We were threatened quite early with a big fire breaking out in the lounge and bathroom but after a few turns getting it under control we made quick progress in rescuing the victims and only lost our first victim a turn or two before we won the game.

I just received a copy of this from my BGG Secret Santa on Friday so I'm looking forward to giving the full version a go very soon.

Myself and Tegan taught this to Rachael, who is a newcomer to WABA. We took a break half way for the FFF game. I really love this game, but don't play it as often as I used to.

This was by far the highest scoring game I've ever played, with all achievements claimed, but no player having five. Tegan's end score was close to 70 I think, and Rachael's was very high as well.

I managed to work a combo that allowed me to rocket up through the ages, and start drawing from age nine while everyone else was still around ages five and six. It cost me almost my entire score pile to do it, but eventually won me the game, as I played an age ten card that gave victory to the player with the most achievements, which was me (with four). When I won my score pile had a grand total of four points

A really good game, despite the break, and one of the more tense I've played.
