I travel around a bit. I always try to look up the friendly local game shops (FLGS) in the areas I visit. Since the proprietors of these shops are taking all the financial risks, I don't feel bad at all about giving them some Geeklist kudos.

Active Imagination
Albuquerque, New Mexico
www.aigamestore.com

This is where my return to boardgaming began. Before discoving this gem of a FLGS, I had bought the Axis and Allies on a whim from a local toy store. I played Axis and Allies with cousins years earlier and remembered how much fun we had. After playing Axis and Allies I was hooked on board games...again. But where could I find all these interesting games I read about on BGG? After thumbing through the yellow pages I found Active Imagination. This FLGS is a grognards paradise! I have never seen such a comprehensive collection of new and out-of-print wargames. My wife discovered Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride here (thus hooking her as well).

My wife and I found this great Euro-game gem during a trip through Utah. Here we got our first in-depth education to Euro games. We were introduced to Lost Cities--a game that my wife and I still love. After visiting this store my wife and I abandoned hope of ever being rid of our board game addic...err passion.

Another great FLGS! Here I discovered Samurai, Twilight Imperium 3ed. and many others. My wife and I especially appreciate their friendly staff who tolerate our often rowdy kids as my wife and I decide which game will come home. Good luck and God speed Glenn!

Hmmm...what would describe my wife's and my reaction when we entered this store: a mixture between deer caught in headlights and children in a candy store. Most definately a gem.

Clicks
St. Louis, MO
www.gotoclicks.com

After the sad closing of Games, Crafts, Hobbies & Stuff in St. Louis nearly 8 years ago now, it took a long time to find another game store outlet with a commitment to promoting boardgames and an interest in becoming knowledgable about the growing boardgaming hobby.

I was pleased to find Clix in the Crestwood Mall, among their three St. Louis locations. They are a tad on the small side, but they have an excellent selection of boardgames and the staff are always helpful and happy to place special orders or track down copies of games among the locations.

It may be a little out of the way over the convenience of buying online, but I enjoy being able to pick up a game and look at it, and talk to the owner of the shop about gaming in general, share information about different designers and publishers, and make recommendations on games they should keep an eye out for.

Nova Comics
Springfield Virginia

The home of Nova Jacks, a Eurogame (mostly) group that meets ever Saturday from 6 till ???

I can't say enough good things about Nova Comics. While they are a comicbook store, the owner is also a gamer. There are usually 10-12 gamers there every Saturday, most of whom atre willing to try just about any new game, to see if they want to buy it if for no other reason.

The Family Game Store
Historic Savage Mill, Maryland

This is indeed a family game store -- owned and operated by the wonderful Sinex family; parents, sons and daughter. I wandered into their shop shortly after it opened last year and discovered the wonderful world of contemporary board games. (And no, I didn't know them before that day nor do I have any financial interest in the establishment -- all my enthusiasm is nonprofit.)

Every Saturday night they have an open Games Night, where a whole bunch of us regulars and anyone new who happens in is welcome to come and play any of several dozen games -- and folks often bring others from home as well. I've made some great new friends there and invite anyone at all local to join in -- gaming starts around 5 PM (I usually roll in sometime around 7:30) and ends at 12 AM or 1 AM or whenever we're finally ready to go home. There's also a D&D game set in ancient Rome that I believe is open to new players which meets Saturday nights as well.

Why Calyus? Well, I told Steve to get some copies in because it was the hot, hot, hot new game and as of two weeks ago, he still had copies on the shelf. My bad, apparently.

Paradigm Infinitum
Singapore

This store has gone through many changes over the years. From the immortalised name of Leisure Craft to the present day Paradigm Infinitum. While this may be the only boardgame store in Singapore, it nevertheless provided good services and tries hard to provide for the gaming community. It would be a shame to see such a place with such a long history go so I give them my whole-hearted support by constantly buying my games through them even though they may sometimes cost a little more compared to online stores.

This is a great FLGS. The main store is small but well organized with games. They sell board games, mini's role playing stuff, etc. The cool thing about GK is they are very friendly, fun staff, and great hours. They sell food for those long game sessions, and have a 1500 sq foot arena for gaming. They also have small room called the Dungeon, you can reserve for special gaming, mostly RPG groups reserve to play. But the best thing is if your game is going late in the arena the staff will let you close up, I been gaming until 230AM at times. They hold many organized events, but have plenty of space for open gaming.

As Doctor Johnson, who was born down the road at Lichfield, might have said: ‘…a gamer who is tired of Spirit Games is tired of life’. Compared to this splendid shop, where there really is something for everybody, Aladdin’s cave is a mere market stall.

Crimson Castle
Tuscaloosa, AL

The Crimson Castle may not be the biggest game store around in terms of square footage, but in terms of the fun to be found there, I can't imagine a bigger place. Frank Woods, the proprietor, truly loves games and the people who play them, and the group of people who congregate there are simply top-notch. This store filled a void in Tuscaloosa when it opened, and it will always have a special place in my heart. Had the Navy not called me away I'd still be happily spending all my free time there.

If anyone from back home is reading this, I miss you guys! Play a round for me!
