Spiel, held in the town of Essen each October, is one of Germany's two major game conventions, the other being the Nürnberg International Toy Fair in February. While Nürnberg is a trade show – and therefore strictly business – Spiel is open to the public, drawing roughly 150,000 people over four days. Hundreds of new games will be introduced at Spiel 2013, which takes place October 24-27. This preview covers games that publishers plan to release at Spiel or in the months leading up to it. In most cases, these games will be new for most Spiel attendees. Some smaller publishers show all titles released since Spiel 2012.

Details about the Spiel 2013 Preview:

-----• This Preview is organized alphabetically by publisher, with games ordered alphabetically under a publisher's heading. Click on a game's name to head to its dedicated page to see more images, read the forums, and so on.

-----• In most cases, if a game appears in multiple versions, typically due to it being released in multiple languages, each version will appear under its own publisher.

-----• This information is pulled directly from the game pages in the BGG database. Thus, as those pages are updated, this Preview will be updated, too. Yay, automation!

-----• If you subscribe to this Preview, you'll receive update notices whenever an item is added or edited.

-----• If you don't care to read about a game and are logged in, click the red X to hide the game listing for both now and future visits. Choose "Personal" for the reason when doing so. You cannot hide a publisher due to this Preview's special set-up.

-----• Publisher booth numbers, preorder information, game designer and artist signings, and more will be added once that info comes available.

Note that this information has been cobbled together from dozens, nay, hundreds of sources, so inaccuracies may have crept in despite my best efforts. I will update game pages as I receive additional information, and your fellow BGG users will undoubtedly do the same, thereby keeping this Preview as up-to-date as the BGG database itself.

If you're a designer or publisher with information to share – or if you have details about an upcoming Spiel 2013 release – please send me email (wericmartin @ gmail.com). I'll respond as best as I can given the tidal wave of data flowing through the game world in anticipation of the most exciting game convention in the world: Spiel!

Description:

All those carrots look so tempting that you might just snatch them – but what if the wolves have been expecting exactly that, a greedy rabbit just like you? You never know...

In Om Nom Nom, during the game you will roll dice, which will represent various kinds of prey. By clever play of your hunter cards, you will try to eat the prey and thus gain victory points. At the end of the game the winner will be the player with the most points.

The game consists of 3 rounds. Each round is divided into 4 phases – roll, play, score and cleanup. During the "Roll" phase one of the players rolls all the dice. After rolling the dice are arranged on the game boards. During the "Play" phase all players will play all 6 of their predator cards one by one. When everyone has selected their first card, they are revealed simultaneously. This is where the action happens. Did You manage to guess what everyone else will play? Were You the only one brave enough to sneak Your mouse after the cheese? Or did You like everyone else play the wolf, because no rabbit surely could resist that amount of carrots. During this phase, players resolve all their played cards by capturing dice and cards of other players. During the "Score" phase players score points for captured cards and dice. And during the "Cleanup", when all 6 cards have been played, players gather all their cards back in hand and a new round can begin. At the end of the third round, player with the most points is the winner.

Other Information: • Price €25, but discounted to €20 if you preorder. Brain Games' Janis Grunte explains how to preorder in this BGG thread.

Playing time: 10 minutes
Suggested ages: 12 and up
Categories:

Language:

Description:

Eggs of Ostrich is the name of the game, and ostrich eggs are what you're trying to claim.

The three players in this game each start with four sacks, numbered 2, 3, 5 and 7. They have five claim cards in hand, one for each sack and a "skip" card. Nine egg cards (valued 4-10) and three amber cards are shuffled, then two cards are removed from the game.

In each of the ten rounds, someone reveals the top card of the egg deck, then each player simultaneously chooses and reveals a claim card. All players who didn't choose "skip" divide the eggs equally amongst themselves, then place these eggs in the sack that matches the card they played. Each player then sets aside the claim card he used, leaving it out of play for the next round, after which it returns to his hand.

If an amber card is revealed, then if only one player plays "skip", he claims the amber, setting it next to his sacks; if no players or two or three players play "skip", then no one gets the amber.

If a sack ever holds more eggs than the number on the sack, it rips and all the eggs fall to the ground and break. Pity. That player covers that sack with the matching claim card, which is now out of play for him.

After ten rounds, the game ends, then players tally their scores. Each sack that holds exactly the right number of eggs is worth that many points; each sack holding fewer eggs is worth half as many points as the number of eggs in it, rounded down. Each amber is worth 4 points. The player with the most points is the ostrich egg champ!

Description:

It is a few years in the future and the nations of the world concur with the opinion of an unprecedented number of leading scientists: a combination of overpopulation, environmental change, and resource depletion has put the human species at imminent and dire risk. Something needs to be done – but what? In the span of a few weeks, top advisors and experts in each major world power conclude that the only way their people – and, indeed, all of humanity – will survive is via dramatic and immediate global de-population. With no one wanting to put their own people at risk, it will take aggressive and even inhumane acts to somehow save the world.

Tomorrow simulates a near-future in which six world powers struggle to save their people and culture in the face of imminent world calamity. You control one of six powers – the United States, the European Union, Russia, China, India, or the Arab Caliphate – in a live-or-die struggle to save the planet and your people, while preserving your culture and heritage for the generations hopefully to follow. Your objective is to contribute to the unavoidable de-population, while maximizing the goodwill of your people and the world. Tomorrow includes many exciting gaming elements:

  • High levels of social interaction: Much of the game is conducted via face-to-face diplomacy involving all six players.
  • Player determination: This low-luck game forces you to match wits with your antagonists – not roll dice – in order to beat them.
  • Variety: Every game is different thanks to a range of Event Cards that have many different effects on the action.
  • Various types of warfare to choose from, each with their own strengths and weaknesses: You can choose to use Conventional Military or Terror, or even unleash Biological and Nuclear horrors.

Description:

Dungeon Fighter: Fire at Will! is the first of four expansions for use with Dungeon Fighter, each themed to one of the four elements: air, earth, water and fire. In addition to adding new monsters, new weapons, new items and new armor, each expansion introduces a new game mechanism and three new ways to complicate your ability to throw dice at the targets on the game board. With this expansion, fire, you need to throw the die through a "burning" ring of fire held in the air. You might also need to bounce a die through a gate, toss three dice held in a row, or roll a die down a board and bounce it onto a target. The goal remains the same as the base game, survive the dungeon and defeat the boss!!

Description:

Game description from the publisher:

As owners of a fantastic steam park, you're to build gigantic, coal-powered rides to attract as many visitors as you can – but building attractions won't be enough. You'll also need to manage your employees, invest in advertising in order to attract and please the different kinds of guests visiting your park, and, above all, keep the dirt that your park produces under strict control!

Steam Park is an easy-to-learn game with two difficulty levels: one for the less experienced gamers and a more strategic one for those who want a more exciting challenge. In this management game, you'll have to build your own amusement park and make it the largest and most profitable in the region. By constructing the three-dimensional, wonderful rides designed by Marie Cardouat, you will see your park grow right before your eyes. Choose your strategy! Build Stands to attract more Visitors, or Toilets to keep the Dirt under control. Whatever decision you take, take it quickly: The less time you spend planning, the more time you'll have to maintain your park. Thanks to a clever, original action-choosing mechanism, winning in Steam Park is as much a matter of being the best as of being the fastest!

Description:

Hole of DOOM!!! is akin to Battling Tops in that players spin tops on a wooden board, trying to push the opponent into the dreaded hole of DOOM! For 2-4 players.

From the Cubiko website....

In late 2012, whilst playtesting 'Clockwise' eight year old Samuel continued his annoying habit of spinning the games delicately designed cog mechanism.

"Samuel stop it! Turn the cogs gently, don't spin them." I pleaded.

Now Samuel is a great playtester and since he seemed obsessed with his spinning discovery, and wasn't about to stop any time soon, I decided it was best to follow his lead.

So there we were spinning the cog mechanism harder and faster when suddenly the smallest cog jumped from its hole and spun by itself. Well that was it, Samuel completely dismantled the wooded mechanism and began spinning each cog individually. Biting my lip, I reluctantly joined in and a game which resembled the classic 'Battling Tops' ensued.

I gradually warmed to the abuse of my cogs, however, our makeshift board was littered with 5mm holes and the spinning cogs would fall as they cross them. Samuel thought this was great and he called them holes of DOOM!

Other Information: • Price €30

• Only twenty copies of Hole of DOOM!!! are available from Cubiko Games at Spiel 2013.

89. Board Game: Snapps [Average Rating:5.59 Unranked]
Designed by:
Published by:
Categories:
Mechanics:
Language:
English
Description:

A dexterity game for 2 or more players.
Plays in 10 minutes with 6 players.
For ages 6 and up .

In Snapps there are 6 blocks and a 8cm×8cm square board and all you have to do is place the blocks onto the board… simple.
Well, yes and no: You see, the blocks have magnets in them, and you must place the blocks without making any of them snap together. The first few blocks will be easy to place but as more blocks get placed, the available space on the board dwindles, and it becomes rather tricky to place the last blocks.

If all the blocks get placed on the board, the game enters a second phase, in which players must take turns to push a block towards the centre of the board. At some point the blocks will suddenly snap together, and the player taking their turn at the time is eliminated. Eliminate all your opponents to win.

Knowledge about the physics of magnetism is not essential; what you need are a steady hand and nerves of steel, because those snapping blocks will make you jump.

Schnapps is the adult variant, in which the player who makes the blocks snap together must drink a shot.

Other Information: • Price €15

• Only twenty prerelease promotional copies of Snapps are available. Perhaps you can purchase one and help improve the game description?

Description:

Yellow Jersey is a cycling race for 2-4 players. Starting in Paris, you move your team of three cyclists around France through a series of race stages by choosing (a variable number of) movement tokens from your stack, with the token being numbered 1-6. Each round the player holding the Yellow Jersey moves first. You will need to plan how to move your bikes so that you retain maximum movement and take advantage of opportunities to slipstream. Crashes, uphill slopes, and the outside lane will slow you down, whereas downhill slopes and the inside lane may work in your favor.

The race can be conducted either way around the circuit and the first player to get one cyclist back to Paris wins. (The game includes a team winning variant.)

Other Information: • Price €25

• Only 22 copies of this pre-release "tile version" edition of Yellow Jersey are available, with Birnbaum planning to officially release the game at the 2015 UK Games Expo.

Description:

Factory Fever plays in the warehouse of the Factory Fun factory. Instead of building the machines in your factory, now you must store the products in the warehouse, which is a very different task. What's more, you must store products of the same type in a group or have them connected by conveyors. These products are both dangerous and extremely heavy, so for safety reasons you must not drag them more than once, and all products of one type must be together. Building conveyors helps to connect similar products.

You know which products will need to be stored, but you don't know when and in which combinations, so you must anticipate the future by holding different good options for stocking the goods. The pillar in the middle of your warehouse is as annoying as it was in the factory (Fun) halls.

When your warehouse is finally filled, the game is complete. If each of the six different goods is stored in a single group, you are doing well. For one product that task is easy because you have to store that type of product only once (i.e., 1 tile). The very dangerous product you should place at the wall, and for the mixed product you decide at the end which product type it is. The conveyors should not have dead ends (to the walls or pillar). Each error results in 1 error point, so try to have the fewest errors.

For a new challenge, the B-sides of the boards get used. The player with the best score on the A-sides gets the hardest difficulty level B-side warehouse, and so on.

Other Information: • Seemingly available only as a playtest version at Spiel 2013. Why? Designer/publisher Corné van Moorsel explains in this comment on BGG:

Quote:
The artist promised and promised and promised ... but now returned the advance ... so I must find another artist ... while I agreed with a more experienced game artist to be more sure about a smooth progress ... hmmm, that's no guarantee too ... Hope to work with other artist soon and make a prototype with artwork (cut&paste prototype) to demonstrate in the Essen-booth and start a crowdfund campaign.

Update, Oct. 13, 2013: Aaaaaaand not even available in prototype form as van Moorsel says that his prototype artwork is "too ugly" to show at Spiel — not to mention that his first priority is selling what's on hand rather than showing off what's still to come.

Description:

In Leelawadee, butterflies search for delicious flowers, flowers that you as the gardener will provide. Different colors of flowers are available in different quantities, with forty flowers in all.

The game lasts five rounds; at the start of each round, flowers are randomly drawn and placed in the middle of the playing area. Players then take turns removing flowers from the supply and planting them in their garden. These flowers then attract the ten butterflies in the game. Some butterflies match the color of a flower, and these fly to the garden with the biggest connected flower bed of this color. Other butterflies match two flower colors, and these are attracted to the biggest combined flower bed of these two colors. All butterflies prefer fresh flowers, so creating a flower patch equal in size to an opponent's garden is enough to lure the butterfly from that other garden to yours.

Having butterflies in your garden brings you points at the end of each round. New butterflies score one point at the end of round one, two points in round two, etc. Butterflies which remain in your garden throughout a round score only half as many points. (Because seeing new species in your garden is more cool.)

Who will prove to be the best gardener?

• Designer Corné van Moorsel notes on this GeekList that he'll have only 180 copies available for sale at Spiel 2013. Says van Moorsel, "If 180 games for Essen is much or little I don't know, so I can't advise if you must be quick or not... It has a very short rulebook; in the past the games with longer rulebooks attracted more interest in the Essen-booth."

Update, Oct. 16, 2013: Van Moorsel says that the flower components are stuck in customs, so he's not sure whether the game will be available at the show. One week to find out!

Description:

In Mayday!Mayday! all players are flight crewmembers aboard flight LK-886, on which the pilot has suddenly died. A heart attack? Poison? Murder? The copilot must now take the lead, but other crewmembers distrust him. The crew believes there are infiltrators amongst them. But who? A skirmish occurs. Will all infiltrators get exposed?

Each crewmember either belongs to the honest crew, or is among the few infiltrators who know one another. At the start you receive 3 identity cards, 2 or 1 honest and 1 or 2 infiltrator. The card you have double, determines your identity. You place these secret cards, mixed, face down in front of you. Then each player looks at 1 card per neighbor. By placing a knowledge tile at a card, you show (or perhaps lie about) what you see. You'll never see more than 1 of another player's 3 cards. So you must combine your own knowledge with the claims of others! But who can you trust?? In order to keep from being unmasked, the infiltrators will naturally act as if they're trying to deduce who might betray the crew.

During skirmishes, some crewmembers will receive first the "Benefit of the Doubt", then they can graduate to a status of "Reliable", and then one of these two reliable crewmembers will become the new Captain. This Captain must start to form a final crew that excludes the infiltrators from access to the cockpit.

With each skirmish, a player sees one identity card held by another player and shares this knowledge (but possibly lies). So each player knows cards self and must value the claims of others. With all players knowing different things, the deductive logic gets deeper and deeper as you theorize about who is who, while also holding possible lies in mind! Will you make it back to the ground safely?

Board Game Publisher: Czech Games Edition
• Hall-booth 1-A104, 1-D138 and 1-D140

• Czech Games Edition is taking reservations for those who want to hold games for Spiel 2013, paying for the games only when picking them up. Additional details from CGE: "For every €55 you spend with us (incl. preorders), you get €5 discount. We will have some new bonus items which will be available only at our booth when buying the appropriate game. We will also have some older bonuses, too."

• On top of the new promo items for Spiel 2013, CGE says that it will have older promos on hand for its game line. I don't have a list of every promo that will be available, so you'll need to stop by the booth if you're looking for something specific.

• In addition to what's posted below, CGE will have a limited number of Rubik's Futuro Cubes available at Spiel 2013 and that item is also available for preorder. (CGE didn't intend to have only a limited number available, but production has been delayed, and so here we are.) What is a "Rubik's Futuro Cube", you ask? CGE's Petr Murmak demonstrates in this poorly-lit video that I recorded with him at Origins 2013, starting at 6:50 after we talk about the new Galaxy Trucker game boards:

Description:

In Last Will: Getting Sacked, the lawyers have found a hidden clause in your uncle's last will. Spending money faster than all your relatives will not be enough. To inherit your uncle's fortune, you must also lose your job! After all, your uncle's heritage can't go to someone who's employed!

With this expansion added to Last Will, each player begins the game with a job card that provides him with a regular income each turn and details a number of things the player must do in order to get fired. Unlike in real life, it can be difficult to persuade your employer to give you the old heave-ho. When you miss work, he's inclined to be charitable because he liked your uncle and he's sorry for your loss. To make him angry, you need to get caught living it up when you should be working. He won't sack you straight away, but he will at least dock your salary.

Once per round, you are able to reduce your income by completing one of the things listed on the job card, earning you a demotion. Even your kindly old boss has his limits, though; when you earn enough demotions to cancel out every line of income, you can discard your employment card. Congratulations: You have been sacked and are one step closer to winning the game!

You will also have a chance to find yourself a good, demanding wife. A wedding is such a romantic way to spend piles of money in a hurry, right? The expansion has six nuptial cards, so get down on one knee and ask the question!

Also, with this expansion, each game can have a different planning board to bring additional variety to the game. When you set up the game boards, you randomly select the eight plan tiles that will be used in the game.

Other Information: • Price €20

• Separate English and German editions of Last Will: Getting Sacked will be available at Spiel 2013.

• In 2012, CGE gave away a Last Will: Messenger promotion that consisted of two cards. For Spiel 2013, CGE says, "We'll give away this little expansion with five hats in each color."

Description:

In a world in which computers have never been invented and coal is the most precious resource, a group of brave pilots board their armored steambots, take their place in the pilot seats of these 30-feet-tall, steam-powered fighting machines, and drive them into fierce arena battles.

This is C.O.A.L.: Combat-Oriented Armored League, a two- to four-player card game with a steampunk setting. C.O.A.L. uses an original game mechanism that combines resource management, bluffing, and memory to simulate the heat of a real battle. The game includes four steambot models – each with its own features, attacks, and defensive maneuvers – and eight different pilots, which have special piloting abilities of their own.

C.O.A.L.: Combat-Oriented Armored League includes customized rules for two-player games, for battles with three or four players, and for two-vs-two partnership games. Deck-building rules are included for advanced players who want to combine parts to build different steambot models. Duels are quick, typically ending in about ten minutes.

Description:

In Relic Runners, each player takes on the role of a character keen to exploit and acquire relics that have been unearthed in a long lost part of the jungle. Each would-be archaeologist has a colorful past — retired university professor, former army captain, etc. — and wants to be the first to get their hands on the precious loot to earn the most victory points.

Players must navigate a series of paths in order to visit temples. The archaeologists are restricted in their movement by their access to rations, but thankfully they can place markers on paths to allow them to travel for free in future turns. The players also have a toolkit that can be upgraded in three particular ways to break the rules in some way or offer them an advantage as they move around.

Each time a player visits a temple, he takes a token. Initially the temples offer up victory points or some form of in-game bonus. When the final token is taken, a relic is placed there to be collected. The players earn large victory points for collecting relics of different types (set collection) and players can also earn bonus points for creating long routes and traveling along these to collect relics.

Description:

Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 4 - Nederland contains a new game board with new rules for use with Ticket to Ride or Ticket to Ride: Europe with players now creating train lines in the Netherlands.

The basics of TtR gameplay remain the same as always — players collect train cards in order to claim routes between pairs of cities with the overall goal of completing tickets they hold in hand — but Ticket to Ride: Nederland twists this gameplay in two ways. First, nearly every route on the game board is a double-route, with two tracks connecting cities. Both of these routes are in play no matter how many players are in the game.

Second, every route — whether double or single — has a bridge toll that a player must pay when building on that route. On a single route or the first track of a double route, the player pays this toll — which costs 1-4 coins — to the bank; on the second track of a double route, the player pays this toll to the player who built the first track. Players start the game with 30 coins, and if you can't pay a toll, you must take a loan card to cover the fare, with each loan costing you 5 points at the end of the game.

In addition to helping you avoid loans, coins matter because at game's end, players receive a bonus based on how many coins they hold relative to everyone else. In a five-player game, for example, the player with the most coins scores a 55 point bonus; the 2nd place player scores 35 points, and the other players 20, 10 and 0 points. If you've taken a loan, however, you're ineligible for this bonus scoring, so players have an incentive to build early and often.

These coin bonuses are balanced by the multitude of destination tickets with large point values: six of them are worth 29+ points while another seventeen are worth 17-26 points.

Description:

Patchistory is a strategy board game with cards that symbolize historical heroes and wonders, with the whole game being divided into three eras. During the game, you acquire these cards through auctions and expand your territory by placing cards so that they overlap one another in a 5×5 space in the first era, a 6×6 space in the second era, and a 7×7 space in the third era. When your land—that is, the layout of your cards—is well built, the card functions are activated. You can earn victory points with diplomatic actions, domestic politics, war movement, the actions of production, etc., and at the end of the game, the person with the highest score after the third era wins.

Because you can make combos with lots of features on historical cards and you can score in various ways, Patchistory will give you another new exciting play every time it hits the table.

Other Information: • On Sept. 25, 2013 on its Facebook page, a Deinko representative noted that "We published 50 copies of [the English-language] limited edition and will hand-carry them to the Essen fair. The game will be provided on a first-come first-serve basis." The representative later added the following note, which I've lightly edited: "We are sorry. We produced only a few because we want to know how people respond to our game. We produced only 50 copies as a limited edition. If we could get the information of the demand, we will soon take it to the production. Thank you." So the game will undoubtedly be the Trains of Spiel 2013, selling out early Thursday morning within minutes, but if all goes well, more copies will come in the future.
