We started the day with a 4 player game of Among the Stars, a 7 Wonders but set in space game. Tim taught Misha, Eric and Kylie. It was the first time for all of us except Tim. The game play seemed more straight forward than 7 Wonders, mainly because there are only 2 types of currency you pay for cards with, instead of all the commodities in 7W. Also, adding up VPs was also simpler. There is a spatial element to the game (think Alhambra). A close 45 min game with Kylie edging ahead at the end due to lots of cards with end game bonuses. We all liked it.

Next up was a 4 player game of Trajan with Tim, Josh, Eric and myself. This is my current favorite game, as its deep enough that you can try lots of different strategies each time. Tim and I had played before, but Eric and Josh quickly worked out how to play, and utilized the bonus actions to good effect. I still feel that you do best in this game going for points in an area of the board less contested by others. Eric ran away with it at the end, mainly due to dominating the construction area. We have the rules pretty well down now, but afterwards I realized we didn't quite get shipping right (you can't take 2 cards off the discard pile. Also when you play cards in front of you for end game scoring, you replenish your hand with new cards). Great game as always.

Tim taught this new game to Eric, Josh and myself. It's SimCity, the board game. Players buy hexagonal tiles to add to their starting tiles and create a city. Lots and lots of different tiles, split into a few common types (residential, commercial, industrial, civic and recreational). Each tiles can effect adjacent tiles, or all your tiles or even all tiles in the game, so you have to pay attention to what everyone else is doing. Some clever mechanisms in the game with income and reputation rising and falling with each additional tile, which has an effect on your money supply and population (the VPs of the game). Eric grasped the game quickly and built an impressive city. Tim maxed out income but had a low reputation city, full of casinos, freeways and heavy industry. He went for the various end game objectives but left his run too late and Eric won. We all enjoyed it and I'm definitely going to buy it.

We finished up with a 3 player game of Smash Up, with Tim, Karl and I. This is a very light game where you select 2 factions, shuffle their cards together and then compete for various bases. Karl had the Trickster Dinosaurs (with laser beams on their heads), Tim had the Robot Zombies while I tried the Ninja aliens. The never ending stream of robots, coming back from the dead proved a winning combination for Tim in this 20 min game. A good end to the day.

(mostly) and I taught this to 5 other people. Just the base game.

Everyone seemed to enjoy it, and the main complaint I think was that we had only set it for the bare minimum of chapters, so when it was ended people were surprised it was over and wanted to keep going, even the Winter side who'd just won.

General agreement was that the modules, all of them, would be added next time.

A couple of people said that they generally find it difficult to create bits of story in story telling games but that this game 'really draws you in and makes it easy'.

We played in about an hour, which is not bad going for a 7 player game that we'd only played once before.

The Doom of Snow White's Flying Cucumber emerging from the NightMare Factory and spreading glaciers over Winter Town will long be remembered.

Got taught this by Priya and others.

I found that getting just one pirate far, far ahead is not a winning strategy.

The boat left without most of my blokes.

I would cheerfully play it again.

A full 6 player game using the western side of the board.

No-one had played, so once we struggled through the rules, the game started.
I must say, once rules were over, this was a easy game to grasp.

A nice little territory wargame with some interesting VP mechanics. I must say, having no zone of control made fighting VERY interesting.

Myself and Tegan started with a two player game of this nice tile laying, rondel based euro. When I bought the game I was afraid that the two player version mightn't work all that well, on account of it using a die as a dummy player, but as it turns out it works really well. This was our fifth game in about two weeks and I took the win this time, with my highest score yet.

Next we played this quick card game. Grug taught this to me at the last Thornlie meet and I've since bought my own copy as an alternative to Lost Cities, which I play a lot with my wife.

I ended up bringing the game to an early close as I thought I was in the lead.

I wasn't.

Next myself and Tegan taught Opalina this euro from the same designers as Village.

It's a quick (under an hour) hand management game with an element of worker placement that reminds me a lot of World Without End, although I prefer this.

I ended up winning with a few last minute helper placements, with Opelina a close second.

Next Opalina taught us this dice allocation/push your luck/area control game. It had been a while since Opalina had played and some retreading of the rule book was needed, which unfortunately got us stuck on the proper use of the cards, as the book contradicts itself. I think we ended up playing incorrectly, and Opalina said that it played better using a different interpretation of the rules, so I need to try this again.

As it was I found it a bit too luck based for my liking. An example is that I ended up winning, just because Opalina hadn't donated enough money to Queen Elizabeth!

Ah Village... The most played game in my collection. Had a 4 player game which went for about two hours, though almost half that time was taken up by explaining the game to new players. I find that the lengthy explanation is one of the drawbacks of this game, but entirely necessary.
Good fun! I think I won in the end but it was quite close.

Finally got to play this after almost 3 years of sitting on my shelf. But... we didn't get to finish it because James had to leave halfway through.
The game has a misleading name because the Witch of Salem is actually a man (Warlock of Salem?). The play is a cooperative race against time; something like a cross between Arkham Horror and Pandemic, with a Lovecraft mythos theme.
It's notorious for being very difficult to win, but in our 4 player game we were doing quite well until James had to leave. We had closed all the hidden portals and only had to reveal 2 more 'Great Old Ones' before we could ban the final Elder God and seal the final portal at the Miskatonic University.
I like the game, but I don't think it was quite everyone else's cup of tea. Wouldn't mind playing it again some time, in any case.

Stew and Steve and I had a crack at a three-handed game. The generals wandered the board freely, "liberating" many cities. Steve's right-hook into Spain left me (Spain) struggling, but opened up Prussia (Steve) to invasion from Austria (Stew). Stew conquered Russia, then obliged Steve, though by capturing his general instead of an out and out invasion. This forced all the Prussians home. Steve repeated his tactic (I am a slow learner), and Stew pressed for the 10 city conquests that would give him victory. Failed by one pip to achieve this, and then my attempt to knock him out of the game failed by one pip. High excitement! But Stew then achieved his 10 conquests anyway.

We played with an unintended (I hope) variation of the rules - we allowed the general to conquer a city just by landing on it; the rules say he must occupy the city at the end of the player's turn. Our variation let the general conquer two cities in a turn. This lead to possibly a more dynamic and fluid version of the game. Perhaps this made it easier to finish the game in under two hours, which was a plus.

An enjoyable retro-game.

Bruce joined Steve and Stew and I for a game of Sigma File (I have the original Condor version). This game is in my personal top ten. I am never quite certain whether the best strategy is to load up one agent, or spread my money over many agents. Bruce had no such reservations. After Steve and Stew had used Martha Ming for two(!) assassinations, Bruce poured funds into her pocket, and as a result, successfully carried the briefcase home, having allocated $300 more to Martha than Steve had.

As I browse my collection of ancient (>30 years old) games, I note a major difference between them and modern games. The "ancient" games have a lot fewer bits and pieces. For example, Sigma File only has a board, eight playing pieces (of rather ugly appearance, but delightfully double-faced), a briefcase, and sheets for recording moneys allocated to the spies. But a lack of complexity in rules does not necessarily mean a lack of complexity in the playing!

Finished the day with a five player game of Santiago (mostly new players).

I was the overseer for the last round and the bribes I received was just enough to get me across the line to victory.

The victory goes where the bribes flow.

Not sure why, but the BGG entry has the German box cover as its main picture.
