So. I have a collection of 80 or so trick taking games that are not played with a standard deck, although some of them could be retrofitted to do so. These are not what I'm looking for in this geek list.

I am interested in finding out about games you love that you play with a standard deck. Please make your additions and comments.

Thanks

Joel

By far my favorite game played with a standard deck. I learned it at a summer study program for honor students where I must have played 200 games of bridge.

The regional game of choice is this one, which I still enjoy a lot. Of course with all the other options out there I don't play it as often, but if I'm going to suggest a game with standard deck it will be this one (assuming we have 4 players.)

I love trick-taking games, but I didn't care for the options available for just two players. So I came up with my own game. I guess I succeeded, as it's my favorite 2-player trick taker. If you've also been unimpressed with what's available for 2 players in the public domain, check it out; the rules are posted to the Files section of the entry and they're not that involved. One day, I may even get off my lazy butt and upload some pictures of the game!

This is a 3-players game that makes use of the 52 card deck with 2 jokers ( black & white joker and colour joker). It involves 2 peasants playing against the landlord.

Players will take turn to bid for the landlord. Being a landlord has the advantage of starting the play and gaining 3 extra cards that may be useful to fill up the gaps of cards on hand.

The player who successfully discard all the cards will be the winner. If either of the peasants wins, both will be considered to be winner. The landlord will lose points based on the bid to both of them. If the landlord wins the game, he/she will gain points based on the bid from both the peasants.

The bid may be increased during the game with the use of bombs and rocket. If any of you is interested in the rules of the game, you may refer to Dou Di Zhu rule file submitted.

There are several variants of Belote, all quite good. My favourite is Belote de Comptoir, whose rules I can't find in English.

It's Liar's Dice with cards. It's for 2-6 players, and you play for a loser (who gets to buy the next round of drinks).

These are the rules I learned from a nanny while I was vacationing in Aix-en-Provence. The dealer deals all players a hand of 1, 2, or 3 cards (dealer's choice). Starting with forehand, each player bids how many points he or she can win in tricks provided that (a) he or she gets the first lead and (b) the first card he or she leads is trump. Bidding goes around the table; if you pass, you cannot re-enter the auction.

If you manage to capture at least as many points you bid in tricks, you earn one victory point. If you fail, all others earn a victory point. Once you have earned six points, you're out of the game. Last player left is the loser.

The auction is the best part; lots of opportunity to bluff.

Well, it is listed as trick-taking so that must be it. Although the image shows a Spanish deck, the Brazilian way of playing is with the French deck. Same name, different games.

AFAIK, it is one the most played games in brazil, usually played at squares in cities in the countryside. It is a bluffing game.

It's a partnership a,e.

My state's way of playing:

The games a standard deck, without the jokers.

* Shuffle the deck
* Player in the left cuts the deck (up to three times)
* Distribute three cards to each player, starting with the player on your right
* one round is three tricks. starting with the player in the right, each player plays a card, highest wins the trick. The player who wins this trick starts the following. In case of a tie in the first trick, the second trick wins the round. In case of a tie in the second or third trick, the players who won the first trick wins the round.
* at any moment in the round a player can propose can double the bid calling "truco", the other duo can run and lose the round automatically, they can accept and try to win the normal way, or they can up the bet with a "six" And so forth. A round is worth 2 points, a truco is 4, a six is 8, a "ten" is 10 and a "game" is 12 points.
* game ends when a partnership reaches 12 points.

The hierarchy of cards is:

4 of clubs
7 of hearts
Ace of Spades
7 of diamonds
3
2
1
K
J
Q
7
6
5
4

Edit: explaining the game.

Feel free to delete this since this uses a Italian Deck (ie the 8,9,10 are not used) but its a great 5 player variable hidden partnership game.

I strongly suggest that people try this game. Its not a heavy trick taking game, but it is a lot of fun.

They sell a special deck for this, but it is easily playable with a standard deck using a joker and that's how I've always played it.

A bit more complex than spades, but less complex than bridge. A group of friends and I played the heck out of this game years ago.

Another game from David Parlett (from Ninety-Nine 'fame'). Very interesting bidding concept with variable partnerships (yes, you should play this game with four people, not two).

From his website:

Quote:
Cross Purposes is a trick-taking game played with a 52-card pack basically ranking AKQJ1098765432 in each suit. In each deal, one player or partnership chooses a trump suit and the other chooses a 'top rank', thus exercising a variable and contrary dimension of trick-taking power. Whatever rank is chosen as 'tops', the others follow it in descending sequence, turning the corner from Ace to King as necessary. For example, if Eights are tops, then in each suit the ranking order of cards from high to low is 8765432AKQJ109.

Also called 'Bleeding Hearts'. David Parlett is my hero when it comes to card games.

From his website:

Quote:
When I first invented Bugami I expected it to work best with four to six players. However, three of us have been playing it intensively over the past year and have discovered it to be at its sharpest and most demanding with this restricted number. What's more, we've spiced it up with the introduction of a couple of additional bids that really make demands on your skill and judgment. As before, the point of this Hearts-type game is that the penalty suit isn't fixed in advance. Instead, you each declare before play which suit you will try to avoid taking any of. This is your 'bug suit'. The fun lies in trying to offload the appropriate bug suits on one another's tricks.
