Designers, welcome to a new challenge!

In following suit with kurthl33t and chansen2794, and running a new contest, the "In-A-Tin" / "Express" Print-and-Play Design Contest! The goal of this contest is to create games that will fit into a volume of a Deciliter OR to create an Express game. Someone once said that you can see farther when you stand on the shoulders of giants, well this is born from kurthl33t and chansen2794's dedication to Print-and-Play and I am proud to say that I am standing on their shoulders.

"In-A-Tin" / "Express" Print-and-Play Design Contest - Discussion Thread

Dates and Deadlines:
Official Start Date: 1 June 2013
Submission Deadline: 3 August 2013 (Saturday), midnight (according to your own timezone, or according to the BGG timezone, whichever comes second)
Voting Deadline: 31 August 2013

Submission Guidelines:

To submit your game to the contest: (Thank you kurthl33t for most of the content here, though there are some modifications.)

1) Create a Work-in-Progress or WIP thread in the Board Game Design forum. (Note: I realize that not everyone will read the rules closely and that some of you will post your WIP in the Design Contest forum. This will not disqualify your submission. However, more people frequent the Design forum versus the Contest forum; you will receive more traffic and feedback if you post in the Design forum.)

2) Include both in the title and the first post of the WIP thread, the state of your design: a) Brainstorming, b) Prototype Generation, c) Playtesting, or d) Completed or Contest Ready (or some reasonable derivative of this list, where I'm not guessing as to the status.)

3) Illustrate which Rule - Deciliter / Express you are complying with in the title of your WIP thread and the first post of it. Again you can comply with both.

4) Include a link to this contest thread in the first post of WIP thread.

5) Create a new Item in this Contest Geeklist, following the example shown in the List. (The Geeklist entry should have a link to your WIP thread.)

6) You may post a link to your WIP thread in this thread.

7) Please keep discussions of specific games in their respective threads, and discussions of the contest or other general topics in this thread.

8) As the game is developed, put the file link(s) to the game in both the first post of your WIP, and in your Contest Geeklist entry.

9) When your game is Completed or Contest Ready post to the Contest Submission Geeklist -- 2013 "In-A-Tin" / "Express" Print-and-Play Design Contest - Final Submission List. I will create this Geeklist about a week before the Submission Deadline. If your entry doesn't make it into that Geeklist, then it won't be considered submitted. There will be an example of how to post the submission in that Geeklist when it's created (but it won't be too different from the WIP Geeklist.)

Note: Any GG tipped to this Geeklist will be kept by me. If you wish to donate to the contest, please do so in the "In-A-Tin" / "Express" Print-and-Play Design Contest - Discussion Thread.

The Results are in!

The Cottonwood Contest: Cousins

The Cottonwood Contest: Cousins is a stand-alone solo game. It is currently in the playtesting phase. It is one deck of 54 cards, and is an "In-A-Tin" entry.

Overview of the game:

Your grandparents were so impressed with the outcome of your parents' contest that they decided to have one of their own. You and your cousin are competing for a large parcel of your grandparents' land in the small but growing town of Cottonwood.

You have three years to show that you can make your farm more profitable. You may plant grain and vegetables, raise animals, and gather apples and mushrooms from the countryside. You may sell goods at each of the three Markets, and enter the income in your ledger.

Your cousin does not want the work of going to the annual market, and made a deal with a local store to receive the average price for each good sold. To determine your cousin's score, you will multiply goods sold by their average price.

The cousin who has the most money in their ledger after the third year wins the contest.

Number of Players: 1

Playing time: 30 mins

Goal of the game: To have the most money in your ledger at the end of the third Market phase.

Overview of the Game:

This is a straight up racing game with a dice mechanic. It is related to Formula D, Bolide, and Rush 'n' Crush. (As described here there is no combat component, but that might change.)

Playing Time: 10 min / player

Goal of the Game:
To be the first across the finish line.

List of Components:
Map
For each player:

Bionic In A Tin: Tokens and Boards

Overview of the Game
Bionic is a paragraph driven adventure game. Bionic In A Tin is just this but in a very compact form. The game features a handful of chits, a character board, some wood cubes and a rule book which is then modified by an Adventure Module. Each Module is one short adventure that may include a few small cards and several paragraph booklets.

Goal of the Game
This is adventure dependent. In the first adventure I am making, Ground Zero, your goal is to survive. You are the former CEO of a corporation who has been framed for performing unethical procedures on unwilling human subjects.

LightSpeed - In-a-Tin

This is a game that is inspired by Amazons, Hey, That's My Fish!, Carcassonne, and TRON.

Links to PnP / Rule Files to come soon

Overview of the Game:
The game has two phases: tile laying and tile capture. In the first phase, you are given a hand of tiles, which become the board over time. You play one tile per turn until all the tiles are played. You also have three tiles that can be placed at any time during the first phase that determine where your pieces will start. Laying the higher-point tiles is strategically important because they have fewer entry points and you can block or bait your opponents with them.

In the second phase, you move around your pieces and remove tiles. You can move the pieces along any amount of white line, as long as it does not disconnect. Then you must remove a tile, but it must be in a straight line from your current tile and the white line cannot break. This makes it tricky because you want to block your opponents, but you may end up required to block yourself in the process.

Number of Players: 2
Playing Time: 15 min

Goal of the Game:
To take over your opponents' player boards.

List of Components:
46 2-inch-square cards (tiles)
6 playing pieces

Roma Celer
an express game of political strategy

Current state: game published.

Number of players: 2-4.
Age: 12 or older.
Playtime: 60 minutes

Files:
Available from the game's page.

Links:
Development thread.

Components:
To be printed: 54 cards, plus 30 half-sized cards.
To be supplied by the players: 50-68 euro-cubes or similar objects; 13 six-sided dice (but 4-5 may suffice if you use more euro-cubes, see rules). Components include optional counters that can be used instead of the cubes and to reduce the number of physical dice required.

Overview:

Roma Celer is a print-and-play express game of political strategy based on The Republic of Rome. The players must cooperate to keep the Roman Republic alive while struggling for dominance within the Roman Senate.

In Roma Celer, the players share a pool of dice which are used to resolve actions; each player gets to allocate some of the dice, but may be forced to divide them between actions beneficial to the player's faction and actions necessary for the survival of the Republic. The players also distribute among themselves the five high offices of the Republic, and use the corresponding powers to their advantage as well as to hinder the other factions.

In the end, the faction that gains the allegiance of the majority of the Roman legions or senators wins the game, but only if the Republic is not bankrupt and the Roman people is content.

Roma Celer: some of the cards.

LEGIONNAIRES: SPOAR WARS!

Brainstorming Phase

A mostly dice driven express version of the man-vs-aliens mini game, involving fast, furious and ulcer generating play; rolling tons of dice; tactical decisions and hordes of aliens being mowed down by slugthrowers and flamethrowers. Players control squads of Legionnaires represented by cads and dice, rolling the dice to form tactical "hands" with various effects in a timed dice-rolling round. Players move around a card-generated map while Radar Blips slowly creep toward them.

Number of Players:
Co-op 1-4 potentially.
Time: 30-45 minutes.
Goal: Move through a space vessel, slaughter all aliens, survive, reach the end rooms.

List of Components (estimate right how):
12 Tactical dice
20 "room, radar, terrain and connection" cards
Various tokens (less than 10 hopefully)
2-3 Player mats (one for tactical Dice hands; one for saving Dice symbols; one for gameplay and tables)

Sniper 2020 (In-A-Tin / Express)

Playtesting Phase

https://docs.google.com/a/q.com/file/d/0B-f5fVziDJk4UDRfcU5F...

The theme is military, about six years into the future. You are a sniper, trying to take down many terrorist leaders and weapons dealers. The mechanics are a bit jumbled up, because you must move, determine weather, and shoot your gun, which all use different mechanics. But the main ones are:

A. Card Pulling
B. Dice Rolling

I chose to make this game because I wanted a military game, but couldn't make one where you play as a marine or something. So I thought I'd try a sniper game and hey! It worked! I know it still needs some more changes before it is ready (like a bit longer game play), but it is ready to be playtested.

Number of players: 1
Playing Time: About 5 minutes per game

Goal: To kill the target.

List of Components:
76 cards
--5 Sniper Rifle Cards
--7 Attachment Cards
--7 Distance cards
--4 Weather Pattern Cards
--12 Weather Cards
--21 Wind Speed Cards
--7 target Cards
--14 Target Action Cards
6 six-sided dice

Terra Mystica Express In-A-Tin
(I'll have to rename it, I suppose.)

Playtesting Phase

Links to PnP / Rule Files
TBD (WIP)

Overview of the Game:
Terra Mystica has a great terraforming mechanic which I like a lot. That, combined with with the ability to travel over the river, really makes this shine as a better sort of area control game. So I decided to make an express-in-a-tin game that isn't hard to craft, and quick to play.

Number of Players: 2-4
Playing Time: 15-20 min

Goal of the Game:
Gain the most points by placing and expanding your settlements.

List of Components:
1 playing board (the map)
15 cubes for each player (60 for the full 4-player game)
10 terraformed terrain hexes (40 for 4 players)
